    SNOW WHITE: Somerset

    West resident Ben Visser (82),

    together with his son, Leon

    (51), and grandson, Brandon

    (23), climbed Sneeukop in the

    HottentotsHolland mountains

    last Saturday. Visser said he

has been a regular hiker since

his retirement in 1992 and it

was an honour for the three

generations to reach the top of

Sneeukop in 11 hours and 40

    minutes together. It could not

have been at a better time to

    attempt this epic event, seeing

that I have been blessed with

good health, but at a slower

pace to achieve this at my ripe

    age of 82.

Whatwas supposed to be a relaxing day at the beach

turned into a scene reminiscent ofMr Poppers Pen-

    guinsandHappyFeet forCoenie vanNiekerkandhis

    family.

    Ayoungpenguincamehoppingoutof thewateraround

13:40 onSaturday (10August), exploring the shore ofGor-

    dons Bay Main beach.

VanNiekerk, a SomersetWest resident recalls basking

in the warmwinter sunwith his wife, Kerrinwhile their

four children Nathan (10), Seth (8), Sarah (5) andMicah

    (3) weresplashingaround in thewater.Suddenly,Sarah

    yelled, Penguin!

Upon inspection, Van Niekerk saw the grey African

penguin frolicking in the water. Instead of shying away,

the penguin made its way out of the water, shook itself

and strolled aroundwhile soaking up the attention of ad-

    mirers.

Van Niekerk says the penguin portrayed a real Im

    the man attitude.

Every movement he made was bold and he wasnt

phased by anything or anyone. He walked around like

he owned the beach, said a fascinatedVanNiekerk, who

realised the little penguin was acting very abnormally

    and needed expert help.

Van Niekerk contacted the Southern African Founda-

tion for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB)

    whoadvisedhimtotakethebirdtoarehabilitationcentre

in Somerset West. He placed the penguin in a green Pick

n Pay cooler bag to avoid direct contact and with a lot

of juggling to keep it inside, the family took it to the Bird

    and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

By then, of course, names for the penguin had already

become the main topic of discussion. Or as Sarah very

cleverly put it, Joe, if its a boy; Joey, if its a girl. How-

ever, there was no time to determine its gender, and the

little charmer was dubbed Joe the penguin regardless.

And instead of the expected racket from Joe, questions

such as, Dad, canwe please keep Joe as a pet? and Can

we get ice and put Joe in a bath? were Van Niekerks

    entertainment during the drive.

According to Angela Lewis, manager of the Bird and

Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, the penguin was indeed

very sick - underweight, dehydrated, probably confused

and unable to cope on its own. The centre stabilised Joe

and gave the little patient fluids every two hours.

    OnSunday, thepenguinwas takentoSANCCOBssea-

bird rehabilitationcentre inTableView for further treat-

ment. When he will be released, solely depends on his

    health, said Lewis.

After explaining why the penguin cannot be kept as

a pet, van Niekerk now has to deal with, Dad, wheres

Joe? and Do you think he is on an island somewhere

enjoying the sun?. Questions Van Niekerk expects to

hear for many months to come.

    Mails website (www.districtmail.com).

    MINA

    Dustbindayattacksarenosurprise

Its no surprise to read about the

    Somerset West dustbin day at-

    tacks (DistrictMail, August 8).

    Not only do criminals hide

    among these so-calledhomeless,

but dustbin scavenging is in fact

    a contravention of Sections 17(1)

and (2) of the City bylaws which

explain that once the bin is placed

on the sidewalk, the City of Cape

    Townor its contractedservicepro-

    viders have exclusive authority to

    collect and remove thewaste from

    residential areas/households.

There is also the serious prob-

lem of some residents keeping the

homeless on the streets by giv-

ing them money, food and blan-

    kets, thereby negating the very

good work done by social services

to get them into a programme of

    re-integration into society.

Only a percentage of these peo-

ple are truly homeless and many

of them flood into Somerset West

from other towns. In the words of

one of them, Somersetjie is goud

    (sic).

    Thosewhoarereallyinneedwill

always be assisted at the Night

    Shelter and residents whowant to

    see themre-integrated intosociety

    can purchase coupons which can

be redeemed at the Night Shelter

where they canhave a hot shower,

a plate of food, clothes and a place

to sleep. Coupons can be bought

from the Life Church, next to the

    Lord Charles, the Helderberg

Crime Watch or the Night Shelter

    (021 851 4984).

    Many vagrants decline assist-

    ance from Social Development as

it pays them to stay on the streets,

    breaking a number of bylaws,

knowing they will be kept in their

errant ways by those who do not

care about getting them out of

    their self-destructive habits and

who will defend their breaking of

the laws to boot. Very often these

are the same people who decry the

    high crime rate.

So herewith a big vote of thanks

    Towannabemulti-millionaires

    Thankyou for the

    responses to the

    article in which I

    wrote how

    R10 000 invested

    in 1975 grew to be

    worth R122 mil-

    lion today. Can

    this be correct?

    There must be a

    catch? Well, in a

    way there is, and

    that is time value

    of money.

    Comparing the R10 000 in

    1975toR122Mtodayismislead-

    ing in thatyouare ignoring the

time value of money. In 1975

    R10 000 was a lot of money, a

third of the value of my dads

house, however it seems an in-

    significant amount when com-

pared to R122M today and this

is because we are comparing a

value in 1975 to a value today.

The R10 000 of 1975 is like in-

    vestingR1million today, equal

    toathirdofmydadshouseval-

ue today and thus a fairer way

to illustrate how to become a

    multi-millionaireoverthenext

    38 years.

    For those wannabe multi-

    millionaires dont let this put

    you off investing.

Below is an extract from an

    article posted by Garth on

    Traders Corner Blog explain-

    ing thevalueof investing early

    and compounding returns,

    whichAlbert Einstein once re-

    ferred to as the

    eighth wonder of

    the world. If you

    can consistently

    achieve a 15% com-

    pound annualised

    return, your invest-

    ment will double

    every five years.

    For my newborn

    son,thatmeansthat

    the investment I

    make for him now

    will have the oppor-

    tunity to double 12

    timesbythetimehereaches60.

To put this into perspective, it

    means that a R100 000 invest-

ment now could grow to over

    R1,8Mbythetimeheis21years

old, and to over R400 M by the

time he is 60. Thats assuming

    a lump sum investment with

no additions to the initial in-

vestment. The key is to be able

    to achieve that 15% p.a.com-

pounded return, and to do that

    requires the correct asset allo-

    cation and stock selection.

    Withall duerespect toGarth

the secret is not so much find-

ing the next Allan Gray, but

    simply to start investing early

    andlet thepowerofcompound-

    ing interest do the rest.
