STRAND: PIZZERIA LOSESWHOLE LOTOF DOUGH
Scamster targets
Strandbusiness
CASSY VAN EEDEN
TheStrandpolice havewarned local
businesses to be especially careful
with unusually large transactions
conducted telephonically after Ro-
mans Pizza in Strand lost R11 700s
worth of stock on Thursday.
This appears to be part of a scam that
hasalreadystruckseveralRomansPiz-
za franchises and other businesses in
the broader Cape metro region.
Corn De Kock, owner of Romans
Pizza intheStrand,saysoneofhercash-
iers took down a telephonic order for
84 large pizzas and 51 two litre bottles
of cool drink at around 11:00.
The man, calling himself Trevor
Swartz, placed the order under the
guise of Prima Construction (a compa-
ny that could not be located).
De Kock suspects that the man
planned to collect the pizzas and cool
drinks and then either complain about
them and ask for a refund, or sell the
pizzas elsewhere to make a profit.
At around midday, De Kock phoned
the man back to explain that she could
not process the order without proof of
payment. The man promptly emailed
her a proof of an EFT payment, which
she said looked exactly like the real
thing.
He made the payment from an ABSA
bank account and arranged to fetch the
order at 18:00.
At14:00theshopbeganprocessingthe
order and by 15:00 it was almost com-
pleted.
This was when De Kock decided to
contact ABSA as she felt it was impor-
tant to confirm the legitimacy of the
proof of payment document, given that
it was for such a large amount. She was
informed that there was no such ac-
countholder on theABSAdatabase and
that the proof of payment she had re-
ceived was a fraudulent document.
Thereafter, she made several at-
tempts to contact themanandeventual-
ly at 20:00 he answered his phone and
said he would send a driver to collect
the order, which he never did. De Kock
and her staff waited at the shop until
around 21:00.
DeKock realised that thiswas a scam
andemailedall theotherRomansPizza
franchises in theWestern Cape towarn
them.
She then established that three other
Western Cape branches Paarl, Kuil-
sriver and Soneike, had also been con-
tacted by this man.
De Kock then opened a case of fraud
against themanwith the Strand police.
Constable Mbulelo Mafuna has con-
firmed that a docket for a fraud investi-
gation has been opened.
DeKocksaid that this is a serious loss
for her business, particularly during
such a quiet time of the year in Strand.
OnFriday, the business donated over
half of the pizzas to a student group.
Neil Hofmeyr, owner of Romans Piz-
za in Paarl, said he was also scammed
on Thursday of over R4 000 in the same
way by aman using the same cellphone
number as themanwho had phonedDe
Kock, andwhosenamewasalsoTrevor.
A driver came to collect the order of
over R4 000s worth of pizzas from the
shop.
Hofmeyr decided to continue to
phone theman until he got a satisfacto-
ry answer from him.
OnceHofmeyr informed theman that
he had reported him for both fraud and
theft to the police, the mans response
was Do you think that you are the only
guywho is looking forme?Youwillnev-
er catch me, Hofmeyr says.
Jacques Ott, owner of Romans Pizza
in Soneike, says that thanks to De
Kocks warning, he was able to prevent
the scam from happening to him. He
saidthathewasalsocontactedonSatur-
day by a man named Trevor, who or-
dered R8 500 worth of pizzas to be col-
lected at 19:00 that night. Smelling a rat,
he decided to cancel the order.
Build It in Soneikewas defrauded out
ofR35 000worthof constructionmateri-
als when a man, using the same name
and cellphone number, placed a large
order for delivery to a building site.
Themandepositedthemoneyintothe
businesss account and Build It deliv-
ered the material. Shortly after the de-
livery, Build It was contacted by their
bank to inform them that the money
that was deposited was from a stolen
cheque and had therefore been can-
celled. When Build It returned to the
site, the entire site had disappeared,
says salesperson Andre Newman.
The man goes by three different
names: Trevor, Dave andLeigh andhas
what people describe as a Nigerian ac-
cent.DeKock says themanuses differ-
ent banking details on his proof of pay-
ment documents.
When the DistrictMail contacted the
man, he denied all allegations and end-
ed the call.

may assist the investigation in Strand

Kays-inwoners ontevredemet strukture
DALEEN FOUCH
Groot ongelukkigheid en onsekerheid
heers onder inwoners van Kays Kara-
vaanpark wat hul huise in n brand ver-
loor het, omdat sink- en nie houtstruktu-
re aan hulle geskenk is.
DieDistriksPos het verlede week berig dat
die Stad Kaapstad standaard beginnerspak-
kette vir n sinkstrukture aan inwoners ge-
skenk het (Newhomes for Kays residents,
DistriksPos, 16 Januarie), nadat agt hout-
her betaal.
Strumpher het aanDistriksPos ges hy sal
die houtstrukture mettertyd weer oprig. Die
sesoorblywende strukturehet aanprivaatei-
Inwoners is eg-
R2 000 per maand vir huur be-
taal.
nieeerderhoutmateriaalaandie
inwoners geskenk is om weer
houtstrukture op te rig nie.
Dave Venter, plaaslike raads-
lid, s die beginnerspakkette is
die standaard-pakket wat aan
mense geskenk word wat hul
strukture verloor as gevolg van
n natuurramp. Hy noem dat ten
spyte van die feit dat Kays Kara-
vaanpark private grond is, het
die Stad Kaapstad tog besluit om
die beginnerspakkette vir n
sinkstruktuuraandie inwoners teskenkom-
dat meeste van hulle geen ander heenkome
het nie.
Pearcewil egter ookweet hoekomdaar nie
met skenkings wat ontvang is boumateriaal
gekoop word nie. Hy s Helpende Hand, n
teriaal of gereedskap bekostig nie.
MaarErna vanHeerden, n vrywilliger vir
Helpende Handwat betrokke is by Kays Ka-
ravaanpark,sdieoorgrotemeerderheidvan
daar genoeg kontantskenkings is, daar hout
verlede week opgerig as n voorbeeld.

NewYork rowingadventure real now
CASSY VAN EEDEN
The Helderbergs famous adventurer
Riaan Manser and his girlfriend Vasti
Geldenhuys left the small town of Agadir
on the Moroccan coast on 31 December in
a seven metre rowing boat, starting their
10 765 km journey to Manhattan, New
York.
By19January, theyhadreachedLanzarote,
the most eastern Canary Island, where they
slept for 12 hours before continuing on their
voyage, titled Take Me to New York.
We plan to rowdown the islands and hope-
fullymake it to open ocean again by early this
week, Manser told the DistrictMail.
The couple faced an exceptionally rocky
start to their trip, which they estimate will
take them 120 days in total.
First, they spent 10 days at the Agadir air-
port, where they dealt with endless red tape
with customs, boat repairs, a lost container,
a stolen iPad and a broken solar battery.
After delaying their departure by several
days, theyfaceddangerouslystrongnortherly
winds, which required them to be on deck full
timejusttokeepthebowintherightdirection,
rather than rowing for a solid six hours as
they had planned.
Wewereexhausted,Mansersaidafter their
first day, hands blistered and my rear end es-
pecially tender.
At this point theywere only 30 nauticalmiles
from mainland Morocco and had covered far
less sea than planned.
Manser then reported that after some
tough nine hour rowing days to get away
from land, they finally had the Canary Is-
lands in sight.
Shortly after this they faced a raging
storm that saw them locked inside their ca-
bin for 16 hours.
By their fourth week at sea they nearly
lost their boat and their lives after almost
being run over by a 300 m cargo ship and
confronting waves the size of buildings
throwing our little boat around for 24
hours, said Manser.
It was aweekwherewe again learnt that
there is no reward without hardship.
Manser never understood why most peo-
ple avoided the route that they were set to
take fromAfrica to theCanaryIslands.How-
ever, after spending 13 days slogging away
for over 500 km against unfavourable row-
ing conditions and overcoming storms that
locals say they havent seen in years, it be-
came clear to the two of them why so few
sailors attempted the course.
On Thursday last week the two adventur-
ers encounteredyet another perilous storm.
Locked insideour little box cabinwecould
often visually make out waves about to hit us
but normally sound would give it away first.
The thunderous rumble of breaking waves is
deafening, said Manser.
Their boat was smashed, rolled onto its
side and then washed dozens of metres to one
side.
I was worried for our safety right then, as
never before on this journey. The adventure
was real nowandhadus don life jackets, our
GPS rescue beacons and clothing that would
keep us warm in open seas. After the storm,
Manserandhispartnersufferedanotherblow
when they discovered that their most vital
piece of equipment, their parachute or drift
anchor,hadbeenrippedtopiecesinthestorm.
They decided to make their way to the Ca-
nary Islands to CapeVerde to repair damages
to the boat and deal with any other problems.
Once they leave Cape Verde, they leave all
civilisation behind until they hit the coast of
Barbados, 3 877,61kms away.
The couple are completely alone on their
Take Me to New York adventure, with no
support boat and no ablution facilities, only
their supplies.
You can track their progress on Yellow-
brick Tracking http://my.yb.tl/TM2NY,
tweet them on @TM2NY and like their Face-
book page Take Me 2 New York.

al setbacks and de

The new bylaw by the City of Cape

allows for off-consumption licensed

Tragic accident in Strand
DELIAH BRINKHUIS
A young woman from Strand
died when her scooter collided
with a sedan at about 17:30 on
Monday. Nicolette (Nikki) Oe-
lofses body was only removed
from the scene at 21:30.
According to an eyewitness,
Nikkiwas travelling fromBeach
Road, Strand along Van Rie-
beeck Street on her scooter.
The eyewitness says he was
standing inaparkingareaon the
corner of Wesley and Van Rie-
beeck when he heard a loud
crash. The scooter had collided
with a car approaching from
Wesley Street. The impact of the
collision caused Nikkis body to
land in the parking area. Wit-
nessessayshediedafewminutes
later. The driver of the car was
unharmed.
On Tuesday Elma Lambrech
who runs a business in the area
said the scene had not been
cleared properly and left rem-
nants of the accident.
Louise Kleynhans, owner of
Scooters Pizza in Beach Road,
Strand says she was shocked
about the news of Nikkis death.
She says Nikki (30) was a mana-
ger at the business for three
years and that it was her day off
on Monday. When we last said
goodbye to her, we had no idea
that we would not see her alive
again, Kleynhans says. She de-
scribes Nikki as a friendly and
helpful person.
She always smiled and had a
laugh that came from her stom-
ach, she says.
Tracy Smith, a resident of Van
Riebeeck Street and customer at
Scooters Pizza also remembers
Nikkis friendly personality.
Evenwhen she was not at work
and passed you on the street, she
would always wave with a big
smile on her face, she says.
According Wilfred Solomons-
Johannes of the Citys Disaster
Risk Management, medical
emergencies are the responsibil-
ity of the Department of Health.
He said that the fire department
will also be called to clean up a
scene at times.
DistrictMail askedEmergency
Medical Services why the body
was only removed four hours af-
ter the accident. At the time of
going to press, no response had
beenreceived.Police are investi-
gating a case of negligent and

Get chronicmedsatalternative sites
CASSY VAN EEDEN
The Western Cape Minister of Health,
Theuns Botha, visited the Zandvliet
Care Facility inMacassaronThursday
to oversee the delivery of chronic me-
dication parcels to the elderly resi-
dents.
The visit forms a part of the Western
Cape Governments strategy to deliver
chronicmedicationparcelstositesthatare
alternatives to clinics andhealth facilities.
The programme aims to reduce the
number of patients who visit state health
facilities each month.
SusanJordaan(64)inthepasthadtowait
at clinics from as early as 05:00 to as late
as 18:00 to collect her chronic medication
for the month. She is one of the 220 000 pa-
tients who receive their chronic medica-
tion at alternative sites.
And the service is set to expand to its
full capacity of 350 000 packages, Botha
said.
The service has also reduced the pres-
sure felt byAnti-Retroviral (ARV) sites, as
it includes the dispensing of ARVs.
The Western Cape Health Department
has already established 1 400 alternative
sites towhichpre-packedparcelsaredeliv-
ered.
The Department estimates that 30% of
thepatients in theMetroareareceive their
medication through the alternative site
delivery service, whichmeans 47 000 few-
er patients will attend the clinics each
month. The service is only available to
chronic patients who are in a stable condi-
tion and who return to their clinics for
renewal of their prescriptions as pre-
scribed by their local clinic.
Whilstat theZandvlietCareFacility, the
Minister highlighted that although the
service has been highly effective thus far,
the Department still battles to encourage
patients to take their medication.
Tania Mathys, Manager of the Chronic
Dispensing Unit, said that research is cur-
rently being conducted to investigate the
various reasons why patients, who are be-
ing supplied with their medication and
having it dispensed into weekly contain-
ers, still do not take their medication.
Theuns Botha, Minister of Health for the Western Cape
Government, hands over a parcel of prepacked chronic
medication to Susan Jordaan (64).

Councillor Stuart Pringle, chairper-
son of Subcouncil 8, is seeking a mee-
tingwith theWesternCapeEducation
Department about the shortage of
schools in the Helderberg.
This followsanarticle in lastweeks
DistrictMail detailing perceptions
among principals that more schools
are needed in the area (Too many
learners, too few schools).
According toPringle, ameetingwas
held with the WCED two years ago to
discuss this very issue. He says that it
was a very constructive meeting
whereproposalswereput forwardand
discussed for theexpansionofexisting
schools in the area and the need for
more to be built.
Pringlesays thatsince thatmeeting,
the WCED has expanded several
schools and land has been identified
for future schools.
He adds that schools are needed in
particular in Gordons Bay, Bizweni,
Sir Lowrys Pass, Heldervue and Ma-
cassar.
Pringle says theWCEDhas been in-
formed about the massive growth in
the population of the area, but that the
department is currently considering
budget and land availability.
Pringle expects the meeting to take
place in February, after which he will
know how many students in the Hel-
derberg are currently not enrolled in
a school. He adds, though, that the
WCED is confident that all students
will be accommodated.
Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for
theWCED,says that theWCEDiswor-
kinghardtoplacelearnersandisconfi-
dent that all learners will be placed in
the next week or so.
She says that two new mobile
schools are currently being built in
Nomzamo to accommodate more
learners. One is a primary school and
the other a secondary school.
According toCasey, the schoolswill
be completed inMarchandpupilswill
be able to move in in April. The lear-
ners at these two new schools are cur-
rently being housed in mobiles at

Newlife forold church
The historic 1819 Dutch Reformed
Church in Somerset West, which has
over recent years fallen into decay and
harboured vagrants, has been given
new life.
The newly renovated and refurbished
church building now serves as the house
ofworship for localNewApostolic Church
members, who have been congregating in
thehall of a play school for almost 15 years.
This follows after the New Apostolic
Church leadership entered into a long-
term lease agreement with the owners of
the church.
When the building ran the risk of being
used for purposes other than worshipping
the Lord, the New Apostolic Church lead-
ership enquired about purchasing the
building. However, this was not possible
due to the church building being classified
as a national monument.
On Sunday 19 January the president of
theNewApostolicChurchCapeTown,Dis-
trictApostleNoelBarnes, accompaniedby
all his apostles and bishops, dedicated the
church to a newly formed congregation.
Among the distinguished guests present
were professor Harold Herman and the
trustees of the Maatskappy vir die Bewa-
ring van die Historiese NG Kerk Somerset-
Wes, Louis Steyn, Jean Pierre du Plessis
and Jimmy Hanekom.
Thededicationservicewasaudio-visual-

of around 115 000 members could share in
the joy of this event during which District
Evangelist Rowen Felton from Somerset
West was appointed as the congregational
leader.
According to Felton, the church will be
open to the public on Saturdays, merely so
people can view the church and wander
through the cemetery on the premises.
Thechurchwillnotonlyserveasaplace

It is a community asset, not necessarily a
New Apostolic Church asset, explained
Felton.

Printedblack-and-white copiesat PostNet far tooexpensive
On Friday 10 January I went into

on my flash drive.
Well, to put it mildly, I was in for
a rude awakening when the assist-

R3,50 for one printed black-and-
whiteA4copy, I asked?Howis this?
It is R2 for the labour and R1,50 for
thecopyitself,oneof theseniorstaff
members told me.
I was shocked. The so-called la-
bour involved for the young lady
who helped me to do the following:
inserting a flash stick into the PCs
USB port, opening the files, being
showed the exact file for printing,
clicking once on thePCmousewith
her finger, turning around to re-
movetheprintedcopyfromthepho-
to copy machine and handing it to
me. All in all this took her about 15
seconds. Now I am just wondering
that if 15 secondsof clickingonaPC
mouse costs R2, what is this estab-
lishment going to charge someone
who needs, say, 10 minutes of their
PC labour? Is this going to cost the
saidclientR2 x 4 x 10=R80orwhat?
Letuspauseforamomentatthecost
of R1,50 for one black and white A4
paper copy. At government institu-
tions, such as our public libraries,
the cost foroneA4copy is currently
60c. This makes the copies at this
PostNet franchise 2 times more
expensive than at said government
institutions!
Im so sorry, but for me all of the
above adds up to only one thing, i.e.
a complete rip-off! I paid them the
R3,50 they charged me for this one
copy, because I hatemaking scenes
in public, but I will be damned if I
will just keep entirely silent about
being taken for this kind of insult-
ing ride!
Please understand, I have noth-

former, unfortunately, doesnt
atone for these truly exorbitant

ourselves of only offering the best of
service at all times. We have state of
the art computer equipment to ad-

of the digital age and to ensure that
we conform to the requirements of
our customers.
This equipment comes at a premium
and we charge appropriate fees.The

charged for 1 x print or 100 x prints.
It is a once off fee.
The cost thatwasapplied isbasedon

Theneed for speed
If you live in the Land en Zeezicht area
on the northern side of Lourensford
Road, thenyouprobablyonlyhavea two

from Telkom, because you are too far
from the exchange.
I contacted Telkom to find out when
they will be upgrading the network to
this area so that we could have 10 Mbps
ADSLlines.They informedmethat they
have no plans as there is not enough de-
mand for faster ADSL lines in Land en
Zeezicht. However, if you live on the
Radloff Park side of Lourensford Road,
there is a mini exchange installed in
Morgenster Road. This enables you to
get 10 Mbps lines as youare closer to the
exchange. There will soon be competi-
tion to DSTV that will be available on
the internet andyouwill needa 10 Mbps
line to view the live video content. All
Telkom needs to do is put a pipe under
Lourensford road to connect your line
to the mini exchange. So if you want to
have access to alternatives other than
the expensive DSTV, then dont get

Whyregular eye testsare important
It may surprise you to learn that
you could be saved from serious
illness by having your eyes tested
more often.
Regular examination of your eyes
by a qualified optometrist may re-
veal changes in vision, monitor cer-
tain conditions of the eye and check
for general health.
Eyes are sensitive indicators and
showuphealth problems long before
thereareanyobviousphysicalsymp-
toms.
During an examination, an optom-
etrist can detect conditions such as
high blood pressure, hypertension
and excess cholesterol.
Also, a full eye examination is im-
portant in the detection and control
of diabetes. One of the first signs of
this disease is erratic vision and a
change in prescription something
which is quickly noticed by optome-
trists.
Optometrists also check for other
eye conditions, including cataracts,
glaucoma, spots or floaters and col-
our deficiency.

Growth despite low
expectations
Despite inhibited expecta-
tions for trading over the fes-
tive season, the Somerset
Mall showed an unexpected
growth compared to the 2012
season.
Mandy Bellamy, general
manager of the Somerset
Mall, says with rising fuel,
transport and utility costs,
they did not expect a bumper
festive season. She says de-
spite this, SomersetMall trad-
ed moderately well with
some very strong performing
categories.
Last week the DistrictMail
reported that businesses had
mixed results this festive sea-
son, and although some busi-
nesseswerehappynot tohave
done worse than previous
years, others enjoyed their
best season yet (Festive
spending in Helderberg
varied, DistrictMail, 16 Jan-
uary 2014).
Bellamy says Somerset
Mall ispleasedtohaveattract-
ed a total of 1.27 million visi-
tors last December.
This constitutes agrowthof
2.2% compared to December
2012.
She explained that it must
be taken into account that the
majority of storeswere closed
on Sunday 15 December, in
honour of NelsonMandela on
the day of his funeral.
Bellamy says some stores
reported best trading day ev-
er for Saturday 14, Tuesday
17 and Monday 23 December
2013.
The categories that enjoyed
strong growth in comparison
to December 2012 are health
and beauty, sporting and out-

specialised homeware, spe-
