INTRODUCTION

What Is The Definition Of Success For A Nursing Business?

Thank you for requesting your copy of this important book. It frustrates and saddens me

to see so many nursing businesses suffer and not live up to their potential.

Especially given the fact that the need for compassionate and quality nursing services

grows each year, mostly led by an aging population. There’s plenty of growing demand

and need for each nursing service to prosper and provide a wonderful lifestyle for its

owners.

This should be a terrific business. Make great money and live a fantastic life by helping

people in need.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Even with rapidly growing needs in the market many

nursing businesses struggle. Some close their doors and go out of business.

Because I believe every nursing owner should live a comfortable and successful life by

providing a much-needed service to their clients, I’ve dedicated my career to helping

nursing company owners prosper the right way.

Therefore, this book focuses on how to do it. How to increase your profits, improve the

dependable success of any sized nursing business, and it just may be the most

important thing you’ve read all year!

But, as many nursing professionals might find surprising, I won’t be talking about:

• Nursing skills,

• Technical,

• Health care delivery, or

• Other topics usually discussed in ongoing training and updates for our

profession.

My name is Lily Carrier. I am the founder of Nursing Career Consultants, a nursing

business success consulting and training firm. I am also an Executive MBA Candidate of Michigan Ross Business School.

The Curse Most Compassionate, Skilled, And High-Quality Nursing Companies Suffer From

So, you may wonder why I am not talking about technical expertise and health care

delivery as ways to turbo-charge your bottom line.

Well, that’s for good reasons:

There is so much great, state-of-the-art training and information on these topics,

available from many trustworthy sources…I didn’t want to cover topics you can

readily find the facts you need to stay updated in so many excellent places.

But, what I am going to review with you, are promotional and conversion

techniques that from my experience, many nursing companies don’t know about,

or don’t take advantage of.

Because from my viewpoint, the most noticeable and glaring difference between

the biggest, most successful companies…and the smaller, less successful

businesses is that the sustainable operations are much better at marketing,

promoting, attracting joint venture partners and consistently attracting qualified

end user clients!

I truly believe it’s the reality (and a curse that afflicts many nursing businesses)

that cannot be denied:

EVEN THE MOST COMPETENT, HIGHEST QUALITY NURSING CARE

PROFESSIONAL WILL NOT LIKELY REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL…

Being competent or even excellent at the mechanics and systems of delivering care…in

and of itself…does not usually correlate with reaching the success goals you desire…

WITHOUT BEING EXPERTS AT MARKETING AND PROMOTING YOUR COMPANY

EFFICIENTLY, EFFECTIVELY, AND PROFITABLY!

Am I saying you should not deliver services of the highest quality, at the most

compassionate level? No. Not at all. Everyone has a profound responsibility to deliver

the highest level of proper care in the proper manner.

Please understand that I have seen that almost all nursing companies are totally

experience.

But what’s interesting, regularly missed…is my strong belief based on empirical

evidence that if delivering the highest quality services would in and of itself propel your

company to the heights in your dreams…every company would be at the top of the

mountain.

A myth I was taught in corporate environments is the old saw:

“The world will beat a path to your door if you build a better mousetrap.” …is

unfortunately not how reality works in most cases. Especially in the nursing

market.

What All Successful Nursing Businesses Have in Common

What is the more correct statement?

“The best marketers, the most effective promotional communicators, the

organizations that attract consistent interest from the right prospects and

partners…are the ones that usually have the easiest times meeting their goals

with minimum stress.”

When you are really strong at professional, ethical and compliant marketing and

promoting…you will likely have a very strong and stable business. I have found a high

level of correlation between these factors.

Why is this the case? Well, the most successful client and partner attraction companies

usually are the most successful at attracting revenue and net income.

But it’s not just income I’m referring to. I’m talking about income you can COUNT ON,

income that is generated dependably, predictably…and steadily.

So instead of not really being certain what your cash flow is going to be, or what growth

to expect, many nursing businesses start from scratch most days – desperately needing

to find new sources of revenue, new clients, new partners…expending lots of needless

time, energy and anxiety.

So yes, I see many nursing companies experience too much stress and frustration

caused by being so good at what they do…yet not making the kind of steady,

predictable income they deserve.

It’s YOUR choice how your company expands, grows and becomes a solid business

you can count on!

You can choose to keep doing what you’re doing now or change what you’re doing.

The key is to get a steady, dependable, ongoing, never-ending flow of these high

probability prospects to come to you on their own, to initiate the process, and YOU

cherry pick the best clients and joint venture partners to work with.

An important aspect to my discoveries in this area of company promotion and client

attraction is that you want to implement ways to keep the inbound flow of high quality

prospect traffic coming in in a SYSTEMATIC manner, so you can reduce or minimize

the cash flow highs and lows.

For example, you can receive referrals from being an excellent provider…but again, do

we want occasional and haphazard receipt of referrals…or do we want a more steady

and reliable flow of referrals?

If the steady, predictable flow idea sounds more appealing, it’s because it is more

fun to have referrals contact you in a SYSTEMATIC approach.

Which means that implementing proactive referral SYSTEMS that operate on a

consistent basis, increasing the chances of referrals many times over hoping and

wishing they will come in.

So, my job is to assist my clients by working to minimize the uneven,

unpredictable nature of occasionally getting referrals.

I fully understand the stress; how much worry can come from having to go through the

irregular roller coaster cash flow ride.

Combining marketing, promotional and referral SYSTEMS through a planned approach

is a proven answer to the erratic cash flow worries and the solution to the dependable

growth you’d like to achieve.

Four Marketing Mistakes Nursing Companies Make When Trying To Grow

Let’s discuss some common mistakes nursing companies make when trying to install

the right growth methods, how to avoid them…and what to consider doing instead as

the way to introduce these concepts to you.

Marketing Mistake #1 Sounding Like Everyone Else.

“Highest Levels Of Trust, Integrity And Skill”

• “In Business Since 1996”

• “Certified”

• “Qualified For Medicare And Medicaid”

• “We Truly Care About Your Family’s Care”

• “Gentle, Loving Care From Top Nursing Professionals”

Any of this sound familiar? Any of this sound like your slogans or marketing messages?

I’ll bet it does, because these types of attempts at communication, or very similar

sounding tag lines are used by virtually everyone in this profession.

In fact, if I gave you brochures, or showed you Home pages from websites of virtually

any nursing company…and replaced one name/logo with another…no one would notice

except possibly the owners of the companies. (Possibly not even them.)

So, what happens to prospective clients, prospective referral sources such as a clinics

or rehab centers, financial and legal professionals, families of clients, etc., anyone who

could be seeking out your nursing services…when they do some research and see that

virtually every company looks, sounds and feels the same?

How do they make a decision who to follow up with or contact? How can they tell who

really may be the “best” to consult with when everyone appears basically identical from

THEIR perception?

Answer: They can’t.

So, they use whatever methods they have available to them to make a decision on who

to contact or contract with…which are often the wrong methods: (e.g. the smoothest

talker, unrealistic promises, and so on.)

Here’s some quick doses of reality:

Anything you offer offline or online that “brags” about your licenses or

designations, your company, how many patients you serve, how long you’ve

been in business, how many offices or nurses you have, and so on…mostly falls

on very dis-interested ears.

• Here’s a wake-up call: No one outside the profession cares about the

technical/specifications/details YOU think are important to laypeople or even

other health care professionals. What’s important to YOU, is usually not what’s

important to people who can hire or refer clients to your company.

And as hard as this may be to accept by some people, their perception and yours

could be somewhat very different. Most our nursing care professionals assume

that people think like them.

One of the toughest skills to attain…is the ability to step outside your perception dome

and think like other people do!

What all this discussion about your messaging really leads to is: Do you have a really

great answer to this question?

“Why should I do business with YOU, above and beyond all the other choices I

have, including your competitors…or doing nothing at all?”

So, do you have a great (or even any) answer to this question?

Please think about this. What is your response to this hidden objection prospects,

potential partners and anyone else you may wish to do business with all think and

wonder about…but may not vocalize?

What I’m talking about is a concept called a, “Unique Selling Proposition” (USP).

If your answer is any of the examples I just mentioned, you should consider pondering

this issue as it may be one of the most important decisions you make for your business.

If you have an attention-grabbing answer to this question…you can outpace the

competition in ways you can’t do in other ways.

The key concept is “UNIQUE”. Whatever your answer is, is it truly UNIQUE…or does it

make your company sound like everyone else?

Do the answers about how long you’ve been in business, how many clients you have,

how much you care…etc…come across as truly unique?

Are they unique when almost all nursing companies say almost the same things when

presenting their messaging? One or more truly interesting and appealing USP’s should

be a core concept in your marketing planning.

Marketing Mistake #2 The ONLY Radio Station That Matters: WIIFM. (What’s In It

For Me?)

Here’s another hard dose of promotional reality I have come to accept even though I

don’t necessarily like it very much:

The vast majority of people care mostly or only about: THEMSELVES.

Seriously. We know that all humans are SUPPOSED to care about others more than

themselves…but that is a falsehood no one wants to admit in public.

Yes, of course some people, especially folks in our profession…DO care more about

clients and patients than themselves. Altruism is a real. Compassion and empathy are

real.

With that said not all people possess these kindness-oriented characteristics of being a

human as we would wish. I have found that as I, and my clients become better and

better at thinking how others think…our results and rewards keep getting better and

better!

The radio station most people listen to is: WIIFM. (What’s In It For Me?)

I know this is not what we’d like to talk about, but reality is reality. This station is the one

that most people are tuned into most of the time. And yes, it is true for the CEO of a

large health care company…as well as for the janitor.

Business to business, business to consumer…any marketer to any potential client will

be well served to understand this immutable law of human nature…no matter how much

we may not like it.

Human nature is human nature and can’t be altered or modified because we’d like the

world to be different, more outward thinking than inward thinking. People’s nature is

hardwired from our ancestors…and hasn’t, nor won’t change.

Studies have shown that approximately 90% of people make decisions with their

emotions…and rationalize the emotional choices with logic…AFTER they make the

decision!

And these laws of human behavior do not just apply to end consumers. No.

Business people at any level, initially make their decisions out of emotions…then are

followed by the logic most people think business people use to base their entire

decisions on.

This discovery also surprised me. The more I studied this amazing phenomenon and

changed the way I made my own choices, as well as assisting in the choices of nursing

company clients…I finally came to accept this counter-intuitive information as reality.

Please think about this: If you can agree that the ability to see the world through other

people’s eyes is very important to success…you may also understand that promotions

and marketing that brags, boasts about how great your company is…usually end up

doomed to fail.

If you mostly talk about THEM, the real prospects who are ALREADY qualified,

interested and motivated before you meet them, you can attain far more business get

more clients and business than you’ve ever seen before.

Marketing Mistake #3 Misunderstanding The Need To Mix Proactive (Direct),

Trackable Marketing To Grow Your Business Now…Improving Your Brand/Image

Recognition At The Same Time:

Of course, your brand, your image, your prestige are all very important to your long-term

success. Please understand I am in no way suggesting you do or say anything that

would ever infringe on the stature your company has, or will build, through possessing a

stellar reputation.

Again, there are so many ad agencies, books and business school courses on brand

building, name recognition…that I won’t spend time today talking about these

issues…other than to say to achieve results from these image efforts:

Take long periods of time

• Cost a lot of money

• Can’t be measured with much, if any accuracy.

What I do want to discuss is how incorporating more proactive marketing activities that

are as close to 100% trackable as possible into your client acquisition mix.

The most successful nursing companies implement long term reputation/image/brand

building…along with direct promotions that can be tested and tracked!

When I ask my clients and other owners of nursing businesses how much they spend

on total advertising, and how much of that budget is devoted to trackable direct results

marketing compared to low or non-trackable brand building…I often get similar type of

answers:

We don’t know.

We’re not exactly sure.

We’re sure we’re wasting half our ad budget…we just don’t know which half.

We can track some of our promotions, but not all…and we’re not 100% certain

We don’t use any trackable promotions; we focus on brand building.

Again, I am not saying anything negative about pure brand/image building…but I would

like to stress the most important reason for adding or increasing the measurable forms

of marketing:

Knowing for SURE what marketing to expand…and maybe more important…knowing

for SURE what marketing to end immediately!

When you design your marketing plans to include as much trackable promotions as

possible…you can implement scientifically oriented TESTING.

TESTING is one of the greatest profit-making opportunities nursing companies can

implement into your promotional activities to maximize positive results…and minimize

poor results.

Many of my clients and associations in our profession have told me that they do not

know how much, if any of their promotional budget allows for making “yay or nay”

decisions on empirical evidence instead of guesses…either educated or not.

Good news! You can design and create testing parameters to do live testing in the real

world!

My experience is that very few nursing companies do enough scientific testing of

marketing and business attraction undertakings …and/or not track ROI properly. Which

can lead to frustration, confusion and wasted money/time/effort.

In my opinion, every promotion should carry its weight as far proving a positive ROI. If

promotions are losing money or not accomplishing your goals, they shouldn’t be allowed

to keep running. Accountability applies to all aspects of your company…especially for

promotional activities.

Marketing Mistake #4 Not Knowing All Your Options – Too Much Inside The Box

Thinking:

Another thing I’ve discovered is that many of my clients make great decisions from their

base of knowledge…but don’t always know all the options and choices they have to pick

from.

A big advantage I have is that I am always working with nursing businesses of all

stripes…and see everything that everyone is doing.

I have seen virtually all the typical actions business owners in our profession attempt to

grow/build their companies. I would say most of them, do most of the same things…that

do not normally allow them to realize their objectives.

It’s quite common for one nursing company to see what other companies do and copy

or emulate these tactics for themselves…usually not knowing if they actually work or

not.

This “copy-cat” phenomenon could be trouble for many companies. People see what

competitors or related companies do and do similar things without the benefit of

knowledge of any empirical evidence of successful ROI.

I prefer to look for and find successful out-of-the-box techniques both from within our

profession, and from outside our profession as well!

If you only look at your competitors inside our profession, you may end up making the

same marketing mistakes they make!
