There is a great market for
religious experience in our
world; there is little enthusiasm
for the patient acquisition of
virtue, little inclination to sign
up for a long term
apprenticeship in what earlier
generations of Christians called
holiness.
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson
The Gospel
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith
– and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God –
not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
The Gospel
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in advance
for us to do.Ephesians 2:10

Serving Focused
• Body of Christ
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all
its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form
one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free
—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
Even so the body is not made up of one part but of
many.
1 Corinthians 12:12-14
Serving Focused
• Spiritual Gifts
There are different kinds of gifts, but the
same Spirit distributes them. There are
different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
There are different kinds of working, but in
all of them and in everyone it is the same
God at work.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Serving Focused • Spiritual Gifts
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of
wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same
Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing
by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another
prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another
speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the
interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same
Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Submission Focused
• Submission
Have confidence in your leaders and
submit to their authority, because they
keep watch over you as those who must
give an account. Do this so that their work
will be a joy, not a burden, for that would
be of no benefit to you.
Hebrews 13:17
Submission Focused • Submission
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human
authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,
or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do
wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will
that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of
foolish people. Live as free people, but do not use your
freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show
proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear
God, honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:13-17
