Praise God! We belong to God's church, which points us to heaven while also embracing our human condition. In today's Gospel, Jesus sends his disciples out to baptize all
people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Baptism washes us clean spiritually, but also refreshes us physically. Think of the dirtiest you have ever been--drenched in sweat, covered in dirt, or long unbathed for some reason. Then recall how invigorating it felt to wash in running water. This physical experience of refreshing water reminds us of God's power to renew us, body and soul. In baptism we become part of God's family, as Saint Paul says, through "a Spirit of adoption." As beloved children of God, we cry out "Abba!" and confess from the depths of our hearts that, as Deuteronomy says, the LORD is God, and there is no other.
