FROM THE HEAD FOX Chapter Director
Steve Sprenkle
Hello chapter F. How is everyone doing this month? Great, I hope.
Earlier last month I was talking to an almost new member of our chapter. He was telling me that the stator on
his bike had gone bad. He found a way to be able to drive his gold wing (a 1983 I think) without replacing the
stator. He installed a toggle switch that will enable him to turn off the headlight while driving the bike. He uses
a jump box to start it and while he is driving. He turns off the head light. I told him that I thought that it was a
law that always required the head light to be on. He wasn’t sure and neither was I so I looked it up on the inter-
net and found this article. It does state that we are required to have headlights on while on our motorcycles.
For your enjoying pleasure please, refer to the article I found, below.
Required by law — Eighteen states have a headlight law that it is required. It doesn’t matter what model year you ride, the headlight must be on all the time. For those that have older models where the headlight has a switch, start practicing turning it on after you start the motorcycle. Required and modulation allowed — Almost half of the United States allow for a “modulating headlight” to be used, and the headlight use is a requirement. That means your light can change between full power low beam and a dimming effect. It does not turn off and, but dims and goes back to full power over and over. This is more eye-catching to your fellow motorists and offers a better chance to be seen and recognized in traffic. Required with model year stipulations — Seven of the states require headlights to be used after a certain model year, but the oldest allowed motorcycle is a 1956 model year in Indiana. No requirement — As mentioned, very few states don’t require a headlight to be used during the daylight hours. Without the requirement, we do recommend you stay in the practice of using it regardless.
I found this article at the web address: https://www.motorcyclelegalfoundation.com/state-by-state-guide-to-motorcycle-laws/ this website had a lot of good information, and they have a map that shows all the states and their requirements.

Three Days in God’s Country
by
Michael R. Douglas
October is a beautiful time of the year in the mountains and since I couldn’t bring the mountains to me, I decided to head for them. After a relaxing weekend in San Jose, I pointed my trusty steed (actually my 1985 Limited Edition Wing) to the East and headed out. Once passed Stockton, I picked up California route 88 and began climbing through the mountains of northern California. The weather was absolutely beautiful. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperature was a comfortable 70 degrees.
Route 88 is a very well maintained two-lane highway that gradually (well most of the time anyway) winds its way through some of the most beautiful timberline that I have ever seen. The mountains just seem to roll on from one summit to the next for as far as the eye can see. Once cresting Carson Pass, the view is spectacular. Off in the distance you get a glimpse of one of the many mountain lakes that would be encountered on this journey. This particular one is known as Twin Lakes and is surrounded by majestic snow capped peaks that seem to isolate you from the rest of the world. You can almost imagine how the first settlers must have felt as they passed through this area. Of course, my journey was made quite a bit easier since I had a nice paved road to lead me on my way.
Once back on the motorcycle, it was a nice leisurely ride down the mountain where route 89 waited to take me north. Up over one more mountain and it was down into south Lake Tahoe. It looked like a good time for a short breather and topping off the gas tank seemed like a good excuse, so I wheeled my machine into one of the local service stations. Again it was back into the saddle and the western side of Lake Tahoe seemed to beckon me. The first and probably most fascinating of the many scenic views was the one overlooking Emerald Bay. I never knew that water could be so blue. It was like looking at an artist's conception of the perfect lake. The remainder of the journey around the lake offered more of the same beauty. Small coves and bays dotted the shoreline while tall pines seemed to stand guard so that no harm would come to the lake. The end of the loop finds you back in south Lake Tahoe. On route 89 south the quaint little town of Markleeville soon comes into view. The Aspen were in full bloom adding their wondrous touch to the splendor of the surrounding countryside. Monitor Pass soon followed and as evening drew near, I found myself in the town of Bridge-port. As the last traces of sunlight disappeared behind the mountains, I settled in for the night at a local motel.
The following morning was quite a bit different from the southern California weather to which I have grown so accustomed. The mercury dipped down into the single digits, so it was a quick dash to the nearby restaurant and straight to the coffee pot for me. I decided to let the mercury climb before trying to tackle Tioga Pass on my way into Yosemite National Park, so a visit to the ghost town of Bodie seemed like a good idea. Bodie was once a thriving mining town, but has now been turned into a California Registered Histor-ical Landmark. The State Park Commission has done a superb job of preserving Bodie and if you are ever in the area, you should take some time out to pay it a visit.
By the time I had finished with Bodie, the temperature had risen from cold to brisk, so onward and upward to Tioga Pass and it's towering 9945 foot summit. Once in Yosemite, you will find some of the country where God must have spent overtime creating. Sev-eral lakes dotted the mountain range and each as tranquil as the previous one. Continuing through the park you will pass such sights as El Captain, Bridal Veil Falls and Half Dome before heading for the exit. One quick yet important note, on your way out, be sure to stop outside the Wawona Tunnel for a very breath-taking view of the Yosemite valley.
Fresno lies south of the park on route 41. With plenty of sunlight still left, a quick side trip up route 168 seemed in order. More and more of this beautiful scenery awaits your pleasure. Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake are just a couple of the tranquil and peace-ful views you will come across before heading back to Fresno and a nights rest.
The third day’s dawn broke just as it had the previous two. Sunny and clear. Today’s adventure would lead through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. The Kings river twists and turns its way through Kings Canyon and passed more of God ’s handiwork. The colors of autumn were outstanding and Grizzly Falls was just one more of the beautiful creations encountered. Following the river back out of the canyon and on to the land of the mighty Sequoias. The first to make his greeting is General Grant, standing proud over his forest. The road continues to wind passed the General Sherman, Auto Log and Tunnel log before ending up at Morro Rock. When you stop at Morro rock, make sure that you take plenty of film with you because the view is, to quote a southern California term, “AWESOME!”. One word of caution though, the climb is steep (and boy do I mean STEEP!), but worth every huff and puff. I quickly realized that I was not in a good of shape as previous thought. Luckily, several benches and resting areas await your company both along the way and at the bottom. The way out of the park is very steep and has many hairpin turns, so exercise caution as you drive it. There were several times where I swear I could see my stuffed dog riding shotgun on the travel trunk.
Once down the mountain, the remainder of the journey was straight and quick. That is except for the part in Valencia where the highway patrol thought that it was a bit too quick. Oh well, such is life in the fast lane (ha ha). The only regret I have is not having more time to spend exploring because this is definitely God’s country.

Where Can I Take an Advanced or Experienced Rider Course?
We are frequently asked where these courses are available so here is a list of the courses in California
that are accepted by GWRRA National Rider Education. If you come upon a class that is not listed,
please contact us and we’ll check to be sure it’s approved before you take it.
GWRRA offers Advanced Rider and Trike Rider Courses at various times throughout the year. Gen-
erally these are available at District rallies and at Wing Ding. Additionally if an instructor and an appro-
priate facility are available the courses may be available at other times during the year and we will put
that information out to the Chapter.
Lee Parks Total Control Advanced Rider Clinic now runs the California Motorcyclist Safety Program
for the CHP. The schedule is available on line & course locations vary.
Additionally if you are former military and have access to a base, you can take the Total Control Inter-
mediate course on a space available basis. Unfortunately they do not take trikes.
Street Masters Precision Cornering Workshop is based out of Corona and the course is held in
Rosamond at the Willow Springs Race Track on Horsethief Mile. All their information is available on
line. They do a trike class as well as a 2-wheel class.
The Honda Rider Education Center in Coulton is located close to the 215/10 freeway junction at
1301 Via Venita. Their phone # is 909-430-3000. The contact person is Gary Johnson and Mercedes
does the class scheduling. The class is open to all GWRRA Members. The BRC-2 class (formerly
known as the Experienced Rider Course or ERC) takes 4-5 hours primarily on the course and costs
$75. There also is a 7 hour ERC class targeted to Military sport bike riders.
You can call and fit into an already scheduled class or a group of 5-6 can arrange their own group
class. If a second instructor is available the class could be 10-12 students. Unfortunately, they do not
take trikes.
We hope this information is helpful.
