1. MATCHES & LIGHTERS. Do not play with matchesor lighters. If you see anyone using matches or lightersinappropriately go tell a parent or responsible adult.

2. SMOKE DETECTORS. Every home should have smokedetectors. Make sure they work! Ask your parents to help youcheck and make sure the smoke detectors in your home areworking properly. Most re departments recommend changingbatteries twice a year in the fall when you set clocks back andin the spring when you set them forward.

3. HAZARD CHECK. Check your house for these re hazards:

ELECTRICAL: Make sure all electrical cords, outletsand power supplies are in good working order and outof the way of water and ammable items.

LAMPS: Never drape fabric over a lamp or leaveammable items near a light bulb.

FIREPLACE: If you have a replace make sure youhave a safety screen in place and that nothingammable is anywhere near the re area.

HEATERS & RADIATORS: Do not put anything ontop of a radiator or heater. Make sure all electricalradiators are unplugged when not in use.

STOVE, OVEN, TOASTER: Make sure these areturned OFF when no one is in the kitchen. Watch tomake sure ammable items are out of the way whenyour parents are cooking.

4. MAKE A PLAN. Work out a plan with your parents aboutwhere you should go and what you should all do in the event ofa re. You should have two ways to escape from every room incase one exit is blocked by re. And you should pick a locationoutside a neighbors house, a landmark, a nearby park aplace where everyone can meet up.

5. PRACTICE YOUR PLAN. Run through your plan makingsure everyone knows what to do. Test opening windows andscreens to make sure they will open if necessary. Also, practicemeeting up at your assigned location outside the house.

6. DO NOT HIDEGO OUTSIDE. Remember this veryimportant re safety tip. You may be scared, but never hide

during a re. Get outside and wait for your family at yourassigned spot.

7. FALL AND CRAWL. The best way to escape in the event ofa re is to stay low to the ground where there is less smoke in theair and crawl your way to safety.

8. STOP, DROP & ROLL. If your clothes catch on re, do notpanic, stop, drop and roll. Keep rolling until the re is out. Do notrun it will make the re spread.

9. STAY OUT. Never go back inside a burning building. Youmade a re safety plan with your family, now stick to it! Once youget to the designated meeting spot, stay there and wait for yourfamily to arrive.

10. KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. In the event of an emergencycall 911. Know your other emergency phone numbers. Memorizeat least two phone numbers to nearby people who can respondquickly if your family needs help.

Create smokejumper parachutes and test your skills!

SMOKEJUMPER

Print the following pages

Step 1: Gather a piece of plastic from a largefreezer bag or grocery bag. Use a paper plate tocreate a circular outline. Have an adult help you cutout the circle from the plastic.

Step 3: Place tape at 4 equal points along the edgeof the plastic. Punch a hole through each pieceof tape and plastic. Tie a piece of string througheach hole and secure with a knot. Tie all 4 of theloose ends of the string to the Smokejumpers (seedirections on the following pages).

Step 2: Have an adult help you cut out theparachute templates from the following pages.Make creases along the white lines, then unfold at.Glue a template to one side of the previously cutplastic and let dry.

Step 4: Toss the parachute into the air by holding atthe top and let the object drop. See how close youcan get to the target.
