This priority was made clear some years ago with the establishment of the “community ministries” endowment that dedicates resources to ministries involving FCC volunteers and focused on the Jefferson City area. Many congregations are teeming with ideas but lack the resources to turn them into reality; we have the resources and just need to keep developing the ideas! This past spring, a group of leaders from our church had a conversation with leaders from East School. There was interest in hearing what more FCC might do to support the students and staff at the school. Two areas were quickly identified. First, we were told that attendance was a real issue. The reasons are complex, but kids weren’t getting to school as often as they needed to be. The second issue that was mentioned involved what happened outside the school day. Sadly many families lacked strong, positive relationships with each other and with the community. Sometimes those negative interactions beyond the school disrupted life inside the school. “If you’re going to bite off a challenge,” they said, “those are the places to start.” (connued page 3) AUG 3, 2016 ~ VOL. 72, ISSUE 16 THE CHURCH BELL Brown paper bags and a list of items will be available at the back of the sanctuary this Sunday for you to take and fill with items for WOC School Kits. Some of these kits will be given out to kids at East School the rest will be taken to the Festival of Sharing in Sedalia in October. Any amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your generosity! The Christian Education Committee is hosting a discussion about Children's Sunday School and Faith Formation on Wednesday, Aug. 10th at 5:30pm in the Activities Room. Parents of children nursery to grade 5 and individuals interested in working with that age group are especially encouraged to attend. We will be brainstorming ways to encourage faith development of the children in our congregation and support their families. There is also a Fall Sunday School Registration Form on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fccjcmo/ for you to fill out that would help us greatly during our discussion. Thank you!

PASTORAL PONDERINGS (continued from page 1)

That initial discussion led to some dreaming that has led to some concrete plans beginning to take shape. We’ve got a few ideas for how we might encourage and incentivize attendance because kids need to be in a classroom now if they are going to thrive in the future. And we’re planning a community block party for East School families on the evening of September 9th from 5 until 7:30 p.m. There will be food, fun, and a positive environment at the beginning of the school year. I have been blown away by the interest from FCC members in bringing leadership to these projects, but succeeding requires the entire church working together. If you’re hearing about this idea for the first time or not sure how you can plug in, I would strongly encourage you to explore ways of getting involved. Vivian Murphy is shepherding the attendance conversation and Elaine West is guiding the block party planning, while Rev. Sarah is providing staff support to both efforts. I would ask that you keep both of these initiatives in your prayers and if you are interested in becoming more involved, even if that means just hanging out at the block party on 9/9, please give Kathy a call at the church and we’ll get you looped in. Thanks for all that each of you do for FCC, and I look forward to partnering with you on these exciting opportunities to share life with the world! Stay Steadfast in Hope, Rev.
