INTRODUCTION TO MAC PRE-INSULATED

UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

This catalog has been designed as your guide to the various pre-insulated MAC Systems for low voltage underground distribution cable connections. These systems have been engineered to provide reliability, economy and versatility of installation.

A superior, time proven method for connecting low voltage underground distribution cables in manholes and vaults is the use of a pre-fabricated cable jOint system. Proper use of these systems provides a reliable, orderly arrangement of equipment and cables in a manhole. Versatility for future connections can easily be provided by selecting those items designed for expansion capability.

Many years ago, acceptable standards and designs were established for underground connection systems. The obvious advantages of this standardization are interchangeability of the parts made by various manufacturers, stocking of components, availability of product and ease of training personnel. MAC underground connection systems meet these standards and interchangeability requirements.

DESIGN CRITERIA FOR MAC UNDERGROUND SYSTEMS Although each type of product shown in this section is designed for specific customer service preferences, they all have several common features:

MAC CRAB SYSTEM

Economical Versatile Reliable Simplified Installation

A pre-insulated, multiple connection system at a single junction point. This system utilizes a common copper bus bar with tubular cross members used to form outlets on both sides. Factory applied HYDUR-N Insulation eliminates extensive hand taping under field conditions. Designed for installation of conductors by use of standard compression tools and dies.

MULTI-MAC SYSTEM

Essentially the same as a crab except this system utilizes mechanical installation of the conductor in a cable receptacle. A feature of this system is the abilityto quickly and easily make additions or changes to any arrangement.

LIMITERS

Limiters are designed to prevent damage to cable insulation due to a fault current. MAC Limiters should be used on all secondary cable junction points. Choosing the desired limiter for the rated cable insulation can assure isolation of a fault on the secondary before service interruption or damage can occur to other sections of the system.

MULTI-MAC A pre-insulated copper bus bar which has threaded outlets that accept cables by use of a mechanical clamping system consisting of three elements: Cable Receptacle, Nut and Cone.

The hexagonal copper bus bar has holes at each outlet position which are drilled and tapped to accept the threaded stud of the desired cable receptacle. After the cable receptacle is threaded into the Multi-MAC, the stripped conductor is inserted first into the nut and then the tapered compression cone. The conductor is then inserted (with nut and cone) into the cable receptacle and secured by tightening the nut. The connection can then be made watertight by using Type USS insulating sleeve with minor taping at both ends or by completely taping the connection. Proper installation provides a completely watertight joint.

Versatility 1) Unused outlets can be left plugged for future addition of cables

2) Quick and easy removal of installed cables

3) System expansion can be accomplished by jOining several Multi-MACS together by use of Type UCC Coupler

4) Cable sizes can readily be increased by choosing the proper cable receptacle, cone and nut assembly for the size required

AMPACITY RATINGS

Multi-MACS are rated at 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 Ampere capacity. This is based on the maximum current carrying ability of the cross section of the insert. Each individual outlet carries the full rated current capacity of the conductor connected to it. Arrange the cables as shown below, to avoid exceeding the insert rating. This arrangement allows that maximum current flows directly across the insert.

INSULATION

Our molded, HYDUR-EP insulation has been engineered to eliminate taping of the crotch area and is sufficiently thick to prevent sagging caused by insert weight or fault conditions. For details of Insulation properties, refer to Page 17.

Insulated with HYDUR-N a super-aging, high performance natural rubber compound and neoprene coated for added resistance to corrosive elements, this time tested connector offers an economical means to connect several cables at a common junction. The cable outlets which are fabricated of high conductivity seamless copper tubing and hot tin dipped, are designed to be installed with existing popular compression tooling. The roll-back feature of the outlet insulation assures the need for minimum taping at the end of the cable insulation.

The unique insulating feature of the MAC No-Tape Crab type CN assures water tight jOints when used on standard 500 MCM rubber neoprene cable.

As shown in the diagram below, the extra overlap of free rubber beyond the end of the cable socket forms a water tight fit over the cable insulation. The No-Tape Crab is installed in the same manner as the standard type CN. Simply roll back the outlet sleeve past the indenting posi­tions, compress the cable into place and roll the outlet sleeve back to original position. For added assurance of a water tight connection, a coating of rubber cement may be applied to the cable insulation before the outlet insulation is rolled to final position.

The No-Tape is insulated with HYDUR-N and neoprene coated. Supplied with all outlets sealed except one. Seal is removed by cutting the end cap off with a knife.

Designed for multiple connection of bare neutral cables, these connectors are fabricated from high conductivity, seamless copper tubing and are hot tin coated. Installation is accomplished by use of existing popular compression tooling.

F pa-.----~--------r-;o," = ~ Type CNF fusible crab offers built-in limiter protection for the connection of either six or eight cables at one junction. Available for use with either 4/0 Str. or 500 MCM. These compact units which are insulated with HYDUR-N, pro­vide a completely insulated fusible joint when used in con­junction with the other accessories listed on the following pages. The interior copper elements are encased in a molded asbestos shell for arcing protection. In the case of the eight outlet crab, a length of 500 MCM copper cable is connected to the fusible elements within the jOint and molded into the unit.

DEAD END INSULATING SLEEVE TYPE CRN

Dead end insulating sleeve type CRN is used to cap the unused tubular outlets of the fusible crab connectors. Sim­ilar to type SRN, shown below, dead end cap holds the asbestos shell in place and can be secured in place by use 'of either rubber cement, tape or both. Molded of HYDUR-N.

TYPE SRN Insulating sleeve, type SRN, is used to hold the asbestos shells, type C, in place and to extend insulation of cable to fusible crab. Installation is accomplished by placing SRN over cable before cable is inserted into crab socket for compression. SRN, molded of HYDUR-N, can be secured in place by the use of rubber cement, tape or both.

Type CR 500C cable cap is used to insulate the unused cable portion of types CNF 10500 and CNF 50440. Molded , of HYDUR-N, cap is secured in place by a few laps of tape.

REFRACTORY SHELL TYPEC

When used in conjunction with fusible limiter crabs, these molded refractory shells prevent the deterioration of the cable insulation due to the heat which can be generated within the connection. The two halves of the shell are placed in position over the exposed indented cable outlets.

The network protector terminal type WPT is designed for use on network protectors manufactured by either General Electric Company or Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Fusible copper elements are encased in molded refractory shell and assembly is insulated with HYDUR-N.

The use of unique fabrication and insulating techniques make possible the connection of a wide range of conduc­tor sizes in special arrangements. The interior element of MAC type SSNT, which is for use on copper conductor, is fabricated of pure, high conductivity copper, while the interior element of MAC type SSNT-A is fabricated of pure aluminum. Both of these compression crab connectors are insulated with a combination of epoxy and rubber, and both have the MAC NO-TAPE feature. Because of the versatility of the manufacturing technique, unusual con­figurations and cable combinations are readily available. For details, contact factory.

A stud connector for the termi nation of one or more cables to the stud network protectors, distribution transformers or other equipment. Cables are installed by the use of stand~ ard indenting tools and the NO-TAPE feature of the rubber insulating sleeve minimizes taping at cable insulation. The body of the MAC NTS is epoxy insulated. NTS is available in a wide range of stud and cable sizes.

TYPE DNTS Similar to type NTS except cables are double stacked to allow for the entrance of more conductors.

Type LLA and LLAP limiter lug assemblies are complete units which include a fusible limiter lug, refractory shells and rubber insulating sleeve. The time-current character­istics of the fusible section, which are shown on page 37, are selected to prevent serious cable insulation damage. Type LLA is for use on rubber insulated cable. Type LLAP has an oil tight cable socket and is for use on paper insulated or other oil impregnated cable. Available in two standard mounting hole arrangements.*

The MAC limiter, type LL incorporates a fusible section as an integral part of the lug. It is manufactured under close tolerance so as to assure uniform fusing characteristics. The time-current characteristics of the fusible section are selected to prevent serious cable insulation damage. (see page 37 for limiter characteristics.) Available in two stan­dard mounting hole arrangements* (figure 1 and figure 2). Type LL is for use on rubber insulated cable. Type LLP has an oil tight cable socket and is for use on paper insulated or other oil impregnated cable.

MULTI-MAC LIMITER ASSEMBLY

This cable to Multi-MAC limiter assembly has fusing charac­teristics as shown on Page 37. Provides limiter protection for cables which terminate at a Multi-MAC. Cable end is installed in the tubular side provided and the solid end is installed in the Multi-MAC socket and nut assembly (Page 28).

De­signed to clear overloads that would otherwise damage cable insulation. Type LL-PS has extra long oil tight cable socket sometimes preferred by users of paper insulated cable. This one piece cable to cable limiter coupler is made of pure, high conductivity copper and hottin coated for added resistance to corrosion. Fusing characteristics are asshown on page 37. Type L is for use on rubber or thermoplastic cable and type L-P, whose cable sockets are sealed, is for use on paper insulated or other types of oil impregnated cable. Installation is accomplished by use of standard com­pression tooling.

Type LL-P long style limiter serves the same purpose as above. It has extra long oil tight cable sockets for those customers who prefer it for use on paper insulated cables.

In 1951, MAC Products, Inc., developed a line of limiters for use on 265/480 volt A.C. networks for the protection of cable and bus circuits supplying power to concentrated loads.

The new design of our cable-to-cable limiter, Type EPl, is encased in rubber and is suitable for submersible operation. Interruption of currents in excess of 100,000 amperes RMS., at 480 volts across the limiter, is accomplished in accordance with our recommendations. Water is prevented from entering into the limiter construction itself and into the connected cable.

Where short circuit protection is needed from one-half of a cycle to a longer indefinite period, these limiters have proved adequate and economical. Where quicker protec­tive interruption of the circuit is required, other circuit breaker devices are recommended.

MAC 265/480 volt A.C. limiters are of such construction that they possess the heat capacity to absorb and radiate heat generated from the limiter without any injury to their insulation or to the cable insulation under normal load conditions. The quartz filling with the aid of a special deionizer assures reasonably low level noise performance. All these devices have been tested at several values of current between the "float" value at about 1800 amperes and in excess of 100,000 amperes, RMS, at 480 volts across the limiter section. Voltage and current relationships were maintained in test to produce maximum disturbance and violence on arc interruption. Oscillograms were taken at most test currents of 3,000 amperes and greater.

Reproduced below are three typical oscillograms of cur­rent and voltage relations on interruption of currents indicated at 480 volts across MAC limiters. The voltage was maintained at 480 volts because it is possible that this voltage would exist momentarily across a limiter in actual operation under fault conditions. Therefore, since MAC 265/480 volt limiters repeatedly interrupted currents from

Mechanically and electrically secures cables into all MULTI-MAC connectors. The threaded stud is inserted into the MULTI-MAC outlet and secured by tightening the hex section. Cable is inserted into tubular end and com­pressed with standard tooling. Mac type MAR reducing adaptors may be used to accommodate cable sizes smaller than 4/ O.

TYPE PM All Multi-Macs are furnished with 25% of the number of outlets fitted with these HYDUR-EP Plugs. Provides a con­venient method of sealing unused outlets.

Fits over all Multi-Mac outlets and 0.0. of cable to provide a secure water-tight seal with a minimum of taping. To make up the diffen::nce between the 1.0. of the USS Sleeve and the 0.0. of the cable,simply wrap the cable with several laps of rubber tape. To provide a positive seal, it is also recommended that each end of the sleeve be taped exter­nally. HYDUR-EP Insulation is standard.

Used as both a fuse and a coupler, Type MFC offers a quick and inexpensive system of re-energizing cleared circuits. Can be used on rubber or paper insulated cables. Circuit protection may be regulated to various levels by using a link (Type MF) other than the one normally supplied.

Custom molded with Hydur-N, a high performance natural rubber compound and neoprene coated for added reisstance to corrosive elements, the CNA ser­ies of insulated aluminum crab joints satisfies the need for a reliable, fully insulated, multiple connector. The high conductivity all-aluminum internal element is of heavy duty design and all outlets are factory filled with Mactex inhibiting Compound. These compact crab joint connectors may be installed with standard compression tooling.

The MAR adapters are used to reduce the cable size of standard compression type connectors. Fabricated of soft, pure copper and hot tin coated for corrosion resistance, the MAR is designed for use with long double indent connec­tors. Installation is accomplished by inserting the adapter into the connector barrel, positioning the cable within the adapter, and compressing with standard tooling. For most sizes, the shape of MAR is as illustrated. However, some sizes are slightly different.
