    1Getting Started

    1 Getting Started

D isk Co py 6.1 is a utility appl ica tion that will mount disk images on your deskto p,

m a ke exa ct co pi es of flo p py disks from a disk image, co nve rt disk images from one

fo rmat to an o the r, and create a disk image from a mounted vol u me or in d ividua l

fold e r. Using Disk Scripts and Ap pl e Sc r i p t, it can be used to automate softwa r e

    in s t a l la tions and disk image man i p ula tio n.

System requirem ents and supported features

D isk Co py requi r es System Software 7.0.1 or later and is a fat bi n a r y for both

PowerPC and 68K-based Mac OS co m p a tible computers; A/UX and Ma cin to s h

Ap pl ica tion Enviro nment (MAE) are not su p p o rted. Disk Co py 6.1 fe a t u r es

ext e n sive Ba l loon Help and su p p o rts Drag and Drop (requi r es System Software 7.5

    or la t e r ), Ap pl e Sc r i p t, PlainTalk Text - to - Spe e ch, and Dig i Sign digital sig n a t u r es.

    Installing Disk Copy 6.1

D isk Co py can reside anywhere on your hard disk. It is reco m mended to place an

a l ias to it on the desktop for easy acc ess.

    D isk Co py 6.1 requir es the Obj e ct Su p p o rt Lib and Ap pl e Sc r i p t Lib ext e n sions on

Powe r P C - based computers (they are in cluded in a stan d a rd System Softwa r ein s t a l l ). These fi l es can be located in the Ext e n sions folder of the System Folder or

in the sa me folder as Disk Co py 6.1.

Remove any copies of Disk Image Mounter and Disk Copy 6.0.1

D isk Co py 6.1 provid es all the functionality of Disk Im age Mounter, a utility th a t

was in cluded with so me Powe r Book mo d els. Disk Co py 6.0.1 was rel e ased only to

    d evelo pers and Su p p o rt Professional Sol u tion Se r i es su b s c r ibe r s. To avoid

p ro bl e ms wo r k ing with disk images, it is import ant to remove all co pi es of both

D isk Im age Mounter and Disk Co py 6.0.1 and reb ui ld your desktop after in s t a l l ing

    D isk Co py 6.1.

While Disk Co py 6.1 also fe a t u r es the functionality of Disk Co py 4.2 and Flo p py

    2 Chapter 2

    About disk images

A disk image is a discrete el e ct ro n ic repres e n t a tion of an in d ividual vol u me; the

i m age co n t a ins all the in fo rm a tion to make an exa ct du plicate of the orig inal. A

co py made by dragg ing icons is not an exa ct co py; there may be invisible fi l es or

o ther i n fo rm a tion that is not co pied. When you use disk images, the vol u me as a

wh ole has been du pl icated co rr e ctly and co m pl e t ely.

Ma k ing disk images of flo p py disks is also a co nvenient and safe way to make

ba ckups of orig inal master disks from purch ased software packages and allows yo u

to el e ct ro n ica l ly dis t r ibute the contents of disks.

    Disk image formats

D isk Co py 6.1 can read and write three types of NDIF (New Disk Im age Fo rm a t )

d isk images, Disk Co py 4.2 disk images, as well as read other disk image fo rm a t s.

    2 Disk Copy 6.1 Basics

    Format Description

Read/Write Disk images in this format will allow you to make changes when mounted as if

Disk Copy 6.1 they were actual floppies or hard disks. Disk image size for this format can vary

(NDIF) from a minimum of 401K to a maximum of 2GB.

Read-Only Disk images in this format will allow you to open files and run applications whenDisk Copy 6.1 mounted, but not make any changes as if they were locked floppy disks or

(NDIF) CD-ROMs. Read-Only image format is similar to disk image formats you may

have worked with previously, except it truncates any empty space, resulting in

smaller disk images, and disk image size can vary from a minimum of 401K to a

maximum of 2GB. This format also includes a checksum.

Read-Only Disk images in this format function the same as Read-Only but in addition to

Compressed truncating any empty space, the Read-Only Compressed format compacts the

Disk Copy 6.1 data in the disk image, resulting in even smaller disk images. Disk Copy 6.1

(NDIF) provides extremely fast decompression so the only extra time necessary is

during compression. This format is a good choice for disk images that will be

downloaded. Disk image size for this format can vary from a minimum of 401K

to a maximum of 2GB and includes a checksum. Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic,

Portable, and PowerBook 100 computers can mount and make floppies from, but cannot create, a Read-Only Compressed format disk image.

Disk Copy 4.2 Disk images in this format work the same as the Read-Only format but are

compatible with the previous version of Disk Copy and many third party disk

image utilities. Disk Copy 4.2 format only supports 720K, 800K, and 1.4MB

floppy sizes. This format also includes a checksum.

    continues .

    Disk Copy 6.1 can

    read NDIF disk

    images created by

    Disk Copy 6.0.1, but

    NDIF disk images

    created by Disk Copy

    6.1 are not

    backwards

    compatible.

DOS and ProDOS- format ted disk image s

D isk Co py 6.1 requir es PC Exch ange to work with disk images that co n t a in DOS or

P ro D OS vol u mes, su ch as a PC drive co n t a iner or a DOS - fo rmatted flo p py.

To make DMF (a 1.7 MB PC fo rmat) flo p pi es, Disk Co py requi r es a Su pe r D r ive

and Mac OS 7.6, wh ich in cl u d es PC Exch ange ve r sion 2.1.1.

    Mounting disk image s

Instead of making flo p pi es from disk images to co py fi l es or install softwa r e, fo r

exa m pl e, Disk Co py 6.1 allows you to have disk images appear on the desktop as if

you had made a flo p py and in s e rted it in to the flo p py drive.

M o u n ting is also the only way to work with disk images that are la rger th an a

f lo p py. Wo r k ing with mounted disk images is as fast as wo r k ing with a hard drive

and you no lo nger need a stack of flo p pi es.

    Verific ation and auth entication

D isk Co py 6.1 su p p o rts two me thods to ensure the in t egrity of disk images :

    che cksu ms and digital sig n a t u r es.

A che cksum is a number derived from lo o k ing at the data that makes up the disk

i m age. It is stored in the disk image itsel f. If any ch anges are made to the disk

i m age, the che cksum will ch ange as well. When Disk Co py 6.1 beg ins to work with

a disk image, it can optio n a l ly verify that che cksum has not ch anged to ensure no

data co rru p tion or alteration has occ u rr e d .

    D igital sig n a t u r es are used to approve, or sig n , fi l es to assure its authe n tici t y.

D ig i Sign software is part of, but does not requir e, Ap pl es PowerTalk softwa r e.

The che cksum allows Disk C o py 6.1 to verify the contents of a disk image, wh i l e

the signature allows authe n tica tion of the source of the disk image.

    3Disk Copy 6 .1 Basics

    Format Description

PC Drive Disk Copy 6.1 will mount as read/write, but does not create disk images in this

Container format. Container files are created by Apples PC Compatibility software, which

works only on DOS-Compatible Mac OS computers.

DART Disk Copy 6.1 will read, mount, and convert from, but does not create disk images

in this format. DART is an older Apple utility for working with disk images which

    creates compressed disk images.

ShrinkWrap Disk Copy 6.1 will read, mount, and convert from, but does not create disk images

Floppy in this format. ShrinkWrap versions 2.1 and earlier were released as shareware.

ShrinkWrap floppy disk images are nearly identical to Disk Copy 4.2 format.

ShrinkWrap Disk Copy 6.1 will read, mount, and convert from, but does not create disk images

Volume in this format. ShrinkWrap versions 2.1 and earlier were released as shareware.

ShrinkWrap volume disk images are not floppy size and do not have a checksum.
