North Region Board Member Update June Marshall, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Greetings to District-4 Members from your newest North Region member of the TNA Board of Directors! These are exciting times for Texas Nurses. As most of you know from the emails, articles and other communications, on September 26, 2011, the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, the Texas Team Coalition was selected as an official Texas Action Coalition. Texas Nurses Association and Blue Cross Blue Shield share important leadership responsibilities for the Texas Action Coalition. Clair Jordan is quoted below in a press release from PR Newswire (2011).

“If future demand is to be met for safe, high quality, accessible and affordable health care, the roles of many health care professions must be reconsidered and nursing

is certainly no exception,” said Clair Jordan, MSN, RN, executive director of Texas Nurses Association. “Nurses are integral to overcoming our health care challenges. With the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the U.S., and continuing to face a severe nursing shortage in the future, Texas is in dire need of the transformations outlined in the IOM report.”

Some additional updates include important strategic objectives. In order to remain viable and thrive, TNA needs to increase membership. TNA hopes to increase the participation of Districts in the “Member Get a Member 2012 Recruitment Campaign.” Word of mouth is the most effective recruitment tool. I encourage all District-4 members to recruit at least one member during the campaign.

TNA continues strategic efforts to impact nursing by influencing health care policy and issues in Texas and to contribute to the public image of the nursing profession. TNA’s key messages developed several years ago remain viable today:

• TNA is the only true advocate for all Texas nurses on all nursing issues.• TNA has a successful track record on what’s important to Texas nurses.• A collaborative process gets results for individuals and the profession.

In reviewing the IOM recommendations on the “Future of Nursing” (2010) and following the Texas Team activities, Texas nurses have much important work ahead. Whether it’s raising the BSN levels to 80%, doubling the number of nurses with doctorates, working to remove scope of practice barriers, expanding opportunities to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts, preparing nurses to lead change and advance health, or ensuring that all nurses engage in lifelong learning, Texas nurses in all settings and all career paths have key roles to play in achieving these recommendations. TNA needs your involvement in the organization and in your profession, as an advocate and change leader. Help us chart the course for the “Future of Nursing” in Texas!

Please feel free to contact me, if you have questions, would like additional information, or simply want to know how to get more involved with TNA. My email address is: [email protected]
