I hope this finds everyone doing good and feeling well.

This has been an exceptionally long summer so far; the weather has been unpredictable at

best. One day it is too hot to ride the next day it is too wet to ride but some of our chap-

ters have been getting some rides in. We have had two rides for the District so far. The

first one was sponsored by Brian Richards and chapter TN M. The second ride was spon-

sored by Patti Hamilton and Chapter TN A2. Both were incredibly good rides. The ride

last weekend was well attended I counted seventy-nine participants at lunch. I believe

most chapters were represented, we even had some from the Georgia District. Lunch was

served and was incredibly good. The weather was good if you came from the west, not so

much if you came from the east. I am sure you will hear more about this ride in other arti-

cles. I would like to encourage other chapters to share their favorite ride destinations with

the district. The ride does not have to be spectacular just well planned. If you have a plan

for a ride that can accommodate the district give Herschel Anderson a call at 931-306-

2740 or e-mail at [email protected] . I am sure he will help with the planning and get

you started in the right direction.

Let’s not forget the next ride that is being planned, Chapter TN C is planning a ride to the

Green Tomato Grill in Mooresburg TN. They are setting this up for September 12, 2020.

Check the flyer that is attached to this newsletter. The Green Tomato has great food and

the ride to it from anywhere is also great. Hope to see you all there.

There are also some other rides that are still being held this summer. North Carolina had

to cancel their rally this year like so many of us did but they are using that weekend to

sponsor some ride ins. They will have two ride ins in September 19 and 26 and one on

October 10. Please visit their web site http://www.gwrranc.org/ and check out the

details. Georgia will have their Ride in on October 8-10. Mississippi will have their Rally October 15-17 and

Virginia will have their Rally October 29-31. Please visit their web sites and check out the details. I am sure

all these events will be well attended since the riding season has been so short and confusing this year. Before

you head out to any event please call ahead and make sure the event is still happening. Things are changing

so fast you can never be sure what restriction will be put on gatherings by the state, county or municipality.

I believe everything is set for Spring Fling 2021, I have just a couple more things to setup and then we will be

ready to work on the registration form and get all the information out to everyone. One thing I need from all

chapters and participants is how do you plan to contribute to the rally (where would you like to work). I will

need that information very soon. You can give it to your Chapter Directors, or you can send it to me. It will

be important that we have all the help we can get next spring. We need to make this a very well-organized

rally.

We are also planning to have the Operations Meeting. We are looking at November 14, 2020 for the meeting

and I will try to find a place that will fit our group. I am considering the Wilson County Fair Grounds, like

we used last year. This will be a stand-alone meeting, meaning it will not be combined with the Winter Event.

If we do it this way, we will not be so rushed to get things completed on time. Any suggestions as far as a

better way to conduct the meeting would be appreciated. Of course, this will all be dependent on what the

State and County are allowing at the time.

We are also planning a Winter Event. Looking at a date of January 9 or 16, 2020. Looking at the same loca-

tion and it too will be a stand-alone event. We could use some ideas for a theme and what events you as a

district would like to have. Please take a minute and let us know what you would like.

Until next time ride safe and take care of your health. Let’s all get back to Gatherings as soon and as safe as

we can.

It's almost fall of the year!! This year has absolutely gone by so fast, even with all the changes we have had

to endure. It's great to see that Chapters are beginning to have their monthly gatherings and also enjoying

riding again. What better way to practice "Social Distancing" than riding with fellow Goldwingers.

We hope everyone enjoyed the District ride that Chapter A2 had to Red Boiling Springs. That is one of our

favorite rides. We also understand that members of Chapter C that attended the ride, have decided to be-

come professional Ghost Busters!!

We also want to remind everyone that Chapter C will be having a Northeast Tennessee ride September

12th. We will be riding the beautiful areas of TN and VA and having lunch at the Fried Green Tomato. If

you need more information, there is a flyer on Group Works, or you may call Tom Jarrell at 423-383-0339

or Ray Hall at 423-676-1127

Everyone please be safe and we hope to see you soon!!

Although September 12, 2020 would have been the 25th anniversary event at the Hospital, COVID19 changed everything. We will be mailing our fund raising money to the Hospital this year. The address is

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital P.O. Box 1999 Memphis, TN 38101

Make check or money order payable to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Do not send cash. Thanks, Tom Jarrell

Wings Across Tennessee

The History

by

Tom Jarrell, Chapter Historian,

Gold Wing Road Riders Association, TN-C, Tri City Wings

The Wings Across Tennessee is a 500 mile charity ride from Bristol, TN to St. Jude Children's

Research Hospital in Memphis. The Ride has generated $2,320,470 in its twenty-four year history. Mike

Taylor of Elizabethton, TN and a member of Tennessee Chapter C, made the suggestion that since our

Chapter and its members have been so blessed to live in this great country and able to own and ride the

finest motorcycles in the world, we may want to consider having a fundraiser for a worthy charity. Mike

and wife Carolyn were friends with Ginger, a patient at St. Jude Children's Hospital. The Chapter chose

St. Jude Hospital as their charity project in 1996. The first fundraising event was organized by Mike Tay-

lor (a Cruise-In) at the Pizza Inn in Elizabethton. Everyone was invited to come show their motorcycles

and car and have their picture made for a donation to St. Jude Hospital. $5000 was raised at the Cruise-In.

Eight members of the Tri City Wings Gold Wing Chapter rode to the Hospital in Memphis in October,

1996 and presented the $5000. The eight original members were Mike and Carolyn Taylor, Jon and Nancy

Byrd, Keith Marsh, James Daugherty, Lawrence Roberts, and Nyoka Holder. Ginger (the St. Jude patient)

also went. Ginger rode part way behind Mike and took breaks riding with the ladies in a van.

Tom Jarrell coined the name Wings Across Tennessee and the Chapter invited all motorcycle

groups to have a fundraiser and participate in the Ride.

The Ride continued to grow over the years with not so much as a single accident, until this year's ride,

September 6-7, 2019. Tragically Tiffany Wortman crashed and lost her life on her first St. Jude Benefit

ride. A memorial has been established by the Hospital in her memory. Her death has so devastated every-

one in the Chapter, the Wings Across Tennessee St. Jude Hospital Benefit ride will cease to exist. The

Chapter will continue having local fundraising events for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Assistant District Director Middle/West TN

Vickie and Troy Hurt

Hello from Middle Tennessee It is hard to believe this year is more than half over. It has been a very different year, the virus has caused several events to be canceled but we hope it will be over soon. The District ride had a huge turnout we heard there was 80 plus people there. Still don't know how Dennis came up with that total he only has 10 fingers & 10 toes! Got to pick on him folks! A special thanks to Patti and Gary for setting this ride up. Here in Middle Tennessee two Chapters have lost their gathering places for good. Chapter H in Franklin Tennessee that meet at the Shoney's has closed and is up for sale. And Chapter Z in Columbia Tennessee had the same problem. Chapter Z has been meeting at Pam & Charlie's home, they did have a gathering at the VFW in Columbia this past Month. And as far as we know they still have the Couple of the Year Plaque. So if you are planning on visiting any Chapter you may want to call the Chapter Director and make sure they are meeting and where. We want to thank the Chapter Directors for keeping us informed about changes and some canceled their gatherings to do other things. As of this writing the plaques locations are Middle Tennessee Plaque is at Chapter Q, Couple of the Year is at Chapter Z, Tennessee Traveling Plaque is at Chapter E. But check and make sure the plaques will be up for grabs before making the trip. We want to remind everyone to check your membership due dates several are coming up due, also we would like to thank the Chapter Directors and their members for all you do it really makes us proud. District Couple of the Year Coordinators

Hi Everyone, a big shout out to all our Tennessee GWRRA membership. Hope you all have been enjoying

your summer riding season. Seems like everything is being disrupted from our regular schedule these days.

Many events and gatherings have been rescheduled or even canceled. Our Spring Fling has been put off until

2021. Hope this gives our Chapter Directors a chance to look at their approach to the Couple of the Year

program. Every chapter needs to honor some special couple within their chapter. Let us take this extra time

to put a team together and choose that special couple to honor and thank for their extra effort they have

shown in their chapter. New folks, old timers, even those couples who may have been previously selected to

represent their Chapter as the couple of the year. Your Officers handbook is an excellent reference for com-

plete guidelines and policies to help better understand the Couple of The Year program. As mentioned in the

past, a good suggestion is to make your selection towards the end of the year at one of your Holiday gather-

ings. We all hope the 2021 season will be a new beginning for all of us.

2020 TN District Couple of the Year Since our last newsletter article, we have been able to be a bit more suc-

cessful at getting around visiting TN District Chapters. As we all know, with the Covid-19 virus situa-tion, things have been chaotic, and the need to contact Chapter Directors prior to making plans to visit is paramount. You can’t be sure the chapter is even going to have a gathering that month, OR, where they are going to have it, with so many places still closed.

We did manage though to get to a few chapters. After accompanying TN-T on their trip to Elrod

Falls, reported in last month’s article, we were able to visit the TN-A2, Maryville chapter gathering on July 20th. August started out fairly well for us for visiting, on the 4th we attended TN-B, Knoxville’s chapter gathering. Then that following weekend we planned a long day of it.

We left real early Saturday morning, the 8th, and drove out to attend the TN-E, Smyrna chapter gath-

ering. We got more than we bargained for with that visit, they were ending up a fund-raising drive for St. Jude, with drawing of raffle tickets, and a silent auction of many nice donated items after the gathering was over. We were even successful at the one item in the auction that I really wanted.

After leaving Smyrna, we goofed off and traveled slowly to Columbia, to attend TN-Z’s chapter

gathering that afternoon. They were meeting in a new place, a VFW hall, set up with members bringing food for a pot-luck, and the food, as usual for any GWRRA group, was fantastic.

After TN-Z’s gathering, we hit the road heading home. Made for a long day, but it was nice, and we

enjoyed visiting the two chapters and meeting up with some friends. Our last visitations for this month’s article were a long trip to TN-C Kingsport on the 18th, and a

nice visit with them at their new location of a Bob Evan’s, then on the 20th we visited TN-F, Morristown, also at a new location, for a brown bag picnic dinner (first time I ever heard of a picnic dinner, it’s always been a picnic lunch, but what the heck). Although I have to say that rather than a bunch of brown bag/

cooler dinners, like we brought, I saw more take-out bags from food places!

We appreciate the welcomes we have received from the chapters we have already visited, and we

will continue our plans of visiting chapters, so expect to hear from us, as we further our goal of visiting all the Tennessee chapters during our reign as the TN District 2020 Couple of the Year.

The weather seems to be cooling off a little and many more riders will be riding. With every-

thing that has been going on this year some will be riding that have not ridden much at all this

year. I’m not just talking about riders in our groups, but riders in general. This might be a

good opportunity to recruit some other riders to GWRRA regardless of what they ride. Peo-

ple are looking for things to do, people to do things with and activities that are safe. Riding is

one activity that has social distancing built in. If you get a chance to invite someone to go rid-

ing with your group do it. You may find a new member and friend. Let’s get more members,

more friends and more riders so that when this is all over and we can start back to having ral-

lies and regular activities we have a great crowd full of new people. Besides, I need some new

victims, I mean contestants, for our games, challenges and talent shows.

TN District Membership Enhancement Coordinator Report – September, 2020

Greetings from Chapter Q in Clarksville TN!

Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this profoundly disruptive period in our history. What a

time for all of us!

Because so many of us in Chapter Q are in the high-risk category, we’ve given up our every-two-week dinner

rides. Also gone is our monthly business meeting. However, beginning the end of May, we reinstated our

monthly gathering. Our monthly gatherings have really demonstrated to us how much we care for each oth-

er!

Okay, so on to Membership Enhancement activities. Chapter Q used to partner with Rural King here in

Clarksville. We would run their Customer Appreciation Day where we would serve hot dogs to customers.

We used that opportunity to collect for our charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and to also pass out GWR-

RA membership information to those who would ask about who we were. We are planning on resuming this

activity as soon as it’s safe. We are hopeful that it will be soon after the first of the year.

Chapter Q’s MEC, Tom Murray, and I have talked about setting up a table at our local Harley-Davison deal-

ership (yes, you heard right), to introduce GWRRA, hand out membership information, and talk to Harley

customers and riders about how GWRRA may be a “family friendly” alternative to the typical Harley-

Davison club. We also have another motorcycle dealership here in Clarksville where we plan to do the same

thing.

While our rides here at Chapter Q have been limited, one or two of us do manage to take short rides around

the area. It would seem that as our Chapter ages, we are becoming more of a social club which is fine with

all of us because we really get along well together.

If any of you have any other ideas that you would like to share, please let me know.

Stay safe, happy, and well!

TennesseDistrict MFA/CPR Coordinators

Hello everyone!

I hope this finds you well and happy. There hasn’t been much going on in the MFA/CPR world lately.

It seems to me that most people are staying in and social distancing. There doesn’t seem to be much interest in

Chapter visitation or plaque chasing at this time. I hope that everyone is trying to stay in touch either by tele-

phone, email, or texting. Maybe at some point soon, our world will return to some sense of normalcy. Until that

time we can dream of long rides on twisty roads, Dairy Queens and locations that actually have restrooms avail-

able.

We look forward to seeing you on the road soon!

TN District News Page 11

Life is all about change. Think about it, we go from outhouses to the moon in our lifetime. There is an awful

lot of changes being made. The changes that we're going through now none of us could have ever imagined.

It affects our attitude, our way of thinking and everything we do. We should not let some things change our

life as drastically as it has with the pandemic. We've lost touch with friends, friendships and our way of life

as we knew it. We're losing things that we cherished; riding motorcycles, going out to eat with friends and

seeing family, to name a few. Most of all, I've seen a lot of change in people when they're angry. That af-

fects your driving, whether it be a vehicle or motorcycle.

I am totally against the idea that we can't ride motorcycles and be safe doing it. If you can hop in the car and

go to the grocery store with all that madness going on and people all around you that come from every-

where. You literally have no control over the people around you in a grocery store. But you sure can go on a

motorcycle ride with your chapter and your friends. If it's nothing more than to go to a state park or have a

picnic. I know because we have done this. I think we need to continue riding and even ride more. You can

practice the safeness of this Corona thing better in the open air than you can in a grocery store. Let's all get

back to riding. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to have a chapter meeting. Although we still do. If

that's done right, it can be done very easily, very safely.

When you see somebody like Richard Griffin, that rides virtually every day very safe and he gets plenty of

wind therapy. He's probably riding more in one week than all of us have in the past 6 months. There's no

question it can be done. It's just the willingness to be safe and go do what you love.

Want to apologize to everybody for not being able to get an article written last month.

Took medical leave from work and eventually retired. Doctor had me on 4 different medications for high

blood pressure. Stress is a killer if you're not careful. Sold the farmhouse and had to get all that packed up

and moved out. Then in the midst of trying to get the house packed up my sister required emergency sur-

gery. For those of you that have not had family or friends in the hospital during this pandemic, we are una-

ble to go in to see her. She has dementia and doesn't understand. She will be in the nursing home for the rest

of her life. So now we will be packing up her home. She had four cats. They are taken care of. She has a

horse. We are looking for a home for her too.

Debb and I look forward to returning to some semblance of Norm. We will be visiting your chapters as soon

as we can.

This has certainly been an interesting year!!! With so many things going on it is difficult to remember all of

them but one of the best was the multi chapter ride in to Red Boiling Springs to the Thomas House Hotel

August 15th. I didn’t get an actual count but I believe it was around 90. It was great being able to see every-

one and all the bikes. In middle TN it was overcast and cool but dry. East TN did have rain coming over but

it didn’t dampen the spirits. I think everyone had a good time.

We have another multi chapter ride this month in East TN. On the 12 of September TN-C will host a ride

starting at the I-26 Kingsport Welcome Center. They will leave at 10am (EDT), Head north on US23 in-

to Virginia, travel along the Clinch River Valley and on to Mooresburg. Around noon lunch will be at the

Green Tomato Grill. Look for more information from your Chapter Directors as I will send more detailed

information to them so mark your calendars.

More to come, until then ride safe and have fun!!!

??? WHY A RIDER COURSE ??? (Portions taken from GWRRA Gimme 5)

With things starting to open up due to the current pandemic, a Trike Rider Course is set up for October 24,

2020 with Chapter Z in Columbia, TN. The classroom location will be at 204 Sewanee Circle, Columbia TN

38401 at 8:30 AM Central Time. The Range site will be at Maury Hills Church. Registration is on the District

web page as well as Groupworks, plus it will be included at end of this newsletter. Contact Gary Hamilton or

Charlie Huffman to sign up. Current required COVID 19 safety guidelines will be adhered to. Should anything

change, information will be sent out.

This question is one that many of us find easy to answer. What we may not understand is why anyone would

need to ask. There are some riders in each of our chapters that choose not to participate in an instructed Rider

Course. Let’s examine this and try to understand why, and look at what a Rider Course can do for you.

Some may say, “I’ve been riding for years. I don’t need to take a class.” Others will boast about the miles they

have accumulated on two wheels and ask “what can they teach me?” Have you ever tried to persuade someone

with that attitude that a Rider Course might help them be an even better rider? Their position can be so negative

and so strongly put that you don’t want to talk to them about the benefits of rider training. Sometimes, people

hide their self-doubt behind a curtain of confidence and bluster. Is it possible to have all the knowledge and skill

necessary to avoid any accident? Well, if one chooses not to ride very far or very often, then perhaps it is possi-

ble. But I wouldn’t want to bet my life on it!

Do you remember a single season in your riding career without at least one close call or near miss due to anoth-

er motorist’s driving behavior? How about a single month? If you ride around the state or across the country, you

expose yourself to many different situations that require anticipation of all the possible actions of other drivers.

You have to be prepared to counter with the proper response – whatever their action – and do it in a split second!

A motorcycle Rider Course helps prepare you mentally and physically to execute the kinds of maneuvers called

for by a driver’s unexpected actions. We look upon these classes as an opportunity to learn and improve our

riding skills in a safe environment.

The instructors are trained to spot the little techniques during range exercises that riders tend to forget to em-

ploy on the road. They provide reminders to all students in a positive manner. Their trained eyes and construc-

tive comments are geared to put each of us on the path to being the safest riders we can be. This can help with

your attitude and performance on the road. Being reminded of the best techniques to execute different skills

does not hurt at all. It is painless. The practice and coaching help to improve our skills, whether we never knew

the technique to use, or just need the occasional reminder. Hey, who doesn’t appreciate a reminder from time to

time? Especially when it is about something you want to do correctly and safely, but may have just forgotten the

best method.

Page 17 TN District News

In athletic training we are taught that practice makes perfect. And when you practice something you enjoy do-

ing, it’s just a lot of fun! Practicing motorcycle riding maneuvers in a closed parking lot with someone else (the

instructors) monitoring the range to protect the riders from outside hazards helps you focus your attention on

the task at hand – becoming a better rider!

On another level, taking a Rider Course will help you qualify for advancement in the Rider Education Levels

Program, to Level II or above, or keep you current in your present level. And there is one more thing to re-

member about all GWRRA Rider Course offerings. Nobody fails! Everyone who completes the course receives

a course completion card. There are no minimum performance requirements. You are asked to push yourself to

improve your abilities. You won’t get better at it if you don’t try. Sign up for a Rider Course today. You will

thank yourself later!

Be Safe & Enjoy the Ride

District University Coordinators

David & Karen Hill

When we mentioned in last month’s article that we could teach our own classes online, we were given

wrong information: we are NOT authorized to teach online classes in our District. Only the online classes

published in www.gwrradot.com are authorized. These classes are taught by University Assistants and

that’s it.

Since certified instructors in our District are not allowed to teach classes, then how do we maintain our Uni-

versity certification? Well, we can’t. But since we cannot teach, the University has extended the time to

teach the required two classes to maintain certification to the end of 2021. However, we can still maintain

our other requirements for certification; such as MFA and on bike riding course. Karen and I need to work

hard to have as many instructors as possible participate in teaching a course at Spring Fling 2021.

For all members, courses are available online. As of August 18, these are the classes that were posted on the

www.gwrradot.com website:

To enroll in these classes, go to www.gwrradot.com. About the middle of the page will be a green banner

moving across the screen – click on it. This will bring up a form which will allow you to select a class. You

will have to fill in information such as member number, district, chapter and maybe a couple of other items.

You will receive an email notification that you have been enrolled. When you complete the class, your

name will be added to a class roster so you will receive credit for the class.

If you haven’t taken one of these classes, take one, you just might like it!

We’ll see you on the road!
