Disrupting Generational Poverty
NORTHWESTERN SETTLEMENT
In December 1891, a group of Northwestern University faculty and staff were inspired by the global university Settlement house movement and created our Settlement. Ever since then, we have continued to nurture, educate, and inspire
children and families with the mission of disrupting generational poverty.
Each year, we serve thousands of people who come through the doors of the original settlement house (built in 1901). Our organization partners with neighbors
to propel change in life circumstances and the community at large.
We are a focal point that is seen from across the city, serving close to 90% of the City of Chicago’s ZIP Codes.

and participate with us
opposed to geography.
The West Town community has
changed since our beginnings,
but our mission has not. We
have been at the corner of
Noble and Augusta since 1891.
Chicago has been our home for over
127 years, and we are proud to be a
community-based organization that
reaches across 51 ZIP Codes in the
city.
The original Settlement house is the heart of our
organization, providing a physical location for some of
our programs and also a sense of warmth, hope, and
inspiration. However, the Settlement concept, vision and
purpose lives at each of our locations.
At the corner of Noble and Augusta lies a very special place within the City of Chicago. We deliver on our mission of disrupting generational poverty by providing transformational opportunities for families, who partner with us, and change the trajectory of their lives.
Our work is based upon the foundation of relationships that extend over long periods of time. We see generations of families and board members giving testament to past successes and promises of the future. Everyone at the Settlement can share personal stories that demonstrate the enormous impact that occurs.
I look at former board member John, who grew up in the Settlement neighborhood. As a child he was inspired by one of our board members who took him to the hospital to get his tonsils out in the 1950s. John fondly remembers the canary yellow convertible that the board member drove, and how he slept on his own bed for the first time in the hospital. He thought to himself, “I want all of this someday.” Using the Settlement’s services, John went on to found his own business and then returned to give back to the organization who gave so much to him.
I see Hari, our Systems Administrator, who had a chance encounter with a current board member, Leon Oks, while driving limos at the airport as a new immigrant. Hari had a background in computers when he lived in Macedonia, and Leon took a chance to hire him in our IT department. Hari has worked at the Settlement for seven years now and is an integral part of our organization.
I see Summer, a member of our first graduating class at Rowe (2015), who is now a junior at Jones College Prep. She is helping her six-year-old sister (another Rowe scholar) learn Mandarin while maintaining outstanding grades and hoping to attend a university like MIT to become an engineer. She regularly comes back to the Settlement to volunteer, and we hope she continues to visit as often as she can.
For 127 years, our Settlement has nurtured, educated, and inspired thousands of our neighbors access better education, build awareness of opportunity and empowerment, to achieve personal success. When you walk through our Settlement, you too will see the mission that comes alive every day as over 2,500 neighbors walk through our doors. There are so many stories to share.
Every volunteer, every donor and every board member also plays an important role to inspire the next generation that comes through our doors. Our Settlement changes life outcomes, propelling social and economic mobility, and contributes to the well-being of our entire city.
Thank you for all your generosity and dedication, and for being a part of our Settlement community.
Sincerely,
This
Ron ManderschiedPresident, Northwestern Settlement

BOARD UPDATES
AUXILIARY BOARD UPDATESIn FY18, our organization said goodbye to one of our auxiliary boards and saw a merger of two others.
The Park Ridge Board was founded in 1989 by a group of friends led by Carol Par. Carol’s husband, John, grew up near the Settlement and used its services as a child. The board was the first new board in 40 years and grew into a board consisting of couples interested in the Settlement’s work. Their primary fundraiser was a BINGO tournament each year, which was preceded by the Cherub Brunch at Park Ridge Country Club.
The Chicago Young Professionals Board was founded in 2005. The board’s membership consisted of young professionals, many referred to the work of the Settlement by their parents, who often had been involved in the leadership of the Settlement themselves. The group had many rotating fundraisers throughout their tenure, most recently a Bags tournament in Allison Gym. The board merged with Evanston Woman’s Board to revitalize the membership of both boards and provide structure and energy to the new board.

Family CARES Center partnered with Eluna (formerly known as The Moyer Foundation) to start a Camp Mariposa at Northwestern Settlement’s House In The Wood. Camp Mariposa
is a free camp for children and youth who have been impacted by substance abuse in their families and aims to prevent addiction and mentor young people grappling with these issues. Camp Mariposa was offered three times at House In The Wood, and it is the first camp to serve Illinois based children, mostly from Chicago. Eluna gave the Settlement a generous grant to
AmeriCorps Project YES! celebrated 20 years of partnership with Northwestern Settlement. Often referred to as the “domestic PeaceCorps,” AmeriCorps started as the
Integrating Arts, Intergrading Education program in 1997 at the Settlement. Since then, over 400 volunteers have come through our doors putting on annual events such as the MLK Day Literacy Fair in January, Seeds of Service in May, and building an enchanted area in Vittum Theater for young children during Settlement Halloween. Volunteers also work within different
Rowe Elementary School invited Jahmal Cole, founder of My Block, My Hood, My City to be its first speaker in its speaker series. The series is designed to give inner-city students access to
opportunites they greatly deserve but rarely receive. Mr. Cole spoke about his personal story of growing up in Chicago and how it led to his passion for community and civic responsibility and the launch of his brand. His story resonated with many of Rowe’s scholars as he described his past circumstances and how it led him to success.
House In The Wood expanded its Outdoor Education Center offerings through a generous grant from IMC Charitable Foundation. The grant funds two or three day residencies for
Chicago Public Schools in Network 11, which serves children in the Englewood and Auburn Gresham neighborhoods on Chicago’s south side. Students come to House In The Wood and supplement their STEM education with outdoor education. IMC’s Lisa Wiersma was honored at the Settlement’s annual meeting in April 2018 for helping the Settlement secure this generous
Early Childhood Education began the practice of yoga within their classrooms. A donation of yoga mats from North Shore Board member and certified yoga instructor Linda O’Toole
proved to be very helpful to the kids in their practice. Each morning, the three to five year old classes spend about half an hour doing yoga. The yoga has not only helped center them before their busy days but also has expanded their vocabularies and allowed them to get some physical activity when the temperature drops. Teachers also enjoy practicing yoga with the students.
Food Pantry and Support Services served record numbers of families during the 2017 and 2018 holiday seasons. In the 2017 season, over 735 families particpated in Adopt-A-Family, food
basket distribution, and Toy Room. 2018 decided to raise the bar with an additional 90 families served, which means over 845 families were able to receive services through the same programming. Adopt A Family and Toy Room are able to provide presents for children and families while the food baskets provide the makings for a delicious holiday meal.
Adventure Stage Chicago started theming its seasons around the challenges of poverty in the 2017-18 season with the theme of literacy. The season featured two plays: Akeelah and the
Bee and an original, Roots in the Alley. 2018-19’s season is themed hunger in honor of Belna Reyes, the director of emergency services at the Settlement who passed in September 2017. There will be three plays: Robin Hood, The Stranger and The Shadow, and Fast Food. In addition, Trailblazers produced shows both seasons -- the 2018-19 season’s play will premiere in the summer.
After School Programs started a triathlon team with the help of former AmeriCorps Project YES! member and founder of Live Grit Gillian Fealy. The 2017 team consisted of
eight members and doubled in size for the 2018 year. Participants were able to compete in the Chicago Kids Triathlon in August, with the competitors swimming 100 meters, biking 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles), and running 1 kilometer (about 2/3 of a mile). Fealy hopes that participants use “the sport of triathlon to teach the character and grit that will allow these scholars to

EVANSTON WOMAN’S BOARD
The Evanston Woman’s Board was Northwestern Settlement’s first board, formed in 1909. Since then, the Evanston Woman’s Board has raised funds for the Settlement through their annual Dollar Letter appeal and mini-fundraisers such as a trivia night
and Burberry shopping event.
The Evanston Woman’s Board volunteers in multiple programs and has supported capital projects that maintain the historic,
Chicago landmark Settlement House building.
WINNETKA BOARDSince 1923, the Winnetka Board has provided financial and hands-on support to Northwestern Settlement. For 83 years, a fashion show was their primary fundraiser, but in 2019 will be transformed into a new foramt featuring a comedy show
from Second City, music, and great food.
Board members are involved in many programs, but they take a special interest in volunteering at Rowe Elementary
School.
NORTH SHORE BOARDThe North Shore Board of Northwestern Settlement was founded in 1936 to support House In The Wood camp in Delavan, WI. The board hosts the annual House In The Wood Gala, to make possible our summer camp and outdoor education programs for over 1,200 Chicago children each
year.
Board members volunteer during summer running activities at camp and annually sponsor a Mother’s Day gift room for

ADVENTURE STAGE AUXILIARY BOARD
The Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) Auxiliary Board, founded in 2014, is charged with strengthening the long term viability of ASC. Two areas of focus include audience development and fundraising. Each year the Auxiliary Board does a matching grant campaign in the spring and hosts their fundraising event, Winter Funderland, a night of games, bites and good

In Memoriam
Margaret “Peggy” Barr, Board Member
“Margaret Barr was one of Northwestern Settlement’s greatest cheerleaders, a strategist and an innovator. Peggy was passionate about helping the Settlement’s neighbors... Perhaps the endeavor dearest to her heart was founding the Settlement knitting group with Head Start parents. She taught many of them to knit, and knew she had done her job when she recognized that they now knew more than she did. But what she most cherished about the group was the opportunity to get to really know her neighbors, to mentor and become friends with them, reflecting the true embodiment of the Settlement’s mission.”
Holly Sunshine, Evanston Board & Board of Directors
The Settlement lost two very special members of our community in the past year, board member Peggy Barr and staff member Belna Reyes. We honor their
memories daily through the work we do.
The Settlement will continues to be a better place because of their legacy.
Belna Reyes, Director of Food Pantry & Support Services
“Belna’s positive impact continues to be felt throughout our Settlement community. Her efforts to educate and inspire women on topics of health, nutrition, and domestic violence still exist today through our partnership with Operation Muevete. Belna worked hard every day to make sure the food pantry was filled with nutritious foods and household goods and that every neighbor was met with a warm smile and a ‘we can help” attitude. We were so very fortunate to have had such a dedicated and inspiring member of the Settlement team.”Yasmin Rodriguez, Director of Emergency Services & AmeriCorps Project YES!
