Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:9-13) On September 23 rd , we honored all those in our congregation who are volunteers. While we don’t always like to come up front to be honored in this way, we do appreciate all who serve the Lord. That led me to write this article about serving. In the first part of the book of Romans, (chapters 1-11) Paul writes to the Christian believers in Rome about the righteousness of God that we receive by faith in Jesus Christ. In the latter part (chapters 12-15) of this Epistle he speaks to them about how to use that righteousness – granted to us by God’s grace – in service. He tells them quite bluntly that we are to put our righteousness into practice by serving God and others. When you think about it, there are really only two categories for serving. Either we use our time serving ourselves or serving others. Paul tells us, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” There was a dear Christian lady named Shirley, who would introduce herself by saying with a smile, “Hi! I’m Shirley, I work for Jesus.” She would say this to complete strangers. And when they regained their ability to speak – because they were shocked for a moment – she would ask who they were and who they worked for. While you may not always want to introduce yourself this way, you probably could. All your service is to be for the Lord, whether taking care of your family, doing work with the church, volunteering in the community, or taking care of yourself as the Holy Spirit’s temple. So, Paul adds some encouragement as to how we can serve: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” As we acknowledge this Mission month of October 2012, may we realize the privilege we have to serve our Lord. Because we have been declared righteous through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we serve. We serve Jesus. And we do it joyfully, serving the Lord. “Imagine! Living as God’s forgiven and forgiving family.” In Christ, Pastor Walsh

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:9-13)

On September 23rd, we honored all those in our congregation who are volunteers.

Practice hospitality.”

As we acknowledge this Mission month of October 2012, may we realize the privilege we have to serve our Lord. Because we have been declared righteous through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we serve. We serve Jesus. And we do it joyfully, serving the Lord. “Imagine!
