Imperial County providers join UDW, building power to protect homecare across California

Earlier this year, California United Homecare Workers (CUHW) merged with UDW to strengthen our voice as caregivers and help bring dignity and respect to the important work we do. IHSS providers in Imperial County are now part of UDW – welcome!

UDW members gather in Sacramento to talk with legislators about protecting IHSS.

Stronger Together

“Since 2002 I have been working as an IHSS homecare worker. For years I have been active in the union, but when I first heard about the transition I was really skeptical. So I got involved to see how it would affect us. I can now tell you that there are real benefits to being a part of UDW, such as homecare provider trainings and certifications. Also, as UDW members we recently won a much needed pay increase for providers in our county, so it’s clear that we are part of a strong union.”

“I have been my mother’s homecare provider for the past four years. Her conditions include diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure and cholesterol, arthritis, and kidney failure. After hospitalization, she is now on dialysis. I literally devote every waking hour to caring for her. As a member of UDW, I know that providers like me in Imperial County are not being ignored in Sacramento.”

“My client is paralyzed from the waist down. In 2011, she developed an abscess on her spinal cord, causing her paralysis. I’m glad to be a part of UDW, because together we are fighting to protect the homecare program for my client and all of our loved ones.”

Need help with IHSS? We are here for you!

Recently UDW helped San Diego provider Christine Nguyen win more IHSS hours for her client John. John’s hours were increased from 43 to 263 per month, and Christine was awarded nearly $30,000 in back pay!

By uniting, IHSS providers won a raise and ended a 7% cut to hours of care

Homecare workers have proven time and again that by standing together and fighting back, we win. Recently we have won several victories for homecare.

Ending a 7% cut to IHSS hoursOn July 1st, following a multi-year campaign by homecare workers and our allies, legislators restored our clients’ hours of care, temporarily ending cuts that had been in place since 2009. We continue to lobby lawmakers to ensure this cut is permanently ended.

Pay raise for Imperial County providers UDW members in Imperial County recently won their first pay increase in two years! Starting on January 1, 2016, providers will be paid $10.30 per hour. On July 1, 2016, hourly pay will be increased to $10.50. This victory was made possible by all the hard work and dedication of providers, who kept the pressure on the county to do the right thing.

Overtime pay In August, we came one step closer to finally securing overtime pay and other labor protections when a federal court ruled in favor of homecare workers. This case is expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, we are currently pressuring Governor Brown to move forward with implementing pay for overtime, wait time while at doctor’s appointments and travel time for IHSS providers.

We did it by standing together Our union unites thousands of homecare providers to make sure our voices are heard by lawmakers in Imperial County and in Sacramento. As we move forward, UDW members will continue to protect the IHSS program and advocate for the improvements IHSS providers and clients deserve.

At the same time, UDW fights for fairness for all. We know that homecare providers and our families cannot win justice as long as poverty wages, discrimination, and racism deny dignity to too many Americans.

I urge you to stand with us so that we can protect homecare and stand up for our communities! We look forward to working with you.

In unity,

Doug Moore, UDW Executive Director

UDW is part of the nationwide movement to secure $15 an hour for homecare workers.
