Since beginning my journey as District Governor my main goal has been to serve you, the members of District 63 to the best of my ability. To encourage and assist you in achieving the goals you have set. As we approach the last four months of our Toastmasters year, I am committed to finish this year in the same manner, ensuring that District 63’s members understand that the 2010-2011 District 63 leadership is committed to putting their goals and issues where they should be…..FIRST! At the same time, District 63 leaders still have the responsibility to fulfill goals set by Toastmasters Inter-national. As District Governor, it is my responsibility to share the current standings of the District with you.

Many members have stated that the District leaders are only concerned about the numbers. Let me share my personal view of the numbers. In order for the District to be able to reach it goals, the members have to obtain theirs. So the first question to answer is which members in District 63 have set their per-sonal goal to achieve this award? Once that is answered, the only logical question remaining is “What can I do to encourage and help that member to obtain their goal?” This supports my decision to place our member’s needs first. As you see from the numbers, we have a long way to go to obtain our goals by June 30th. District 63 is no stranger to coming from behind to reach their goals. As District Governor, I am asking you to recommit to the goals you have set for this year. Go ahead and complete your next level thereby assisting District 63 to get one step closer to obtaining its goals. The song “Pass It On” begins with the words: “It only takes a spark to get a fire going! And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.” These words still continue to be true today. Because of the “fire” Toastmasters lit in me, I have been able to improve several areas of my life. I hope that as District Gover-nor, I have been able to spread enough sparks around District 63 to light a “wild fire”. I look forward to watching the fire burn in each of you as you continue to grow in your personal lives.

I hope that everyone will take a moment to read Don’s article on What It Means to be Distinguished…it really hit home for me. When we think of being Distinguished in Toastmasters, we often equate that to meeting the goals of the Distinguished Club Plan (DCP). It is a great deal more! The word “distinguished” means “marked by eminence (high rank or attainment), distinction, or excellence; to perceive or mark as being separate or

different; to set above or apart from others. Synonyms include celebrated, notable, prominent, and renowned. What a fantastic way to be defined… ”Distinguished.” We want each and every Toastmaster to know that we understand that you are Distinguished when you reach your personal goals in the Toastmasters program, no matter how large or small. Meeting your club’s DCP is no small feat; however, we want to note that you as an individual are

“Distinguished.” Let us know how you have met your personal goal for the Toastmaster year. Let us celebrate your accomplishment with you.

I realize it often seems we worry too much about reaching the goals of the District; it’s time for us to look to each individual accomplishment and understand that the goals of the District will come if we note the hard-earned accomplishments of our individual members. Thanks for all you do!

minimum an application, a break down of fees (including local club dues if applicable), an introduction to your club and Toastmasters, and contact information. Do you have visitors fill-out an information card? Why not? How do you follow up with them to invite them back? Does your club have a local newspaper? Of course it does! Just about every newspaper will let you list meeting information free of charge. If you’re a closed company club, list it in your company newsletter, put it on the bulletin board, and/or other

internal means of communication. Do you have a website? If not, it’s something to give some serious thought about adding. Most people research anything they are thinking about doing online before actually doing it so you will benefit from an online presence. Lastly, no matter how you promote your club, make sure it’s kept up-to-date because the last thing you want is someone trying to contact or visit your club with outdated information.

How many of you belong to multiple clubs or just have back copies of the Toastmasters magazine laying around? There’s a better way to utilize those magazines rather than put them in the recycle bin or letting them sit around collecting dust. How about putting a new label where the mailing address was originally with your club information and putting them in the lobby of your work, the break room, the waiting room of your doctor or dentist office? The possibilities are endless. Do you have a visitors packet? If not, I highly recommend creating one. It should have at a

Spring Slide Show Submissions Thank you for your help making the one slide show in the Fall such a success. We would love to have another one at the upcoming Spring Conference. It’s a fantastic opportunity for those in attendance to see what’s been going on around the district. This is only possible with your help. Please send picture submissions to Kristi at d63toast@gmail.com or let me know how I can obtain the photos. The more we can get from the different clubs and events around the District - the better!

I’m sure you have heard your club and district officers talk about the importance of being distinguished – our clubs, areas, divisions, and district. While it may appear that we are only concerned about the numbers, the truth of the matter is that when we are distinguished, it means that we are being served appropriately. It means that the Toastmasters program is working because we are not only setting and reaching our goals, but also improving our communication and leadership skills, as well as expanding our network of clubs and offering greater numbers of people to benefit from the program.

We have less than 4 months left in this Toastmasters year and I am challenging everyone to set and reach a goal, whether it be to give one more speech for a CC award, organize a club membership drive to get your CL award, invite 25 guests to a meeting, or help charter a new club before the year is over. Personally, I am committing to complete 3 more speeches to achieve a CC award. Does that mean that I am going to rush through 3 speeches just to achieve this goal? ABSOLUTELY NOT! It means that I will do my best to give 3 quality speeches that will not only help me

improve my communication skills, but will also help my evaluators improve his/her skills as well. If we all set and reach a goal before June 30th, it is true that we will have contributed towards our numbers, but more importantly it means that every one of us will have taken a step towards improving our own communication and leadership skills. Isn’t it a good feeling to set and reach a goal, as well as help someone else do the same? I truly believe that this is what it means to be distinguished – all of us working towards a common goal of helping each other achieve goals that we have set for ourselves.
