Definition of Distributed Energy Storage (DES)A Distributed Energy Storage (DES) unit is a

packaged solution for storing energy for use at a later time. The energy is usually stored in batteries for specific energy demands or to effectively optimize cost. DES can store electrical energy and supply it to

designated loads as a primary or supplementary source. Moreover, it provides a stable and continuous

power supply regardless of the supply source status. Voltage and Frequency regulation can be

improved by using DES modules.DES contains inverters that convert the energy

into DC to store in the batteries and then transform the DC energy into AC energy, single or three phases at 50 or 60 Hertz. The energy converted into AC power can be

connected to the electrical network at medium (1 to 40.5 kV) or low voltage (< 1000 Volts).

Definition of Distributed Energy Storage (DES)ABB provides the necessary electrical, protective

and monitoring equipment along with the battery system to utilize the batteries safely with pre-designed, tested, required safety systems to meet ANSI, IEC and other international standards. This will guarantee a high level of energy continuity, and superior power quality in a safe and cost effective module.DES is available in several capacities with

individual modules up to 2 MW and an output voltage range of 120 volts to 40.5 KV at 50 or 60 Hertz, single or three phase system. The enclosure of the DES modules is engineered

to maintain the temperature of the equipment inside within the design limits as well as to provide protection. Different temperature classes and levels of protection are available according to the application and size. The enclosure protection of the DES modules is according to IP or NEMAtesting among others.

Definition of Distributed Energy Storage (DES)

ABB’s wide range of products is the right choice for several applications where all components are installed in a package.

ApplicationsDistributed Energy Storage (DES) has different applications in the distribution networks aiming to improve the quality and continuity of the power at optimal cost.

The main applications of the Distributed Energy Storage (DES) are:

Load Shifting.- defined as the practice of altering the pattern of energy use so that on-peak energy use is shifted to off-peak periods.

To reduce the electricity end user's energy cost, DES is charged with low priced energy and discharged when the energy prices are high.

Peak Shaving.- Peak shaving is related to Load Shifting. Both are part of demand management in which the ultimate goal is to increase the load factor. Peak shaving uses store energy to eliminate the short term peaks in the energy consumption pattern.

© ABB Group August 31, 2010 | Slide 6

ApplicationsBenefits of Demand Management :

a) Commercial and Industrial customers reduce their energy charges by improving their load factor

b) Utilities reduce the operational cost of generating power in peak periods (reducing the need for peaking units)

c) Investment in infrastructure is delayed because the system has flatter loads with smaller peaks.

ApplicationsRenewable Energy Capacity Firming.-

Allows use of an intermittent electric supply resource as a nearly constant power source. DES used for this application can help to increase the capacity factor of the Solar or Wind generation in the area. It can also be used to absorb the power generated during gusts in wind farms, which today are designed to waste that energy

ApplicationsDelay in line upgrades.-

DES modules that are placed electrically downstream from the congested portion of the transmission system can help to prevent overloads in the lines and delay potential line upgrades.

Power Quality.-

Power quality applications involve using DES to protect loads downstream against short-duration events that affect the quality of power delivered to the load.

Voltage Support / Energy storage with reactive power capability can provide voltage support and respond quickly to voltage control signals.

Frequency Regulation / DES is an attractive alternative for this application with its rapid response.

© ABB Group August 31, 2010 | Slide 9

ApplicationsOutage management.-

DES can provide power for short periods of time (usually less than an hour) to a network reducing or eliminating the effect of a temporary fault.
