Zoom Meeting Scheduler within Canvas

Zoom FAQs at UNCW*

*You can schedule meetings within

Canvas just like you can on the Zoom

website.

Check out the “Using Zoom in

Canvas” section of the tutorial linked

above for instructions how to enable

the Zoom scheduler within your

Canvas course(s).

Then, use the Schedule a New

Meeting button to proceed with

setting up your one-time or recurring

meeting.

Scheduling your recurring or one-time Zoom meeting from within Canvas has the following benefits:

• The meeting automatically includes the students enrolled in your class as the participants

• Your students can easily access scheduled meetings from Canvas (i.e., they don’t need a web link or a separate meeting invite)

• You can start the meeting from within your Canvas course

A note about recording consent: Be

sure to inform your students if you

plan to record your meeting.

If you choose to record your Zoom

meeting, you will have two options:

Cloud and Local:

• If you select cloud recording,

your video will automatically

be stored in your Echo360

account

• If you select local recording,

your recording, will be saved

to your computer. You can

still upload a locally recorded

file to your Echo360 account

later if you want to share it

with students.

Don’t feel like all of your learning activities and content have to be self-generated! Expert interviews can bring a fresh perspective to a topic, module, or project. Use the Zoom Web portal to record to record the conversation with your guest as a 1-1 discussion. You can later edit it (if desired) and share it with students. Pre-record a lecture or other instructional content for students to watch on their own time (asynchronously)

Echo 360 Universal Capture Echo360 and Universal Capture

“Cheat Sheet” for faculty

“Delivering Lectures” resources on the Strategies page of the Keep Teaching website

Universal capture can record your

screen, your webcam (or both

simultaneously).

Videos you record using Universal

Capture are automatically added to

your Echo360 account.

While capturing, the preview of your

video in Universal Capture may

appear jumpy or to “lag”. However,

the video should play seamlessly

once it has finished processing

uploading and is viewed in your

Echo360 account.

Give yourself 15 seconds of “dead

air” at the beginning and end of your

video (and anywhere you make a

mistake) - this will make editing

easier if you choose to edit your

video!

Share a pre-recorded video with my students

Canvas Echo360 Integration How to embed Echo360 videos in

Canvas

Uploading videos to Echo360 and

sharing them in Canvas is preferable

to uploading a video file to Canvas

• Streaming videos will work

better than downloadable

files for students with poor

internet service

• Streaming videos stored in

Echo360 (unlimited storage)

won’t count against your

Canvas course or account

storage limits.

In addition to embedding videos in Canvas, you can also generate and share a link to any Echo360 video.

Get closed captioning or a transcript for my video

UNCW Closed Captioning Request Form

UNCW Closed Captioning Request Form

Closed captions or transcripts enhance learning and allow for a greater number of students with diverse learning needs to access a variety of media content. Closed captions or transcripts can be generated for any of your Echo360 videos. If you find an instructional video on YouTube or another video hosting platform and it lacks captions, you may still submit a request for a transcript.

Hold virtual office hours Zoom Meeting Scheduler within Canvas

Zoom FAQs at UNCW Waiting Rooms in Zoom

Virtual Office hours are a great way

for you to stay connected with your

students and provide them with an

opportunity to ask questions or get

feedback.

Consider using the Waiting Rooms feature to control when students enter – this is a great way to maintain the ability to have a “closed door” meeting where students can feel comfortable discussing any issues they are experiencing or any barriers to their learning.

Zoom FAQs at UNCW Creating a Registration Page

By scheduling a Zoom meeting and using the “Registration” feature of Zoom, you can create time slots and allow students or groups to sign up for the time that works best with their schedule(s). You can edit the start times and dates of recurring Zoom meetings in order to produce your desired time slots.

Send an announcement to my entire class

Canvas Announcements How do I add an announcement to a course?

Class announcements can:

• Set the stage for a new week/module

• Build instructor social presence in the class

• Remind students of an upcoming deadline

• Recap recent learning experiences

• Address issues or changes that affect the whole class

• Answer ad-hoc questions that would be of interest to everyone

Send a message to an individual student

Canvas Inbox What is the Inbox? How do I use the inbox as an instructor? Sending Messages in Canvas

Messages in Canvas work like email – you can choose to send a message to one student or multiple students. An advantage to using this tool is that it keeps all communication within Canvas (students don’t have to monitor multiple communication channels for class updates). Whether or not students will receive an email notification when you send them a message will depend on their notification settings.

Universal Capture is available to all UNCW faculty, staff, and students. Examples of student video projects include:

• Narrated slideshows (i.e., screencasts)

• Talking through a process or the creation of a product

• Discussing their research findings

• Showcasing a portfolio

Have my students share a recorded video with the class

Canvas Echo360 Integration How to embed Echo360 videos in

Canvas

Import an exam in Word or .txt format into my Canvas course.

Respondus 4.0 Getting started with Respondus Respondus Question Format

Have an existing quiz or exam but don’t want to individually enter all the items in Canvas? By formatting your assessment in Respondus format (simple text formatting - no coding knowledge required), you can use this software to import your quiz or exam to Canvas. Once the assessment has been imported, you can still customize the quiz options in Canvas.

Discourage students from visiting other websites or using other applications during an online test

Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB)

“Keep Teaching” Resources on Respondus LDB

The Respondus LDB locks down the testing environment in Canvas and discourages students from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications while the exam is in progress.

Deliver a proctored remote exam Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) And Options: Respondus Monitor

“Keep Teaching” Resources on Respondus LDB and Monitor

Respondus Monitor is an add-on to the Respondus LDB that Monitor uses video analytics technology to detect and deter cheating during remote proctored exams. Students must have a webcam to use Respondus Monitor. Bear in mind that remote proctored exams may not be for everyone – consider whether an alternative assessment may be more appropriate for your class and learning goals.

Have my students collaborate on a group project

Canvas Groups And/Or Canvas Collaborations

What are groups? Adding Group Sets in Canvas Creating a Group Discussion in Canvas What are collaborations?

The ability to work in groups is a valuable 21st century skill. Check out some Ideas for Great Group Work (courtesy of Duke’s Learning Innovation page) How do I do this in Canvas? In Canvas, you can split your students into groups to facilitate separate discussions and assignments. You can also use the Collaborations Feature to facilitate collaborative work on documents, spreadsheets, or slideshows. Canvas Collaborations is integrated with a student’s existing Office365 account so students don’t need to create a new account to participate.
