Discover HeadingtonIt is easy to think you know Headington if you’ve driven through it. But behind the main drag are lively neighbourhoods and some beautiful old Cotswold stone buildings, centred around pubs The Black Boy (F/G2) or Butcher’s Arms (F4). There’s even a shark (F3) sticking out of the roof of a house, who presides over the weekly Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.Headington is rich with parks and green spaces, including Shotover (off G5), once a Royal Forest providing venison for the King and now popular for walks and science. Mesopotamia (off B4) is a beautiful shortcut through to University Parks and central Oxford.It is also home to the main campuses of Oxford Brookes University, and the city’s excellent hospitals.
Boats & WaterwaysThe quintessential Oxford craft is a punt. Punting is a ridiculous sport, but when you’re gliding along eye-to-eye with moorhens and trailing your hand in the grubby old Thames there is nothing nicer. You can hire punts from Cherwell Boathouse (Sum G6), Magdalen Bridge (Cen K7) or Folly Bridge (Cen H10). There is a change of levels along the Cherwell so to traverse this you’ll need to take your punt up or down the rollers (Cen K3). The Victoria Arms in Marston is a gorgeous place to tie up and drink a swift pint before drifting home.You can also hire pedalos (Magdalen Bridge), take a river cruise from Folly Bridge to Abingdon, join Oxford Canoe Club (Donnington Bridge), hire a narrowboat from College Cruisers (Cen D4), or watch rowers in full glory in Torpids (end Feb) or Eights Week (end May) in Christ Church Meadows.
Who is Aunt Sally?Aunt Sally is a popular pub game in Oxfordshire. No-one knows how it came about, or why it’s called that, but it might date from the Civil War. It’s a cross between skittles and a coconut shy: players throw wooden sticks at a skittle atop an iron plinth and try to knock it off, scoring “a doll”. If you fail to hit with any of your sticks that’s “a blob”. Matches Wed nights, April-Sept.

Oxford City Farm is brand new (C10).It’s a region still full of independent shops, including Indigo (ethical clothes), PMT (guitars), Silvesters (hardware/DIY), The Goldfish Bowl (tropical fish), Gameskeeper (boardgames) & Truck Store (records).
