For this event, HORN is adopting the slogan „Innovative machining technologies“ to showcase the latest trends and developments in the field of machining. All three days are designed to provide a host of opportunities to find out more about boosting the efficiency and competitiveness of your production work using advanced processes and tool systems. Meanwhile, technical presentations and practical demonstrations packed with infor-mation will cover a wide range of topics.

What‘s more, HORN Technology Days will provide the perfect opportunity to not only discuss technical know-how and experience with others, but also enhance it in practical ways. And there will be the chance to get a glimpse of HORN‘s experts and technologies in action.

Just like our 2013 event, this year we‘re thro-wing open the doors of our production areas and welcoming our guests inside. Delegates can also expect an exhibition with fascinating items on show, plus information about inno-vations and trends in tool technology.

Our very first HORN Careers Day is also set to take place on 19th June 2015. Aimed at customers, schools, pupils, universities and students, it is designed to provide more information about the opportunities that our HORN Academy has to offer. Over two presentations, the HORN Academy will provide an insight into its additional qualification to the level of industrial specialist for cutting tools, plus the course it launched in 2013 in the field of mechanical engineering with a focus on cutting tool technology.

1PRESENTATION IGROOVING AND PARTING OFF STAINLESS MATERIALS

Processing stainless materials places significant demands on the tool with regard to work hardening and potential for plastic de-formation. Selecting the right carbide grade and geometry plays a critical role. Owing to its enhanced mechanical stability, machining the material presents a challenge due to heat generation, cutting forces and chip control. In this presentation, you will find out how to counteract wear mechanisms such as flank wear and what the be-nefits of selecting the right tool, particularly internally cooled tools, are with respect to machining.

SPEAKER: CHRISTIAN STARK

State-of-the-art series production of small parts places major challenges on the tools involved. Due to the restricted space available in the work area of Swiss-type lathes, the tooling needs to offer small compact design, while satisfying the high quality requirements of mass production processes. Tool systems from HORN are a prime example of how this problem is tackled.

4PRESENTATION IVTROCHOIDAL HARD MILLING WITH COATED SOLID CARBIDE MILLERS

The requirements placed on precision tools as a technology carrier have increased considerably over the last few years. In addition to maximum productivity, other factors are increasingly playing a crucial role when it comes to using them successfully. Virtual pro-duction processes including data availability and an ever-changing variety of materials that require machining mean that the services provided by tool manufacturers have to be constantly adapted to suit machine requirements. This presentation aims to highlight a selection of the challenges presented by the machining processes of the future.

Trochoidal milling involves routing the milling tool highly dynami-cally on a trochoidal path. The maximum pressure angle is defined subject to the material. This means that the time that the milling cutter is engaged is very short and the thermal load is significant-ly reduced. Small cutting widths and therefore smaller cutting forces allow high axial cutting depths, which en-able large machining volumes to be achieved. This technical presentation will demonstrate the benefits of this milling method and provide important background information on the topics of wear, cutting data and applications.

SPEAKER: JÜRGEN SCHMID

Tangential milling technology is a key addition to the area of rota-ting tools. In this technical presentation you will get an insight into our standard range and the results that we have already achieved. Key topics include the material removal rate, options for special so-lutions and the important combination of state-of-the-art machines and high-performance tools.

5PRESENTATION VMILLING AND SLOTTING CUT-TERS – NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH-PRECISION PRODUCTION

When it comes to separating the workpiece with high cutting valu-es, milling and slotting cutters are the tools to use. They can be used in many ways and offer optimum results, even with the most varied of materials. The benefits are their high repeat accuracy and how easy it is to change the screwed-in indexable inserts. What‘s

more, the indexable inserts can be adapted to the material with respect to their carbide grade and chip shape geometry. This pre-sentation will show you how using the right insert will enable you to achieve a reliable and cost-efficient machining process.

SPEAKER: JOACHIM HORNUNG

Work processes can often be structured more economically and efficiently by using a special tool and there is a wide range of ways to optimise these. For example, several machining operations can be carried out, without the need for long tooling times or tool ch-anges. This presentation will demonstrate both the benefits and applications of special moulding tools as well as tool solutions that have already been successfully implemented from small-scale to large-scale processes.

PRESENTATION VIIIWEAR PARTS – REDUCING COSTS THROUGH THE USE OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE CARBIDE RODS

SPEAKER: MICHAEL KAST

Durable and high-performance wear parts form the focus of this presentation. A constantly optimised manufacturing process and extensive new developments are prerequisites for high quali-ty and efficiently reducing costs. Whether fully or raw sintered round rods, flat or square rods, the options and applications are extremely varied. High-quality carbide blanks and rods form the foundation for guaranteeing a high-performance finished product.

Practice-orientated training and advanced training that is kept up to date and spans the employee‘s entire career represents an important investment in the company‘s competitiveness and sustainability for every employer. Today, as in the past, professional and personal training is a particularly important buil-ding block for securing the company‘s need for skilled employees. Since May 2012, Paul Horn GmbH has been offering a broad-based portfolio of training measures and qualifi cations in its own academy.

The focus and key topics of all training and additional qualifi cations are ori-entated towards the operational needs and the economic development trends with respect to the manufacture of carbide machining tools.

As part of the fi rst HORN Careers Day, the HORN Academy is presenting the following key topics: Training at HORN, additional qualifi cation as industrial specialist for cutting tools, and the cutting tools technology specialism which was launched in 2013 as part of the mechanical engineering degree pro-gramme.

Come and get to know our cooperation partners at the Cutting Tool Techno-logy Competence Centre, fi nd out about the training involved in becoming an industrial mechanic and come and talk to our training managers and practical trainers.

Find out about the following topics:Training at HORN (information program for teachers and pupils)Studying at HORN (information program for prospective students and universities)Advanced training at HORN (information training for skilled workers & companies) We look forward to welcoming you in Tübingen on 19th June 2015.

The HORN Careers Days give you the opportunity to talk to us about training and advanced training as well as to establish links with schools and other companies.

Today, as in the past, training and advanced training is an import-ant and central topic for employees and employers. The skills and motivation that employees have are vital for ensuring long-term success. It is therefore extremely important to develop customised courses and to structure them based on operational requirements. In this presentation, we will introduce you to two successful training models. The industrial specialist for cutting tools and the new me-chanical engineering dual study programme focusing on production technology and, more specifi cally, tool cutting technology.
