Lord Thomson speaks at Century Club

Brig. Gen. Christopher Thomson, Lord Thom-son, was the speaker at the Century Club on Jan. 4.

Thomson, who was the former secretary of state for air for the British government, spoke on “Present Day Leaders of Men.”

He focused his remarks on Vladimir Lenin, Benito Mussolini and Ramsay MacDonald. He called Lenin and Mussolini “two triumphant dic-tators and autocrats.” MacDonald, former Brit-ish prime minister and leader of the Labor Party, was described by Thomson as “working for ide-als, not for show or headlines in the papers.”

Thomson’s appearance was planned by the club’s current events department. The current events department was chaired by Mrs. W.J. Chamberlin.

Vagrants given 6 months

Scranton police Magistrate James Arigoni started his first day on the job dealing with nine vagrants.

He gave the nine the same sentence — six

months in county jail. In his sentencing he told the group, “I don’t intend to see you here more than once. We are not going to have you running around the streets drunk and every time you come here you will get six months.”

Arigoni said he will still hold police court in the morning but he will be making changes to the traffic court schedule.
