being giving proper compensation to Natives.

• Government cannot regulate religious behavior

• Friendly Natives bring him to Rhode Island area.

• Established religious freedom

• Disagrees with Quakers but provides them with shelter.

• Connecticut River- one of few fertile areas in NE.

• Dutch and English• Hartford- 1635

• Thomas Hooker leads group of Boston Puritans to area.

• 1639-Fundamental Orders- increased voting rights and allows more people to run for office.

• A modern constitution

• New Haven (Conn. Settlement)

• Goal- form an even stronger alliance between church and state.

• 1662- charter merges New Haven with more democratic settlements of Conn. Valley.

• Maine and New Hampshire very active in fishing.

• Mass Bay colony absorbs them.

• King is displease by Mass Bay greed

• 1679- New Hampshire is separated and made into a royal colony.

• Before arriving in Plymouth, epidemic sweeps area killing 75% of the population.

• The cleared land of the Natives attracted settlers.

• Natives cannot resists, basically forced to ally with settlers.

• Greed for land drives settlers further inland.• Results in Pequot War 1634-1638• English and Narragansett tribe vs. Pequot nation • Results- Pequot tribe almost extinct. • Starts four decades of “peace”

King Phillips War 1675-1676

• Metacom- intertribal unity is needed to defeat English

• 90% of Phillips men dead.

• 400 colonists killed, 12 villages completely destroyed

King Phillips War The Cause

• Prayer Towns- areas where Natives can voluntarily go to become “English” through conversion.

• Praying Indian- John Sassamon tell colonial officials about Metacom’s plan for attack.

• Before an investigation could occur, Sassamon is found dead.

King Phillips War- The Effects

• Will slow colonists westward march

• Completely kills the spirit of NE Natives.

• Down in numbers, dispirited and disbanded, they now only are sporadic threats to NE.

Seeds of Colonial Unity

• NE Confederation- Mass Bay Colony, Plymouth, Conn, and New Haven.

• Purpose- defend against Natives, French, and Dutch.• Each colony gets two votes.• Runaway servants and criminals under their

jurisdiction • Maine and RI left out- Why?

Benign Neglect

• Colonies are used to being self sufficient.

• Charles II restores order in England.

• Become more active in colonies.

• Outraged at Mass. Bay for not following orders.

• Gets back at Mass Bay.– 1. Gave rival Conn. A

sea to sea charter

– 2.Rhode Island gets a charter

– 3.1684- Bay Colony gets charter revoked.

• Created by Royal Authority

• First limited to NE, then NY and East/West Jersey

• Hoped to bolster colonial defense.

• Increased surveillance of NE shipping.

• Can no longer trade with countries outside the Crown.

• Colonial smuggling takes off.

COE, enforced unpopular navigation laws.

• Glorious (bloodless) Revolution- William III and Mary II take over.

• Dominion of NE crumbles, Andros shipped back.
