ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS - Week 3 Lesson 1: Poetry Analysis Learning Objective: Students will be able to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. English Language Arts Standard:
• 7.RL.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.
________________________________________________________________________________ Directions: Read the poem. Identify the four highlighted vocabulary words. Use context clues to
come up with a definition for each vocabulary word. Write your definition next to each word below. In
addition, find two words within the poem that are unfamiliar to you.

• 7.RL.1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
• 7.W.1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
________________________________________________________________________________ Directions: Reflect on the poem and what we have learned about poetry this week. Use that
information to write a short essay that answers the prompt below.
The poet asks a number of questions throughout the poem, as if speaking directly to readers. What is
the purpose of these questions? Do they cause you to consider Icarus’s actions in a new light? Share
your views in a short essay. It should be a full, well thought out response with a main idea, supporting
evidence, and a conclusion.
• Think about the questions and views the poet presents.
• Identify evidence from the poem to support your views.
• Make sure your points are clear and convincing.

SCIENCE - Week 3 Lesson 2: Informational Writing Review Learning Objective: Students will use the previous lessons vocabulary and introductory reading passage focusing on plant cells and their functions to complete vocabulary review activities and sentence completion activities. Science Standards:
• 7.L2U1.12: Construct an explanation for how some plant cells convert light energy into food energy.
• 7.L1U1.9: Construct an explanation to demonstrate the relationship between major cell structures and cell functions (plant and animal).
ELA Standard: • 7.W.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts,

SOCIAL STUDIES - Week 3 Lesson 2: Pirates and Piracy Learning Objective: Students will be able to read with fluency and comprehend the central ideas by reading an exploratory text out loud and answering multiple choice questions. Social Studies/ELA “Anchor” Standards:
• (Social Studies) 6.SP1.2: Analyze connections among events and developments in various geographic and cultural contexts.
• (ELA) RH.6-8.2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
________________________________________________________________________________ Directions: Passage Reading and Fluency Building: Read the following sections: “Background Knowledge”
(Pg. 37) and “Passage Reading and Comprehension” (Pgs. 38-39) out loud and practice your fluency,
how well you read it (see bottom of pg. 39). Time how long it takes you to read it and if you made any
errors. - Cold timing: 1st time reading it out loud!
- Practice 1: go through and read it slowly, practice saying words you do not know.
- Practice 2: go through and read it confidently, practice any words you still struggle with!
- Hot timing: final time reading out loud. How well did you do? Do you do better than your first time?
Multiple Choice Questions: Read the following sections: “Background Knowledge” (Pg. 37) and
“Passage Reading and Comprehension” (Pgs. 38-39). Afterwards, answer the questions on
“comprehension Questions- Multiple Choice” section (Pg. 40).
