Dit volg n die dood van die
graad 8-leerling, Kieran Schultz

Hermanus. Kieran is een van ver-
skeie Parel Vallei-leerlinge wat in

Head boy Kieran set example of excellence
Kieran Schultz has made his mark
in the Helderberg community and
will be remembered for his impres-
sive talentsandhisgreat enjoyment
of life.
BeaumontPrimary school princi-
pal, Gordon Reddell has said that
the entire school is shocked at the
suddenandtragicdeathof their2012
head boy.
Reddell described Kieran as one
of their finest pupils.
According to Reddell, Kierans
marks often placed him among the
top three in his grade.
The youngster was also an ex-
tremely talented actorwho excelled
in the annual Eisteddfod and was,
like his sister Dhania, part of their
schools art club.
Kieran held the position of head
boy with distinction and showed
tremendous growth in his new role
of leadership and responsibility.
When he spoke to his fellow pre-
fects, he was in control of his
thoughts and ideas, and they rallied
around him, said Reddell.
Kierans love for his family was
also evident in the many tales he
told at school.
He relished the adventures and
activities they shared, whether act-
ing in a theatrical production to-
gether, going on holiday or baking
a cake.
We believed that he would carry
on to make a big name for himself
in the performing arts one day! One
can hope that many pupils and
adults alike will imitate Kierans
zest for life andmake themost of the
time God gives us here on Earth,
Reddell stated.

News in brief
SNOW WHITE: Somerset
West resident Ben Visser (82),
together with his son, Leon
(51), and grandson, Brandon
(23), climbed Sneeukop in the
HottentotsHolland mountains
last Saturday. Visser said he
has been a regular hiker since
his retirement in 1992 and it
was an honour for the three
generations to reach the top of
Sneeukop in 11 hours and 40
minutes together. It could not
have been at a better time to
attempt this epic event, seeing
that I have been blessed with
good health, but at a slower
pace to achieve this at my ripe
age of 82.

DELIAH BRINKHUIS
Daarwas nhardeplofgeluid,
gevolg deur nkreet omhulp.
Hierna, vertel Herman de
Vries van Somerset-Wes, was
daar ngeskarrel inallerigtings
soos wat mense hulle na die to-
neelgehaashetwaardiebeseer-
de Kieran Schultz (14) in vlak
water gel het.
Kieran,die seunvandieSuid-
Afrikaanse akteurs en Somer-
set-Wes-inwoners Waldemar
Schultz en Ira Blanckenberg
het verlede Saterdag in n frats-
ongeluk in Hermanus, gesterf.
Kieran en n vriend, Gustav
Eichstdt het saam met sy pa
die Kalfiefees bygewoon waar
sy pa aan twee produksies deel-
geneem het.
Kieranhet na bewering onge-
veer 13:00 oor n lae muur by n
uitkykpunt by die Ou Hawe ge-
benede in kniediep-water in n
rotsagtige gebied geval.
Volgens DeVries vanWalker
Bay Adventures was hy en n
toergroep op die skeepshelling
by die hawe, toe die fratsonge-
luk gebeur het.
Almal was geskok, veral toe
hulle besef het dit was n kind
wat seergekry het en omstan-
ders die nooddienste ontbied,
het De Vries ges.
Volgens De Vries het sy gids
Riaan Kloppers en twee medie-
se dokterswat deel vandie toer-
groep was onmiddellik hulp
aan Kieran verleen.
Die Burger het berig dat Wal-
demar en n vriend by n koffie-
winkel by die hawe was en dat
hy gou op die toneel was.
Volgens n omstander wat
verkies om anoniem te bly, was
Kieran bewusteloos en het die
dokters mond-tot-mond-asem-
haling op hom toegepas toe die
paramedici sowat vyf minute
later opgedaag het.
n Geskokte Waldemar het
langs sy seun gekniel en met sy
linkerhand oor sy mond gevou,
sy seun se hand in sy regter-
hand vasgehou.
Volgens die bron het parame-
dici en die dokters sowat 20 mi-
nute gespook om Kieran by te
bring en te stabiliseer. Kieran
is later met veelvuldige kopbe-
serings in die Hermanus-hospi-
taal opgeneemwaarhysowat30
minute later aan sy beserings
beswyk het.
Hierdie is die derde onge-
luk by di uitkykpunt. DieHer-
manus Times het in 1999 berig
oor n man wat noodlottig be-
seer is toe hy oor die muur ge-
klimhet. In 2011 is nDuitse toe-
ris ernstig beseer toe sy by die
krans afgeval het.

Die twee diewe wat verlede maand
in die dak van Primre Skool Rust-
hof in die Strand betrap is, beweer
hulle het daar gaanwegkruip nadat
skelms hulle gejaag het.
Di weergawe is Dinsdag in die
Strand-landdroshof gehoor, toe
LanddrosKarenScheepersheteg-

vonnis.
Die DistriksPos het vroer berig
hoe beamptes van ADT-sekuriteit
kort n 07:00 op Sondag 7 Julie die
tweeverdagtes opheter daadbetrap
het, nadat die skool se alarm geakti-
veer is.
Tydens die hofverrigtinge van-
deesweek het die staat twee getuies
ingeroep. Jakobus Adendorf, ADT-
beampte wat op daardie dag op die
toneel was, was die staat se tweede
getuie. Hy het getuig dat hy verster-
king ingeroep het kort nadat hy by
die skool aangekomhet en n geraas
in die dak van die administratiewe
eenheid gehoor het.
Ek het myself gedentifiseer en
hulle (die mans in die dak) geroep
om af te kom, en een van hulle het,
hetAdendorfges, terwylhybeskul-
digde een (Roos) uitgewys het.
Adendorf het verder getuig dat hy
n paar harde kapgeluide gehoor
diemanagternagesit engevang.Die
man het toe aan hom ges dat hy
weghardloop vir die skurke.
Staatsaanklaer Clement Abra-
hams het aan Adendorf gevra wie
die man was wat weggehardloop
het, waarna hy beskuldigde twee
(Robertson) uitgewys het.
Die twee beskuldigdes het ook
daarna die getuiebankbetree.Albei
weergaweop n leuengegrond is.Hy

skynlik vind.

gehardloop.

Penguin rescuedonGBbeach
JAMEY THOMAS
Whatwas supposed to be a relaxing day at the beach
turned into a scene reminiscent ofMr Poppers Pen-
guinsandHappyFeet forCoenie vanNiekerkandhis
family.
Ayoungpenguincamehoppingoutof thewateraround
13:40 onSaturday (10August), exploring the shore ofGor-
dons Bay Main beach.
VanNiekerk, a SomersetWest resident recalls basking
in the warmwinter sunwith his wife, Kerrinwhile their
four children Nathan (10), Seth (8), Sarah (5) andMicah
(3) weresplashingaround in thewater.Suddenly,Sarah
yelled, Penguin!
Upon inspection, Van Niekerk saw the grey African
penguin frolicking in the water. Instead of shying away,
the penguin made its way out of the water, shook itself
and strolled aroundwhile soaking up the attention of ad-
mirers.
Van Niekerk says the penguin portrayed a real Im
the man attitude.
Every movement he made was bold and he wasnt
phased by anything or anyone. He walked around like
he owned the beach, said a fascinatedVanNiekerk, who
realised the little penguin was acting very abnormally
and needed expert help.
Van Niekerk contacted the Southern African Founda-
tion for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB)
whoadvisedhimtotakethebirdtoarehabilitationcentre
in Somerset West. He placed the penguin in a green Pick
n Pay cooler bag to avoid direct contact and with a lot
of juggling to keep it inside, the family took it to the Bird
and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
By then, of course, names for the penguin had already
become the main topic of discussion. Or as Sarah very
cleverly put it, Joe, if its a boy; Joey, if its a girl. How-
ever, there was no time to determine its gender, and the
little charmer was dubbed Joe the penguin regardless.
And instead of the expected racket from Joe, questions
such as, Dad, canwe please keep Joe as a pet? and Can
we get ice and put Joe in a bath? were Van Niekerks
entertainment during the drive.
According to Angela Lewis, manager of the Bird and
Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, the penguin was indeed
very sick - underweight, dehydrated, probably confused
and unable to cope on its own. The centre stabilised Joe
and gave the little patient fluids every two hours.
OnSunday, thepenguinwas takentoSANCCOBssea-
bird rehabilitationcentre inTableView for further treat-
ment. When he will be released, solely depends on his
health, said Lewis.
After explaining why the penguin cannot be kept as
a pet, van Niekerk now has to deal with, Dad, wheres
Joe? and Do you think he is on an island somewhere
enjoying the sun?. Questions Van Niekerk expects to
hear for many months to come.
) See the video footage of Joe the penguin on District-
Mails website (www.districtmail.com).

Tydens haar diplomaplegtigheid in
haar matriekjaar het een van die di-
rekteure vanWHBOKonstruksiewat
die geleentheid bygewoon het, haar
genader en haar oor haar toekoms-
planne uitgevra.

Vier jaar
later vang sy graad.

sy kon of vir twee jaar haar klerkskap doen
of vir ses maande by n regskool inskryf en
daarna haar klerkskap vir een jaar by die
regshulpraad doen.
vrugte daarvan pluk, s Mariske.
Tydens haar jaar by die regshulpraad, was
sy by die Kaapstadse Distrikshof gestasio-

steun.
Die ander twee eksamens het sy in
Augustus 2012 en in Februarie vanjaar
voltooi. Daarna het sy, met die onder-
steuning van haar bestuurder by die
regshulpraad, n aansoek ingedien om
as prokureur by die hooggeregshof in-
gesweer te word.
Einde Julie is die aansoek goedgekeur en
op 2Augustus vanjaar is sy en sowat 70 ander
kandidate ingesweer. Ek was senuagtig,
maar meer opgewonde.
Volgende op Mariske se agenda is haar eie
praktyk.

after taking the photo, a bulldozer ar
rived on the scene and moved the debris

Dustbin foragers
becoming
aggressive
Whenwill something be done about
the vagrant dustbin foragers who
are becoming increasingly aggres-
sive?
This last week we watched as
some of themactuallywrestle re-cy-
clingbagsoutof thehandsof theoffi-
cial collectors, tearing them open
and grabbing contents.
Money obtained from the sale of
the bottles, etc. then serves to pay
for alcohol and drugs.
Afterall, theirotherneedsaremet
by residents who irresponsibly do-
nate food, clothing and blankets
without insisting that they go
through an assessment and rehabil-
itation programme as is offered by
the Citys Social Development.
Those residents who want to as-
sist vagrants in a responsible man-
ner should rather hand them cou-
pons which can be purchased from
the Life Church or Night Shelter
(021 851 4984).
Presentation of the coupons enti-
tles them to ahot shower andaplate
of food, possibly an article of cloth-
ing or a bed for the night.
Social Services will put the va-
grants through a programme de-
signed to re-integrate them into so-
ciety.

Dustbindayattacksarenosurprise
Its no surprise to read about the
Somerset West dustbin day at-
tacks (DistrictMail, August 8).
Not only do criminals hide
among these so-calledhomeless,
but dustbin scavenging is in fact
a contravention of Sections 17(1)
and (2) of the City bylaws which
explain that once the bin is placed
on the sidewalk, the City of Cape
Townor its contractedservicepro-
viders have exclusive authority to
collect and remove thewaste from
residential areas/households.
There is also the serious prob-
lem of some residents keeping the
homeless on the streets by giv-
ing them money, food and blan-
kets, thereby negating the very
good work done by social services
to get them into a programme of
re-integration into society.
Only a percentage of these peo-
ple are truly homeless and many
of them flood into Somerset West
from other towns. In the words of
one of them, Somersetjie is goud
(sic).
Thosewhoarereallyinneedwill
always be assisted at the Night
Shelter and residents whowant to
see themre-integrated intosociety
can purchase coupons which can
be redeemed at the Night Shelter
where they canhave a hot shower,
a plate of food, clothes and a place
to sleep. Coupons can be bought
from the Life Church, next to the
Lord Charles, the Helderberg
Crime Watch or the Night Shelter
(021 851 4984).
Many vagrants decline assist-
ance from Social Development as
it pays them to stay on the streets,
breaking a number of bylaws,
knowing they will be kept in their
errant ways by those who do not
care about getting them out of
their self-destructive habits and
who will defend their breaking of
the laws to boot. Very often these
are the same people who decry the
high crime rate.
So herewith a big vote of thanks
to our law enforcement officers
whotryandenforce thebylawsun-
der the tryingcircumstancesofbe-
ing damned if they do and
damned if they dont.
Bylaws need to be enforced
againstallwhobreakthemandnot
just tax-paying citizens. Then per-
haps we may reclaim our streets,
our pavements and our parks.

Analoofwoof fromdoggieparlours unfriendly staff
We are bull terrier parents, which
by the nature of their short coat,
afford us the opportunity to bath
and groom them ourselves.
About a year ago though we de-
cided to adopt a needy pet, and
found a lovely puppy from Town-
ship Animal Rescue in Somerset
West.
We quickly got attached to her,
andsoonshewas in thedoggiepar-

Sadly, from the get go and on
subsequent visits,wediscovereda
blunt and aloof attitude displayed
by staff (all young ladies).
My wife recently visited the
practice to purchase something
and left flabbergasted at the gener-
al superior attitude and general
unfriendly tone of the place.
Now, almost twelve months lat-
er we could not take it any more
and contacted another grooming
parlour. They casually asked if we
were new to the Helderberg. Con-
fiding that we were in fact well-
seated residents, theyvolunteered
that wemust have been at our pre-
vious grooming parlour because
all their new clients come from
there.
To our amazement they con-
firmed that all had the same com-
plaint about our previous groom-
ing parlour a stiff, blunt and un-
friendly attitude.
I tried to make contact with the
owner, then experienced the same
attitude which sticks like putty
on the staff. They say a fish rots
from the head down ...

Formanyofus theheavyrain, show-

the remainder of the week simply
mean wrapping ourselves up
against the elements and spending
more time indoors.
Thisis,unfortunately,notthecase
for the many people who live on the
streets or inmakeshift shanties that
repeatedly leak or flood whenever
there are heavy downpours.
Everywinter these poor people do
whatever they can to staywarmand
dry, but more often than not, fail
miserably.
Besides the people who suffer in
thisway, therearealsodomesticani-
mals (cats and dogs) roaming the
streets, scavenging for food and
looking for a place to staywarm and
dry.
Fortunately, there are many peo-
ple and organisations in the Helder-
berg working tirelessly and unsel-
fishly to help people as well as ani-
mals in need.
These organisations are always in
needof funds, food,blanketsandoth-
er donations which are almost al-
ways in short supply.
Those of us who are able to allevi-
ate some of the suffering andmisery
experiencedbypeople less fortunate
than ourselves, or the animals in
need of care and food, should help
out by supporting the various chari-
ties, welfare groups and soup kitch-
ens in our area.
We can also contribute money in
the midst of a demanding and busy
day. Next time a volunteer raises
funds for a local charity, spare amo-
ment to consider themerits andgive
a fewcoinsornotes, insteadof ignor-
ing them and hurrying on.

Towannabemulti-millionaires
Thankyou for the
responses to the
article in which I
wrote how
R10 000 invested
in 1975 grew to be
worth R122 mil-
lion today. Can
this be correct?
There must be a
catch? Well, in a
way there is, and
that is time value
of money.
Comparing the R10 000 in
1975toR122Mtodayismislead-
ing in thatyouare ignoring the
time value of money. In 1975
R10 000 was a lot of money, a
third of the value of my dads
house, however it seems an in-
significant amount when com-
pared to R122M today and this
is because we are comparing a
value in 1975 to a value today.
The R10 000 of 1975 is like in-
vestingR1million today, equal
toathirdofmydadshouseval-
ue today and thus a fairer way
to illustrate how to become a
multi-millionaireoverthenext
38 years.
For those wannabe multi-
millionaires dont let this put
you off investing.
Below is an extract from an
article posted by Garth on
Traders Corner Blog explain-
ing thevalueof investing early
and compounding returns,
whichAlbert Einstein once re-
ferred to as the
eighth wonder of
the world. If you
can consistently
achieve a 15% com-
pound annualised
return, your invest-
ment will double
every five years.
For my newborn
son,thatmeansthat
the investment I
make for him now
will have the oppor-
tunity to double 12
timesbythetimehereaches60.
To put this into perspective, it
means that a R100 000 invest-
ment now could grow to over
R1,8Mbythetimeheis21years
old, and to over R400 M by the
time he is 60. Thats assuming
a lump sum investment with
no additions to the initial in-
vestment. The key is to be able
to achieve that 15% p.a.com-
pounded return, and to do that
requires the correct asset allo-
cation and stock selection.
Withall duerespect toGarth
the secret is not so much find-
ing the next Allan Gray, but
simply to start investing early
andlet thepowerofcompound-
ing interest do the rest.
