They had no food in the desert, so God sent them manna and quail from the sky. To this rescue, the people responded with complaint. They had been rescued already from many dangers, including their slavery in Egypt, but no matter how many times they were rescued, they refused to trust in God’s providence. In contrast to the utter lack of gratitude in the First Reading, today’s Responsorial Psalm is one of tremendous gratitude. The Psalmist recounts God’s graciousness to our ancestors, with thanks for all His wonderful deeds. Still today, we see God’s fingerprints in the many ways He guides us, through everyday events. Sometimes God intervenes with power, while usually it is subtle, but no less loving. In today’s Second Reading, St Paul encourages us to live out our Christian calling. As Christians we are called to behave in a new way, seeing things in a new light. We are to treat others with respect, seeing the world through God’s eyes. This requires a certain amount of discipline. Giving in to pagan carnal desires only enslaves us to them. True freedom comes when we live in the light of God’s truth. In today’s Gospel we find Jesus calling us to a higher understanding. Jesus is telling His disciples that He Himself is the real manna, the real Bread from heaven, true spiritual nourishment. The people did not want to change their lives in following Him, they just wanted to watch Him work miracles and for this He takes them to task. He doesn’t give up on them, He keeps calling them higher. Jesus reveals Himself as God’s wisdom. Wisdom, in the Old Testament, prepared a meal for those in need of instruction. Whoever ate her bread and drank her wine would have eternal life. Jesus, Wisdom itself, is instructing the people; if they eat of Him, the true manna & nourishment, they will have eternal life.
