TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH OUR BUSINESS
From exploring the world’s deepest oceans, to our highly advanced processing facilities, right through to the petrol station you pull up to in your car and the gas that heats your home, Shell’s business is vast and diverse – just like the opportunities we can offer you.
7 8
PEARL IN THE DESERT
Shell has been exploring alternative sources of energy for many years. Natural gas burns 50% cleaner than other fossil fuels, and at our Pearl GTL project in Qatar we have built the world’s largest gas-to-liquids plant. Here, we’re creating synthetic oil products, including cleaner-burning diesel and oils for advanced lubricants.
The plant itself is a major technical and commercial achievement. Across the GTL process, Shell has over 3,500 patents. Not only that, a by-product of the GTL process is water, which we recycle to avoid the need for fresh supplies – crucial in a country where every drop of water counts.
Achievements on this scale are only possible because of the passion and dedication of Shell people, across every discipline. On our Graduate Programme, you’ll join teams with a depth of experience and expertise that will give you an outstanding start to your career.
A PASSION FOR PERFORMANCE
For millions of people around the world, Shell is – first and foremost – the brand they trust to keep them moving. All the way from the oil well to the petrol pump, we apply a unique combination of technical and commercial excellence to delivering everything from fuels and oils to apps and retail experiences.
Right at the cutting edge is the Shell team that works in collaboration with Scuderia Ferrari on a technical partnership that spans over more than 60 years. Every race weekend, Shell scientists work in the Scuderia Ferrari paddock to carry out over 70 tests on Shell race fuel and oil.
The impact we make on performance in this highly specialised field then feeds into our consumer fuels and oils. On our Graduate Programme, you will discover that Shell’s passion for performance runs through everything we do.
IN FORMULA ONE YOU ARE ALWAYS PUSHING FOR THAT LITTLE BIT OF EXTRA PERFORMANCE AND THAT’S A PHILOSOPHY WE ALSO APPLY TO OUR ROADGOING PRODUCTS. AT SHELL, WE NEVER BELIEVE OUR JOB IS DONE – WE ALWAYS LOOK TO IMPROVE.

COMMERCIAL BUSINESS CAREERSWhether you aspire to be a world-class business leader or highly-trained commercial specialist, the Commercial Business stream of our Graduate Programme is where it all starts. From upstream roles, where you’ll be involved in the search for and production of oil and gas, to downstream roles, turning these resources into marketable products, you will embark on a career full of exciting challenges and opportunities, working alongside some of the sharpest commercial minds in the business.
WHAT YOU COULD DO
Downstream Commercial
Careers in Downstream Commercial combine the drive for profitable growth with a firm focus on maintaining alternative energy solutions. You’ll be responsible for strengthening Shell’s corporate reputation, building brand awareness and supporting business goals. Within roles such as Sales and Marketing, you’ll see how Shell builds relationships with customers and interacts with local and global markets. You’ll also be part of an organisation that builds long lasting partnerships, like our 60-year relationship with Ferrari.
Downstream Supply Chain
In a Downstream Supply Chain role you could get involved in activities like market analysis, supporting contract negotiations and supply chain optimisation, while in an Operations role, you’ll be helping distribute our products to retail and commercial customers through our global logistics network. Whatever your job, you’ll help shape the way Shell maximises efficiency and profits across all supply channels.
Trading
With a trading volume of about 13 million barrels of oil equivalent per day this fast-paced business offers you the chance to immerse yourself in the dynamic and competitive world of buying and selling in the energy industry. The business has a global coverage: Upstream International and Upstream Americas. Commercial supports the exploration for oil and gas, the development of projects, the management of existing assets and the liquified natural gas business.
WHAT IT’S LIKE
Sophie is on her first rotation in the Oil Trading Market Risk team. Here, her key responsibility is to manage the possibility of financial loss caused by market price movements.
“On a daily basis, I identify and investigate the trading activity that can potentially create exceptional market risk exposure, and analyse the overall market risks that our Global Trading Network is exposed to. I have had to acquire an in-depth understanding about crude oil trading quickly and to enhance the management of market risk exposure by improving risk measurement models.
“One of my most significant achievements so far was participating in the management of a major shipping project. I managed to deliver all results on time and eventually helped drive the project to a successful completion.
“The best aspect of working at Shell is the variety of opportunities available. There are many overseas assignments and we rotate roles every three to four years, exposing us to different lines of business and cultures. We’re encouraged to explore what we want to do and to consciously develop our careers.”

WHAT IT’S LIKE
Yongqin Du joined Shell in 2010 after completing his doctorate at Manchester Business School. He is now an IT Project Manager for Mobile Applications.
“I joined the Shell Graduate Programme for IT to develop my knowledge of the technical and management sides of implementing IT systems.
“Despite the lure of IT companies, I joined Shell because I’d heard the graduate programme was a three-year rotation with opportunities for varied training, and competitive salary progression for PhD graduates.
“The programme made me feel part of Shell, granting me excellent support and multidisciplinary training. It also rewards hard work and, seven months in, I received the Vice President’s Award.
“I now develop cutting-edge mobile technologies for the organisation, like the Shell Motorist App. I’m also part of the Shell Campus Ambassador Programme, promoting Shell to students at my former university.
“I like the fact that Shell nurtures a passionate, talented workforce through its people-orientated approach. Moreover, I love my job, and that I was given a challenging role with real responsibility from the beginning.”

There are two ways to join the Shell Graduate Programme: an Assessed Internship if you’re in your penultimate year, or a Shell Recruitment Day if you are in your final year or have less than three years’ work experience.
HOW TO APPLY
ONLINE APPLICATIONAt www.shell.com/graduates, choose the Assessed Internship or Shell Recruitment Day, depending on your year of study. Complete an application form and upload an up-to-date copy of your CV/resumé. Make sure you are eligible to work in the country you’re applying to.
ONLINE ASSESSMENTOnce your application has been successfully submitted, you’ll receive an email notification with instructions on how to complete an online assessment. This has two parts. Each must be completed and submitted within seven working days. Practice tests are available online.
PART 1Competency-based questionsThe first part of the online assessment is not timed, but will take you around 20 minutes. Once completed and submitted, you’ll receive an email notification of the outcome. Candidates who successfully complete section one will then be sent a separate email to complete part two.
PART 2Decision-making and problem-solving tasks The second part of the online assessment consists of two tasks: a decision-making task that assesses how you respond to common situations that Shell graduates may face; and a problem-solving task that assesses your capacity for solving numerical problems.
The decision-making task is not timed, but the problem-solving task does have a time limit. This assessment should take around 45 minutes to complete in total.
INTERVIEWIf you are successful in passing the second online assessment, you may be invited to an interview. This takes place either face-to-face or over the phone. It is an opportunity for you to tell us more about why you are applying to Shell, share your achievements, outline the challenges you’ve faced and demonstrate how you’ve shown the qualities we’re seeking.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
ASSESSED INTERNSHIP Throughout your Assessed Internship you will be guided by a mentor and a supervisor. They will conduct a formal mid-term review, followed by a final review where you’ll be asked to complete an online exercise and written task. You’ll also be asked to prepare a final presentation about your project before a final interview. Following a successful internship, you could be offered a place in our Graduate Programme.
OFFERAfter successfully completing your Assessed Internship, you could join our Graduate Programme where there are suitable places OR if you have successfully passed the final assessment during the Shell Recruitment Day we’ll be in touch to let you know the final outcome and if there is a suitable place in our Graduate Programme.
SHELL RECRUITMENT DAY If you opted to attend a Shell Recruitment Day at stage 1, and you pass the interview, you could be invited to this next stage. We will invite you to an afternoon of interactive sessions to give you further insights into Shell. You will not be assessed during this session. The next day we’ll give you a range of assessed exercises to complete. These include an online simulation of working on a real project, a written exercise, group discussion, a self-reflection interview, a case study that includes a presentation and a final interview.

HINTS AND TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION
We want you to succeed in your application to Shell, so here are some hints and tips to support you.
What we look for
Throughout the application and assessment process, we’ll be assessing you in the following three areas, which we call the CAR criteria:
Capacity
How well you absorb information, analyse problems, make fact-based decisions and propose innovative solutions.
Achievement
How well you get things done, for example your drive, resilience, self-confidence and organisational skills.
Relationships
How well you work in teams, communicate and respect others.
Tips for the online assessment
Our two part online assessment is a core element of our application process. To give yourself the best opportunity of success, you should:
Make sure you’re in the right frame of mind to take the assessments.
Find a quiet place to take them; somewhere you won’t be interrupted.
Take your time and read the questions thoroughly. Do not rush. Only the numerical problem-solving test will be timed.
Keep an English dictionary and a calculator to hand.
