    KALAMAZOO hISTORYThe Ladies Library

    Association was orga-

nized in 1852. It is the

    oldest womens club

    in Michigan and third

    oldest in the U.S. Also,

    the Ladies Library

    Association building is

    the oldest built for a

    womens organization

    in the country.

    O R I G I N O F T h E N A M E

    K A L A M A Z O O

    Kalamazoo was originally a Native

American name, though its exact origin

has not been pinpointed. Some say it

means the mirage of reflecting river, others say it means bubbling or boil-

    ing water.

    E A R L Y S E T T L E M E N T S

The earliest residents of the area were

the mound builders, an early race

    of Native Americans subsisting on

farming. A number of earthen moundsattributed to these people still exist in

the area. The most prominent one can

    be found in downtown Kalamazoos

    Bronson Park.

    Experts believe the mound builders

were probably taken over by other

    Native American tribes who traveled

down from the north. The earliest writ-ten records tell of the Sioux frequently

    occupying the region. The Mascoutin

and the Miami also appeared in the

area. At the time of settlement,

    Kalamazoo County was occupied by

the Pottawatomi tribe, a branch of the

    greater Algonquin people.

In 1680, the first settlers journeyedthrough Southern Michigan, pass-

ing through Prairie Ronde and Climax.

    Two traders occasionally did business

in the county more than a century later,

    beginning in 1795.

The Treaty of 1795 opened the

    Northwest Territory for settlement.

It also set aside a large portion of

what was to be Kalamazoo County for

    a Native American reservation, known

    as Match-e-be-nash-she-wish. This

may have been the chief gatheringplace of the Pottawatomi. The Treaty of

1821, known as the Chicago Treaty, opened this plot of land to the settlers

and became the basis for many of the

    countys land titles.

In 1827, the Native American reservation

was consolidated in the southern end

of Kalamazoo County and the north-

ern end of St. Joseph County. Another

treaty with the Native Americans in1833 arranged the exchange of five

million acres of Native American land

for $40.00 in trinkets and trappings.

The enforcement of the treaty in 1840

    required the relocation of Kalamazoos

    Native Americans across the Mississippi

    River.

In 1829, Titus Bronson built the firstcabin within the modern city limits of

Kalamazoo on Arcadia Creek, west of

the present Westnedge Avenue. A year

later, he built a new cabin on the cur-

    rent site of Bronson Park.

The county itself was organized by an

act of the territorial legislature and

approved by the governor on July 3,1830. The town of Bronson was offi-

cially designated the county seat on

May 1, 1831. Five years later, an influ-

ential group of men in town, dismayed

by the apparent eccentricities of Titus

Bronson, had the name of the town

    changed to Kalamazoo.

As the size of Kalamazoo County

grew, so did the variety of social and cul-

    tural activities. The Kalamazoo Gazette,

the countys earliest newspaper, is one

of the states oldest. Many other paperswere published here in the early years,

    including the Kalamazoo Telegraph

    (1844-1916).

    The countys educational facilities have

always been a source of pride for resi-

dents. In April 1833, the territorial gover-

nor signed legislation authorizing a char-

ter for the Michigan and Huron Institute.Over the years, the Institute evolved into

    the well-respected Kalamazoo College.

At present, the county boasts four insti-

    tutions of higher learning, including

    the states oldest, Kalamazoo College,

    along with Western Michigan University,

    Kalamazoo Valley Community College

    and Davenport University.

    Besides excelling in education,

Kalamazoo was the site of Abraham

Lincolns only Michigan speech in 1858.

Lincoln agreed that in light of the slave

controversy in Kansas, the question of

slavery should be not only the greatest

question, but the sole question on vot-

ers minds. Four years later, both the

state and the county supported Lincolnin his successful bid for the Presidency.

The home of Dr. Nathan Thomas in

Schoolcraft served as a stop on the

    Underground Railroad. It is estimated

that Dr. Thomas and his wife helped

between 1,000 to 1,500 fugitive slaves

escape to freedom from 1840 to 1860.

A number of interesting products have

been produced in Kalamazoo County. A

    brief list includes: Shakespeare fishing

    rods and reels, Upjohns Kaopectate,

Kalamazoo Stoves, Bowers Lighters,Checker Motors taxicabs and Gibson

    guitars. Kalamazoo was known as

Celery City in the early 1900s and

was the largest producer of celery in the

United States. Currently, the county pro-

duces more bedding plants than any

other location in the United States.
