Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles.

The power of the Resurrection is made evident in the "signs and wonders" done by the apostles. Even Peter'sshadow was effective in bringing healing. Are such signs still apparent today? Absolutely, at least in places and in per-sons who have dedicated themselves as instruments of God's goodness. Are we available to such power? That is a testof where we are at in our faith walk. We cannot control the outcome. God is free. But if we are submitted to God's will wecan count on Him to always do it through us. Peter and the other apostles witnessed Jesus' Resurrection. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and the power to forgive sins. Thisis one of God's greatest signs, that he can delegate this power to mere men, even sinful men. "Where sin abounds, grace abounds all themore." This is the main mission of the Church, to reconcile humanity to God the Father through Christ. On this Mercy Sunday, let us realizethis power to forgive, the power of mercy.

Mercy Sunday

Today we celebrate the mercy of God and the delegation of that mercy to the apostles. This,we believe, is the source of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This teaching was ratified in anextraordinary way through the apparitions and locutions given to St. Faustina of Poland. Shewas a sister who began to receive extraordinary visions and words at an early age. Jesus callsher "his secretary" in one instance. He asked her to have an image painted of His merciful heartand begin a new devotion to mercy through a novena, feast day and chaplet. We celebrate thisat St. Stephens from Good Friday until today, when we will have an hour of mercy at 2:30 onSunday the 28th. Here are a few of His words as recorded by Faustina:

I am King of Mercy… I desire that this image be displayed in public on the first Sundayafter Easter. That Sunday is the Feast of mercy. Through the Word Incarnate, I makeknown the bottomless depth of My mercy. (October 26, 1934, par. 88)

St. John Paul II would declare in the year 2000 that this Sunday would be called Mercy Sundayhenceforth. He himself died on Mercy Sunday in 2005.

Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust inYou. I desire that this image be venerated, first in your venerate this image will not per-ish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hourof death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory. (Feb 22, 1931)

We pray the chaplet every weekday at 3pm here at St. Stephens. It’s a spiritual Mass, offeringJesus to the Father for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus makes great promises to those who prayit, especially for those who are dying:

Oh, what great graces I will grant to souls who say this chaplet; the very depths of My tender mercy are stirred for the sakeof those who say the chaplet. Write down these words, My daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankindrecognize My unfathomable mercy. It is a sign of the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the fount of My mercy; let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them.

Join us at the fount of Mercy on Sunday, April 28th, 2:30pm.

Stewardship Prayer - Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for the many blessings in our lives and pray that during this time of Stew-ardship Commitment Renewal you would inspire the hearts of your faithful to return to you a proper portion of their many gifts. May weall grow in wisdom, gratitude and generosity so that your Church might flourish here in Western Washington. We ask this in the HolyName of Jesus. Amen
