Disney’s Minnie Mouse stars in “Electric Holiday” shown on Christie MicroTiles displays installed at Barneys New York, November 14, 2012 to January 3, 2013. When The Walt Disney Company and Barneys New York joined together to create the “Electric Holiday”window display they knew that bringing together two outstanding leaders in their respective fields could only lead to success. But they also knew that in order to ensure their creative visions were met, they would face some technical challenges that only a qualified, industry- leading digital display company could help them solve. With these challenges in mind, it’s no surprise they chose to collaborate with Christie ® to realize their vision. While complex in design, the idea was simple: transform the Barneys New York flagship store on Madison Avenue into a show-stopping display over the holiday season. Bringing together the worlds of high fashion and state-of-the-art animation, the two creative giants worked together to create a digitally-animated, original moving art short called “Electric Holiday.” The film was shown in various configurations and depths of field on Christie MicroTiles ® installed in the luxury retailer’s iconic window displays over the 2012 holiday season. “The [Christie] MicroTiles fit the bill perfectly. They are high resolution, they fit the space perfectly, they are such a modular object that we could create something unexpected that a normal, traditional display couldn’t give us,” explains Michael J. Kern, vice president, special events, The Walt Disney Company. “We were thrilled to work with the experts at Christie on Disney Electric Holiday Windows at Barneys New York. Disney and Barneys wanted to create a visually stunning window display unlike any other and the Christie MicroTiles — with their high resolution, shallow depth, virtually seamless canvas and true-to-life image quality — made that possible.” Lylle Breier SVP World Wide Special Events, Walt Disney Studios. The display windows at Barneys New York would need to undergo a huge transformation in order to see the concept through to reality. The team faced several challenges, including the shallow depth of the windows, which eliminated technology that required a lot of space. The need for nearly seamless digital displays would also have to be taken into account when choosing the right technology for the installation. Lightweight and shallow in depth, with a nearly invisible 1mm gap, Christie MicroTiles were the perfect choice. “Working with Christie is always a pleasure… in this case, the [Christie] MicroTiles seemed to be the perfect product for us, in that we had some limited space to work with, we had limited power, we had high-resolution requirements, and looking at the available products, Christie MicroTiles was really the best choice,” says Kern.

Christie’s Managed Services team provided technical consultation at every stage of the installation — from concept finalization to pre-staging to on-site set-up. The result is a stunning digital canvas composed of 425 Christie MicroTiles in a combination of portrait and landscape modes, generating the equivalent of a 600 square foot image spread across 2,275 square feet of building.

“We were thrilled to work with the experts at Christie on Disney Electric Holiday Windows at Barneys New York,” remarked Lylle Breier, SVP World Wide Special Events, Walt Disney Studios. “Disney and Barneys wanted to create a visually stunning window display unlike any other and the Christie MicroTiles — with their high resolution, shallow depth, virtually seamless canvas and true-to-life image quality — made that possible.”

Also providing his expertise was Emanuel Treeson from NYXdesign, who worked with

the teams to integrate the technology into the overall theme. Thanks to a spectacular artistic vision and the hard work from the installation teams, the Electric Holiday premiere was a huge success. Fans donned lit mouse ears and joined several special guests — including Sarah Jessica Parker, Minnie Mouse and Tinkerbell — to witness the world premiere of “Electric Holiday” at the Barneys New York on November 14, 2012. Guests of the premiere were the first to watch Disney characters Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Daisy Duck strut the runway in original designer clothes accompanied by an original score by Oscar® winning composer Michael Giacchino.

“I think one of the most exciting things about this project is it brings together three, very different, very creative companies. It’s the Disney company — the magic of the Disney company — then you have Barneys which is known for its wit and surprise, and then we have this extraordinary technology of Christie’s. So you’re putting together these three very dynamic companies and it is extraordinarily exciting to see what comes out of that,” explains Creative Director, Barneys New York, Dennis Freedman.

Following the premiere, the “Electric Holiday” display continued to amaze tourists and New Yorkers alike, throughout the holiday season. Says Freedman, “we have a film that never would’ve been made before, and we’re able to show that film, in our windows, in a way that we’ve never been able to show it before. So, on every level, this is a little bit of a breakthrough for all of us. And that breakthrough is our gift to our customer and to the city of New York.”
