1.0 OBJECTIVES OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy
enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
1) The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service
2) High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of
the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each
Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society
3) The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal,
business, and community life
4) The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and
peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.
1.1 The Four-Way Test
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for
their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than
100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

1.2 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF ROTARY, ROTARACT AND INTERACT 1.2.1 ROTARY
Rotary is a worldwide service organization of professionals and business men and women established in 1905. The goal of Rotary is to foster interactions between the various professions and occupations with the aim of serving communities and making the world a better place. Rotary consists of over 32,000 Rotary Clubs across the world with a combined membership of over 1.2 million Rotarians serving communities through their professions and businesses. Rotary Clubs bring people together where they exchange ideas and act to change the world. Rotary International (RI) supports the Rotary Clubs by coordinating global programs and initiatives and providing a worldwide administrative framework. Rotary Foundation is a nonprofit organization fully funded by generous donations from Rotarians, non-Rotarians and other benefactors and in turn it uses these resources to fund projects initiated and managed by Rotarians and various service partners in communities across the world. All service efforts in Rotary are focused towards promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies. 1.2.2 ROTARACT (ROTARY IN ACTION) Rotary Clubs sponsor Rotaract Clubs whose membership consists of young men and women aged 18-30 years in universities and communities across the world. The goals of Rotaract are to develop professional and leadership skills amongst its members who organize service activities; to emphasize the worth, respect and rights of others; to recognize the dignity and value of all useful occupations as an opportunity to serve and to provide an opportunity for the members to serve their community. These Rotaract Clubs are managed and funded independently by the Rotaractors under the mentorship of the sponsoring Rotary Clubs.
1.3 ROTARY MOTTO
Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s
more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful
community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
Rotary enjoys a rich and sometimes complex tradition and organizational structure, with
many programs that can be confusing to new and even not-so-new members.

1.5 ROTARY CLUB OF BUNGOMA MAGHARIBI
From the name, the word ‘magharibi’ is a Swahili name meaning western, as per the compass.
Its locality is the western region of Kenya, with its members mainly from Bungoma town.
Bungoma is one of the 47 counties in Kenya. It borders Busia county, Kakamega and Trans
Nzoia counties. It also borders Uganda through Mt. Elgon as it can be located on the map.
The Rotary Club of Bungoma Magharibi was duly chartered in September 2019. This was
after the club had gone through a number of challenges such as raising the required
membership. It took the experience of the two founder Rotarians Peter Mudanya and Peter
Simiyu, formerly rotarians from previous clubs to convince and invite their friends to join
this club.
Eventually, the two founders managed to recruit a bigger team of 25 professional men and
women who enabled the club to get certified by Rotary International and later issued with its
charter certificate. The club celebrated its charter on 7th September 2019 presided over by
the 2019/20 District Governor of District 9212 Rtn Joe Otin. Since its charter, the club is
increasing its membership due to its professional and vibrant members.
The club is determined to create a positive change in Bungoma County and beyond. It intends
to put emphasis on its six areas of focus namely: Supporting Education, Fighting Diseases,
Growing Local Economies, Promoting Peace, Serving Mother & Children, and Providing Clean
Water.
1.5.1 Who We Are
Rotary Club of Bungoma Magharibi was started in 2018 and got its Charter Certificate on 7th
September 2019 officially presented by District Governor 2019-2020 Rtn Joe Otin. The
current membership is 27 members (men and women) who are professionals, business
owners, reputable community leaders, government employees and other people of good will
from Bungoma County and outside. The club was formed with its main goal being to execute
Rotary International’s objectives in our world’s most persistent issues.
Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers
who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the
globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary’s
people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on
sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to
better our world, and we stay committed to the end.
Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any
political or religious organizations.

O1.5.2 WHAT WE DO (Our Areas of Focus)
1) Supporting Education
Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic
education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase
adult literacy. This we do through scholarships, donations, and service projects
all over Kenya.
2) Fighting Diseases
We are resolved to rid the world of polio forever. . Disease does not prevent
itself. We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening
diseases and expand access to healthcare.
3) Growing Local Economies
Our members and our foundation work to strengthen local entrepreneurs and
community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities.
We provide training and access to well-paying jobs and financial management
institutions.
4) Promoting Peace
Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our
members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict,
including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and
unequal distribution of resources.
5) Serving Mother & Children
Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and
children so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality
care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for
a healthy future.
6) Providing Clean Water
We help bring sustainable clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people
every day. We don’t just build wells and walk away. We mobilize resources,
form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-
term change.

1.5.3 WHY JOIN ROTARY (BENEFITS)
1) Professional Networking
A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and
enlarge one’s circle of business and professional acquaintances. As the oldest service
club in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s
owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make
decisions and influence policy.
2) Service Opportunities
Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and
internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger,
poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians experience the fulfillment that
comes from giving back to the community.
3) International Awareness
With more than 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries & geographical areas, Rotarians
gain an understanding of humanitarian issues through international service projects
and exchange programs. One of Rotary’s highest objectives is to build goodwill and
peace throughout the world.
4) Friendship
Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that remains a major attraction of
membership today. Club members enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded
professionals, and club projects offer additional opportunities to develop enduring
friendships. Rotary club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every
city in the world.
5) Good Citizenship
Weekly Rotary club programs keep members informed about what is taking place in
the community, nation, and world and motivated to make a difference.
6) Family Foundations
Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange, educational exchange,
and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and
mentoring for young leaders and involve family members in a wide range of social and
service activities.

7) Entertainment
Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose and have fun. Every Rotary club
and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversions from today’s demanding
professional and personal schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social
events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.
8) Ethical Environment
Encouraging high ethical standards in one’s profession and respect for all worthy
vocations has been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days. In their business and
professional lives, Rotarians abide by The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say
or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it BUILD GOODWILL
and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
9) Leadership Development
Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team building, fundraising,
public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just a sampling of the
leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader
provides further experience in learning how to motivate, inspire, and guide others.
10) Diversity in Membership
Rotary’s classification system ensures that a club’s membership represents a variety
of the community’s professional men and women, including leaders in business,
industry, the arts, government, sports, the military, and religion. Rotary clubs are
nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
