I'M REALLY glad the Marbles havegot into the charts. I'm knocked outby the record-that singer reallyhas got an outstanding voice hasn'the?

I must admit that when I firstheard Leapy Lee it didn't makeany impression, but I like it now-I like Country and Western.

Mary Hopkin? I like the record,it's very nice. I think the backing isfantastic-it's like the backing outof a Popeye cartoon and then a bitfurther on it sounds like Walt Disney.

The Dave Clark Five record is astomper. I heard the RaymondFroggatt version the other day and Ididn't like it so much. I like MikeSmith shouting in it.

I hate the Doors record. TheKinks did that sort of thing a longtime ago which was great, and theDoors bring it out now which is aload of rubbish, and nowhere nearas good as the Kinks.

I like the Status Quo record.Marty Wilde is a great song writer,and I'm glad for him that it got intothe charts.

I don't like Hugo Montenegro'sversion of "The Good, The Bad andthe Ugly," perhaps it's because I

saw the film.

for `Gulliver'-LONG JOHN Baldry is to playhis first straight acting part in thetitle role of the Mermaid Theatre'sChristmas production, "Gulliver'sTravels," in London.

There is no singing in the pro-duction, which is being directedby Sean Kenny and presentedjointly by Bernard Miles andAndrew Oldham.

Baldry, who flies out on Mon-day for promotional visits toAmerica and the Mexico OlympicGames, has been reproduced life-size on canvas by record producerMike Leander's wife, Maureen,who has previously painted MartinLuther King, Ravi Shankar,Esther and Abi Ofarim andSandie Shaw.

"Mexico," his new single, soldover 3,000 copies on Monday, thefirst "shopping day" since theopening of the Olympic Games.

THREE MONTHS ago at an Albert Hall charity concerta relatively -unknown artist took the show by storm. Hewas Joe Cocker, who, after a ten-minute build-up by com-pere Tony Hall, stepped on to the stage and stole the showwith his version of "With A Little Help From My Friends."

At the end of this month Joe reappears at the Albert Hallon the bill for the Tiny Tim charity concert. He will probablysing that song again and receive the same thunderous applause-because it has established him in this country and is cur-rently at 21 in the chart.

Joe, 23-year-old ex -butcher from Sheffield, started his career inshow business one Saturday morning when he knocked on recordpromotion man Tony Hall's door in London and asked him toplay a demo disc of "Marjorine." This turned out to be his firstsingle in April, and although a comparative "flop," it got plentyof airplay and was the start of big things for Joe.

"We held a reception for Joe when `Marjorine' was out," saysTony Hall. "We had to practically kidnap people and drag themto it. But Joe closed the show by singing 'With A Little HelpFrom My Friends,' and it caused such a sensation with everyonethere that we knew it had to be his next single."

Spoonful, Ray Charles and theTraffic's "Fee lin' Alright," whichhe recorded in America re-cently hacked by Ray Charles'Raelets. It will also includesome of Joe's own composi-tions. Record producer, DennyCordell, says there will beno more Lennon -McCartneynumbers.

At present playing datesaround the country, Joe will bedoing two "pilot" shows for apackage tour with the Who andthe Crazy World Of ArthurBrown. These are at Waltham -stow Granada (November 8),and Slough Astoria (9). If asuccess, the package tour ideawill continue in the New Year.

TrafficstandstillTRAFFIC will do no more "live"dates in Britain until Febtuarynext year. Instead, they plan tospend the next few months work-ing on another album.

But in February the group-again three-piece now Dave Masonhas quit for good-plans a seriesof selected appearances aroundBritain, probably with one ormore star American acts.

A spokesman for the group toldDisc: "They will do the datesbetween completing the LP,

.around January, and going to theStates for eight weeks from endof March.

"Stevie Winwood wants to playclub dates again and the boys willalso probably set up shows inplaces like London, Birminghamand Manchester. And they hopeto book top American names toappear with them."

Reports that Dave Mason-nowin America-might be joining theNice as replacement for guitaristDave O'List have been stronglydenied.

Cat Stevens inhospital rushCAT STEVENS was rushed tohospital last week with suspectedpneumonia.

Cat, who only recently returnedto pop after being seriously ill withTB, was kept in hospital over theweekend for observation and dis-charged on Monday.

He has been advised by doctorsto rest as much as possible in thenext month.

joins Faces!SPECULATION that the Herdand Small Faces were on the pointof a business merger wasstrengthened this week by HerdPeter Frampton's unexpected ap-pearance at a Small Faces concertlast Sunday.

Faces, appearing with DJ DaveEager at Manchester's Belle VueTop Ten Club, went onstage fortheir 35 -minute spot and the audi-ence was amazed to see Frampton"sitting -in" on guitar. As well asplaying throughout the Faces' spot,Frampton also sang with SteveMarriott on "Tin Soldier" and"All Or Nothing."

Rumours in the past linking theFaces with the Herd have sug-gested that the Herd were joiningImmediate (Faces' record label)and that the Faces had producedthe Herd's current single "Sun-shine Cottage."

Said Peter Frampton this week:"The Small Faces and the Herdare simply good friends. I wentup to Manchester to see the groupand was persuaded to sit-in withthem.

"There is no likelihood of anylink between the two groups on abusiness basis."

And Steve Marriott added:"Peter and I are good mates, andwe thought it would be a bit of aloon if he played with us thatnight."

LOOK BiACKBURN TVSPECTACULARS on the Beach Boys, Kinks and Bee Gees; "Revived 45" spots with groupslike Manfred Mann with Paul Jones and Peter and Gordon; request spots; new faces neverseen on TV; jam sessions with top men from different groups; and regular spots from Lon-don's famous "Revolution" club ... these are just some of producer Mike Mansfield's ambitiousplans for the new look "Time For Blackburn" show, which is nationally networked this week.

Show will now be screened by Southern, Ulster, Grampian and Scottish on Saturday; Tyne Teesand Border on Monday; and London Weekend, Harlech and Anglia the following Friday.

First show for London, including Who, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, Dave ClarkFive, John l'ialker, Long John Baldry and newcomer Heath Hampstead will therefore be screenedon October 25 at the old "Ready, Steady, Go!" time.

Producer Mike Mansfield spoke to Disc of his plans:"Tony Blackburn and the production team will be travelling with the Bee Gees on their train

Jose, 22 - year - old blindPuerto Rican singer/guitar-ist, travels everywhere withhis "seeing eye" dog, Trudy.British regulations state thatany animal entering Britainis liable to quarantine laws

for a minimum period oftime.

Last year, when Jose washere for recording sessionsand a TV appearance, Trudywas kept in special kennelsthroughout the visit andJose travelled into the coun-try every day to see her.

"When I'm not with her,"he says, "she pines andwon't eat."

The album, her first for over ayear, consists of 12 tracks in-cluding Burt Bacharach's "ThisGirl's In Love With You," IrmaFranklin's "Take Another LittlePiece Of My Heart," Rita Wright's"I Can't Give Back The Love,"and a special Portuguese song withEnglish words by American singerNorma Tanega called "Morning."

Chances of Davy and the rest of the group returning for concertswere outlined by agent Vic Lewis on his return this week frommeeting the Monkees management in Los Angeles. He said: "I amhoping to bring them sometime next year, but just when is impossibleto say because their itinerary for 1969 is still being sorted out.

The LP - titled "Le Blon," after the Clive West-lake/Dave Most song which is her new single onOctober 25-also features hits like "River Deep,Mountain High," "Daydream," "Mrs. Robinson,""Hold Me Tight," "Sunshine Superman," "Funny,Familiar, Forgotten Feelings," "All My Love"-anda special version of the Cat Stevens smash, "I LoveMy Dog," dedicated to her own pet, Albert.

Anita returned last week from Brazil where she

came 11th out of 38 in the country's song festival-but collected three top awards which made her thestar of the event.

DOZY, of the Dave Deegroup, will marry hishometown childhoodsweetheart, Yvonne Skin-ner-to whom he hasbeen secretly engaged forthe past two years-before Christmas.

And as he added hisname to the current crop ofpop marriages - Hermanalso plans a winter wedding-Dozy and his 18 -year -oldbride-to-be launched a shockattack on the Mick Jagger/Marianne Faithfull relation-ship.

POLITICS:

I,m really quite interested inpolitics. But I'm scared to

open my mouth about it infront of Aug, cos he's alwaysgiving me guvnor lecturesabout Russia and Israel.

He feels very strongly aboutthe Israel situation.

I think anyone would be daftnot to worry about the state ofthis country, but I obviouslycan't do anything about it, soI have to leave it to those whoknow.

Really I reckon politicians havea bloody rough job. They'reunder a lot of strain and pressure-more than I am!

If I was an M.P.(what a joke!) I

think thefirst thingI'd do is revise theunions.

I'd cut out allthe garbage andsort out the wholemess. Really, un-ions today are a

big joke. Sure theywere good whenthey started yearsago, cos they wereneeded. But nowit's a question of"I'm not doingthat it's againstthe Union," or"I've got to do thisslowly, because ifI rush it THAT'Sagainst the Union."

People aren't in-terested in theirjobs anymore. It'sso nowhere as a

BRIAN AUGER:I shan't be working with

Brian and the boys for the restof my life-we all know that.But for the time being, as faras any other organist in thiscountry goes, I just couldn'twork with anyone else.

I feel I've built up a very specialrelationship with the wholegroup. I'm not really treated as abird and I don't mind that at all.Well, sometimes when I'm strugg-ling about with cases and things,I'll yell at one of them and askthem to help me. And if I'm very,VERY lucky, they just might!

We sort of help each otherthrough situations. We treat eachother as individuals. There's no"Oh, we'd better look after Toolscos she's a girl." It would be daftbecause I'm just like them.

We just leap about togetherand then get down to things.We're serious about our music,and that's about it!

MUSIC AND ME:Well they do really go to-

gether. I've never thought iflike ME as a person. I knowthere are a lot of things I

DON'T like about myself.I'm too impulsive sometimes.

I get very het up about somethingand have a terrible go at it, thensuddenly I realise I might havebeen wrong and I shouldn't haveleapt around so much.

"You've made yourself look anidiot," I think. "What's all thatabout? It didn't get me anywhereat all."

Sure this business puts a strainon you. And if you're a bird it'seven greater. It's not because I'mweak or anything, but there arelittle things a woman has to doand get together, a man doesn't.

Like I have to get up an hourearlier than the group becauseI have to put make-up on-thenI go to bed half -an -hour later, cosI've got to take the whole ruddylot off again!

I've got to own up, there havebeen times when I've felt likegiving up the whole scene. Butthere's no point in going so farwith something and just begin tofeel you're really getting some-thing across. If you give it all upmaybe you're happy for twomonths, then you suddenly think"Christ, what have I done?"

CENSORSHIP:I don't really believe in

censorship for films, books orplays. I think people should beable to decide for themselveswhat they want to see.

I don't think producers andpeople would go completelyoverboard if they were allowed toput anything on. Some mighttake advantage of the situationbut the majority certainlywouldn't.

Of course things could get outof hand and if there was somethingthat was really going to be badfor people to see-really harmfulfor them-then I'd be deadagainst it.

And it could be quite a shockif people weren't well informed.I mean, someone could be out andthink "Oh I'll just nip along tothe pictures" and if they didn'tknow what it was about andwhat they were in for it couldbe an unbelievable shock for them.

In the last five years alonepeople's attitudes to certainsubjects has changed radically.For instance a film like "The Fox"probably wouldn't have got pastthe censors then. But as societychanges all the time their attit-udes change and they will acceptmore.

Quite honestly I don't thinkthere'll ever be atimewhen there'sabsolutely no censorship at all.

AUDIENCES:I know it sounds pretty

corny, but we've found aud-iences all over the world arethe same. If people like musicand come along to be enter-tained they're the same nomatter what language theyspeak.

Mind you, language can be ahang-up. It took a long while forme to break the language difficultyabroad. Okay, we broke throughin France and the Continent,record -wise, long before we didhere. But we didn't break throughso easily as far as audiences went.

`Language canbe a hang-up'

We were successful on theroad in England long before ourrecords meant anything.

When we go to France now Ialways do one number in Frenchand a bit of chat. I feel much morecomfortable and more togethernow. We're lucky 'cos we getguvnor audiences all over theworld.

But in everything there's goodand bad. In England alone I'malways surprised how gigs canchange. We do universities, clubsand ballrooms and of coursesometimes they can be the biggestdrag ever. But it doesn't oftenhappen-usually they're reallyguvnor and together.

RELIGION:I've never been religious

really. I wasn't brought up inany faith. Religion is good forsome people. The fact that itexists comforts people wholike to feel there's somethingto turn to when nothing elseis left for them.

But if there wasn't religionthere'd be something else andIT would be called religion. Whatis religion anyway? I don't knowif I believe in God as such. I feelthere must be some kind of forceor power-if you want to labelit as God that's OK.

I don't really go along with thescientific theory of creation, be-cause sometimes I get the feelingthat it's all too worked out to beaccidental. The human body forinstance is so complex and soclever it's a work of art.

The only thing that worriesme about religion is the power ithas. I don't believe the Popeshould tell Catholics what to doabout a thing like birth control.I don't think one person shouldhave that kind of power. I thinkthere are a lot of Catholics whoinwardly don't agree but they'vegot to stick to it. It's frightening.

WHEN Gordon Millseventually brought TomJones to London, afternearly a year of hesita-tion and decision, notmany people wanted toknow.

"He's scruffy and rough,"they said. "Just look athim."

"Yes," replied Gordon,"but you wait 'till you seethis boy MOVE."

Leapy Lee toldme that story, andit will alwaysstick.

Because ifthere's any onething that stickssolid in the memory about aTom Jones concert, it's theway that boy MOVES!

And move he did at Lon-don's New Victoria Cinemalast Wednesday, when for 40minutes at the start of his 1968tour, the Welsh wonder knockedcold a jam-packed audience ofstars and fans.

From the moment he leapt onstage, immaculate in blue three-piece suit with plain light blueshirt and shiny blue bow -tieyou knew (as if you didn't al-ready) that there is no one inthe world to match him.

Exciting, controlled, sexy,cool; these adjectives and manymore apply, yet none of themcan do Jones complete justice.

The bow -tie lasted until theend of the first number: the all -systems -go Jerry Lee Lewisrocker "Turn On Your LoveLight." Then it was away witha "By God it's 'ot in 'eretonight."

"Take your jacket off then,"screamed the fans.

Understandable, perhaps, un-til you realise these fans aremiddle-aged women with hus-bands and families.

"OK, keep it clean" was theJones reply, with one of those

was followed by Otis Redding's"Hard Too Handle," and Irealised that Tom Jones canget away with murder. Theymade a film of the last Britishconcerts by Uncle Otis and histour, but no TV station wouldshow it because they said themovements were far too sexy

. . erotic, even.But Tom gets away with it,

and they all love it. Hipsgyrating, pelvis grinding, armsflailing, fingers everywhere.None of these movements canbe deliberately rehearsed. Tomaccompanies every song withthe movements he feels at thetime-the whole body shuddersat a drum crash and the armsare up and down with everyaccentuated beat.

LYNTON GUEST, the organistwhose removal from the LoveAffair in favour of originalmember Morgan Fisher haspiled Disc's postbag with pro-tests from his fans, went alongat our invitation last week tosee Love Affair on the currentScott Walker tour and becomeour "Guest Critic." Here iswhat Lynton had to say of theLove Affair act:

Taking Love Affair's fourlo' numbers first, I'm afraid

STEVE ELLIS: "Sang well "

the opening spot, "EverlastingLove" was diabolical. It was ashambles - there were severalmistakes and the balance ofsound was very bad. The wholenumber seemed very messy.

"Tobacco Road," the nextnumber, was very, very good.The balance seemed miracu-lously to have improved. SteveEllis sang very well and thebacking was very, very good.Of their four songs, this wasby far and away the best.

"Handbags And The Glad-rags" didn't bring out the fullpotential of this Michael d'Abosong. It wasn't bad, but thenagain it wasn't good. Verymediocre, in fact. The songdeserved a better arrangement.

"Day Without Love" wasgood considering they had onlythe four instruments. In fact itwas very good. Steve againsang well, the backing wasgood, but they could have done

fifth number, "Delilah," thesweat was dripping off him,and we almost felt damp in thefront row.

Next was "Danny Boy," stillsounding quite unbelievablethough perhaps loaded with toomuch feeling this time. andafter that came the ever-increasing melody of hits.

"Help Yourself," "I'll NeverFall In Love Again," "Green,Green Grass Of Home" and"It's Not Unusual," which Isay again, is still the bestsingle he's ever made.

And finally "Night Of AThousand Dances," with thelast leap about the stage andthe heart-rending cry "I needa little woman!"

Judging from the reaction inthe stalls, there wasn't one inthe house who would have re-fused the request!

But don't be mistaken. TomJones has class. Real class. It'sso real it doesn't show. Hisvoice and breath control isbetter than ever, yet the earthysoul stuff he so obviously en-joys will never be wiped out,whatever Gordon Mills maywant to the contrary.

So . . . Tom Jones? Great asever, but that wasn't all. For

with the backing voices whichappear on the record.

My overall impression wasthat I don't see why Rex Bray -ley bothered to go along be-cause you couldn't hear him.The organ was at times dis-torted to the extreme; the basswas played very well; but thesound left a lot to be desired.

I've got endless praise forMaurice Bacon's drumming. Hehas improved beyond beliefover the past six months. AndSteve is always good. What eLsecan you say about his singing?

The sound was not themiraculous new sound whichI'd been led to believe it wasby members of the group andtheir management. But thevisual side was very, verygood, both the clothes theychose and their movementabout stage, and it was the 1111)beat part of the whole act.

taking a fair section of thelimelight, and showing herselfto be far more than just a dis-tinctive voice, fiery Miss DellaReese.

Della is not an artist too wellknown in really pop circles. Shefalls into the Ella Fitzgerald,Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughanclass, yet is in fact more a souland gospel singer than any-thing else.

Among her numbers: "AHouse Is Not A Home" and"Look Of Love" from BurtBacharach; "It Was A VeryGood Year;" "On A ClearDay" and "Cabaret." But forme the highlight was "GirlTalk," the number more asso-ciated with Jack Jones, whichwas prefaced by a long andvery drily amusing monologueabout Della, men, women, anddomestic chat like that.

She has the regal air anddeportment of Mahalia Jack-son, the punch of Aretha Frank-lin, but above all the voice,charm and personality of DellaReese . . . and she will havefound herself many thousandsof new admirers by the end ofthis tour.

And, although he's got littleor nothing to do with music, aword of praise for rubber -facedAmerican comic Charlie Callas,who didn't get all the laughs hedeserved from the first house,first night crowd.

Perhaps they didn't expect acomic on a theatre tour, butCharlie (who looks a lot likeLeapy Lee, so help him) is avery funny man.

So all in all, a fantastic showand a set-up that Scott Walkermust surely be envious of.

If you've got a ticket to seethe tour, you'll know what Imean. And if you haven't . . .

well I should think it's hardluck. They must be like golddust!

But you should see that boyMOVE!

IT WOULD BE hard tofind any parents whowouldn't relish the ideaof their daughter mar-rying a nice wholesomeclean-cut boy like Her-man.

But when MireilleStrasser's French par-ents were first intro-duced to the boy whohad fallen in love withtheir daughter, theywere, with Gallicshrewdness, just a bitwary.

"When you say you're ina group people always ex-pect the worst," Hermanadmitted in Paris this week.

He and 22 -year -old Mireillewere on a week's holidaygetting kitted out for theirmarriage next month. "I don'tblame them, I'd be the same ifit was my daughter, and myparents would be the same.

"You hear so many storiesabout dirty groups sleeping invans, they really think you'regoing to be rough." -

Met at a partyThat was nearly six months

ago, since when Herman hasnot only become an incrediblysettled person, but has com-pletely won over Mr. and Mrs.Strasser.

When Lyn marriedRicky it was the tra-ditional "Girl meetsBoy next door." Rickylived two doors awayfrom her in Dagen-ham, and they wentout together for threeyears and then decidedto get married. Rickyhad then been with theTremeloes for a year,

so Lyn had a roughidea of what she wasletting herself in for.

The group w a splaying mostly roundthe London area, soLyn was able to goalong. Then graduallythe tours went furtherafield, trips abroadwere more frequentuntil five years laterLyn has found herselfvery much alone.

Herman's Hermitsare a group equallybusy and get -aroundas the Tremeloes, sowhen Mireille Strasser- Herman's 22 -year -old fiancee-gets mar-ried in November, shemay well be lettingherself in for the sameproblems.

Lyn's advice afterfive years is: "If yougo out with a personin a group you knowwhat it's like. Peoplekeep telling me 'Oh,

it won't last muchlonger' but on it goes.This year's even worsethan ever, Rick willbe going to Israel andAmerica and he'll beaway for Christmasfor the first time ever.It's terribly lonely, butyou just have to pushthat to the back ofyour mind or you'dgo mad."

Lyn now has twochildren to cope withand keep her occupied-four -year -old Helen,and Heidi (18 months)-so she is kept verymuch at home know-ing there are hundredsof fans surroundingher husband.

"You learn to over-come jealousy. Youhave to, otherwise youcouldn't make a go ofit. You've got to takeit right out of yourmind or you can't livewith it. I suppose it

does make you thinksometimes, all thosegirls. But if you meetthem, you realise it'swho the group arethat they are after,not what they are aspeople.

Lyn admits that inspite of the loneliness,the financial rewardsare great.

"People think it'sall roses and mar-vellous being marriedto a Tremeloe," saysLyn, "but I never con-sider that I'm marriedto a Tremeloe - I'mmarried to Rick, andI wouldn't miss out onbeing married tohim."

prime ministers are keen to have his company. For when theLabour Party held their annual conference in Blackpool,Mr. Harold Wilson invited Engelbert to join him for a drink.

A messenger arrived at Engelbert's dressing room at theBlackpool ABC Theatre to say that the Prime Minister andhis wife were in the theatre and would like him to have adrink.

They talked for half an hour and, said Engelbert afterwards:"He seemed to know a lot about our business."

When the Wilsons left the theatre, Mary Wilson was carryingtwo copies of his latest album "A Man Without Love."

"She asked me to sign one to her and another to their son,Giles."

Blackpool ABC summer season;Tom Jones has stepped out on 21standing -room -only concerts aroundthe country . . . anything Engelbertcan do, Tom can do better and viceWt.

But who holds the biggest popu-larity? It's a question that's constantlyasked and argued about by theirrespective fans, but there never will bean official answer.

Colin Berlin, agent to Tom andEngelbert,. says: "You can't makecomparisons between them. In theirown spheres both are very, very big.And they're both booked indepen-dently. It is never a case of, if Tom'snot free, Engelbert does the job in-stead.

Feminine appeal"They have their own audiences so

there must be a difference, I suppose.Both have domestic audiences, butEngelbert probably has more feminineappeal which goes from young to old,whereas Tom's is a rritore all-roundaudience, really.

"But with Tom doing a tour whereit's no cliche to say that there reallyis standing room only at all 21 datesand with Engelbert having broken thatBlackpool ABC box-office record, it'sclear that both in their own way arevast stars."

Wake up, get out of bed, drag a combacross your head-and come withDAVID HUGHES on an incredibleAT FIRST GLANCE itseemed a pretty dull, prettyordinary, unexciting day tospend with Leapy Lee. Afterall, eight hours confinedin Shepherd's Bush is notnormally the height ofaction.

But that's until you realisethat no day with Leapy is everdull, ordinary or unexciting.

"It's all right for you, mate,"he blinked, as I staggered upthe second flight of concretestairs to his Bayswater flat."I've been awake since fouro'clock. I'm gone, I'm reallygone. I'm a twitching nervouswreck!!"

I couldn't quite understand,why. The air seemed peacefulenough. His attractive modelwife Mary (he calls her Mollor maybe Mole) didn't look asif she'd had a violent argumentwith him.

"Take a look out there," heshrieked. "Lovely ain't it?That's Paddington sidings.Diesel engines going all thetime; and they're putting downa new main line track; andthey're digging up the roadoutside; and they're pullingdown the bridge at the end ofthe road. There's no peace. It'sall noise.

Pride

"The whole place vibrateswhenever a train goes past-and that's about every tenminutes. It's no good, I'll haveto move!"

But a calming cup of teasoon had the Leapy Lee smileback again, and as we slopedback down the stairs againa definitely rosy enthusiasticglow came over him . . . as ifsomething rather special wasabout to occur.

"You haven't seen it yet,have you. Me pride and joy."

And there in the street, stick-ing out like the reverse of asore thumb . . . Leapy's prideand joy - a gleaming greyCadillac.

"And it's mine, all paid for.No HP. It's the first big thingI've ever owned in my wholelife."

In fact, the car is somethingelse again! Electric windows,electric radio aerial, seats thatmove in all directions, stereo -

DAY INTHE LIFEOFLEAPY...phonic radio and a hundredand one other gadgets, plus anengine you can't hear andluxury you shouldn't be able toafford!

"Of course I'm knocked outwith it. What do YOU think?But, without trying to soundgood and righteous, I'm morepleased for Moll and the kids.The boot's bigger than theirbedroom!

"I bought it second-hand andgave it to the wife as a sur-prise. Surprise? I thought shewas going to have a heartattack. We were down at DianaDors' gaff, and I'd hidden itin the drive. We were all sup-posed to be having a slap-upmeal and then I'd show her thecar.

"I was more tensed -up thanshe was . . . and, I just couldn'twait. I wanted to enjoy themeal; you know .what I mean?

"But to see that look inMoll's eyes - well I almostcried. She's been a fantasticwife."

We sank into the 'Caddy'splush grey upholstered seatsand purred off in the sunlighttowards Shepherd's Bush andthe gloom of BBC corridorsand dressing rooms.

Once inside the "Top Of ThePops" building, Leapy becamehis genial self again, sayinghello to everybody; chatting tothe band, the producer, themake-up girls and anyone elsewho came in sight.

"I feel terrible. It's the 'flu.It's all over. I'll never makeit!"

And after a camera run-through; lunch of curried eggsand rice and two cups of tea;and an orchestra run-through,Leapy decided the Lee voicewas about to grind to a halt.

"And just before me first bigcabaret booking, too. Where'sthe nurse?"

To the rescue came producerColin Charman, who allowedLeapy to record the voice whileit was still there. So it wasback to the subterranean dress-ing -room for a hair -wash.

Suddenly Leapy rememberedhe had to go back to the flatto pick up his shirt which Mollwas ironing. Status Quo, whobustle everywhere like littlerabbits in a burrow, followedexcitedly in his wake, over-joyed at the chance to have asit in the Lee limousine.

"I fulfilled an ambition theother week," says Leapy. "1have very strange ambitions.This one was to ride on thebumper cars at the fair whileone of my records was beingplayed."

Meanwhile, back at thestudios, complete with theironed shirt, new suit and newblack suede boots, Leapywashed the hair, "I'll getpneumonia now for sure,"made. the appearance for whichhe'd been rehearsing since 11

a.m., and went home with twoBeechams Powders to try andsleep through another night ofdiesel trains, electric drills andassorted night workers.

"Remind me to tell you howI nearly became a Zen Bud-dhist," was the final cry as hemounted the stone steps.

Mike: a drag from start to boring finish

"MIKE NESMITH presents theWichita Train Whistle Sings" isa collection of instrumentals,mostly written by the Monkee,which get us absolutely nowhere.In fact, the LP is a drag fromstart to boring finish.

No tune is outstanding, theperformance of each one injectslittle to what is basically banal,and Mike has written sleevenotes reminiscent of what BobDylan wrote on the back of hisalbums.

Let's forget it-if we want aninstrumental album, there arehundreds better to choose from;and we think Mike is an integralpart of the Monkees. It's on theDot label.

"Motown Memories, Vol.2" brings us a gasser - BarrettStrong's "Money (That's What IWant)" which was one of theBeatles' inspirations. Also in-cluded are "I'll Always LoveYou," "Fingertips Part 2" and"Beechwood 4-5789" by theMarvelettes. Other artists re-corded include Diana Ross andthe Supremes ("Standing At TheCrossroads Of Love"), MaryWells, Martha Reeves and theVandellas, Brenda Holloway,Kim Weston, R. Dean Taylor.

THE NEW LPsthat it now has a lot to live upto. And unfortunately if themusic is any guide, there may bea large number of disappointedpeople about. The originalBroadway cast recording is nowavailable (RCA) and apart from"Aquarius" has little to offermusically. Doubtless the visualpresentation will add impact, butlistening to uninspiring musicwith dubious lyrics, we wonderwhether it was all worth it.

TIMI YURO, the sadlooking lady with the remark-able voice, strikes again with"T i m i In The Beginning"(Liberty), a good selection fromthe Yuro archives. Among theexcellent tracks are "Fever,""Hallelujah," "If You GottaMake A Fool Of Somebody"and "My Prayer." If you likeTimi Yuro you'll go for this.

"The King Of Rock BILLHALEY Plays" is the title of a"new" Ember album, and onlycomment is - very badly, and

with the worst dubbed onscreams we've heard in a longwhile. Not Haley as he was, noras he should be, and best for-gotten.

Well piddle noddle noo.Here's RAY ELLINGTON, stillwarm from his "Goon Show"days, with "The Best Of RayEllington (Ember). Remember"The Madison" and "Too OldTo Cut The Mustard"? Bothhere, and many more to warmthe cockles of your heart!

Some very sub - standardfolk songs by CHAD andJEREMY and others on "LiveFolk From The Mayfair TheatreLondon" (Ember). The sort ofstuff that's passable live, butshould never be recorded forposterity.

"IKE TURNER RocksThe Blues" (Ember) is a gooddelve into the past, revealing Ikeas he was before Tina and theIkettes turned him off urbanblues and on to soul. More in-strumental than vocal, and thebasic raw guitar sound is wellworth a listen.

To coincide with his latesttour, that phenomenon of thedrums BUDDY RICH turns hishands to a touch of the RaviShankars, and goes Eastern onDholak, as well as his usualdrum kit. "Rich A La Rakha"is a good experiment, but shouldhave been confined to one trackon a band album, we feel-(Liberty).

I'D like to take time out totalk about a close friend inas objective a fashion as

possible. It's not that hard, be-cause I've believed in Scott'stalent for many years. Butrecently he has improved anenormous amount. On the firstnight of the tour he was aninternational star in the sameclass as the greatest singersaround, yet still entirely indi-vidual. His TV show was anenormous success because hereis an artist young yet talented,with long hair but the voice ofmaturity.

He controls his voice more,makes greater use of variety. Hismovements and gestures are morenatural, he seems more relaxed.

And, as it happens, he is. Hisknowledge of classical musicgrows every day-he appreciatesthe most complex themes andideas. His intellect is beingsharpened-he reads as much as1 would like to.

His projected personality seemsto have burst forward. His versionof "If You Go Away" is the best1 have heard by any singer-Ikeep asking him to record it.Every word means more.

Ages ago we discussed the bestin pop music and came to theconclusion that the ideal wag toraise the standards-make greaterand more beautiful things morepopular. He is succeeding well,and as a critic I would like topoint this out. As a friend, I amglad-and so is he.

Nancy: instant stardom

Lee's 'Boots'

walking ...ONE OF THE quickest waysto make a fortune in pop musicthese days is to write a smashhit record. If you're lucky andit becomes a world-wide successrecorded by everyone fromTony Bennett to Tiny Tim youcan usually sit back and watchthe royalties roll in till you'reold and grey.

About two years ago a short,suave American record producercalled Lee Hazlewood had an ideafor a novelty song and scribbledthe words down on a tatty paperbag. He managed to persuadeFrank Sinatra's little girl, Nancy,to record it-and at the last countit had sold around three -and -a -half million copies.

Money

The song, of course, was"These Boots Were Made ForWalkin' " and it rapidly becameone of the biggest money -spinnersever and rocketed Nancy and Leeto instant stardom.

Hit followed hit after that.Nancy moved on to score withher father on "Something Stupid,"she and Lee joined forces for"Jackson" and together theycleaned up with a very imagina-tive TV spectacular.

And just to prove that successwas not just a flash -in -the -pan, Leelearned this week that his latestalbum with Nancy had justdropped out of the US chart -after 27 weeks.

"Not bad for a rather bad cow-boy singer and a short Italiangirl!" he joked this week when hebreezed into London for a fewdays business.

Boots' was obviously the bestthing that happened to us," saidLee. "I wrote 'Houston' for DeanMartin and I think that outsold it.But no song of mine ever sold somany so quickly.

"It made the top ten in nearlyevery country in the world and hasbeen recorded on about 80 differ-ent albums."

Tired

And now Lee - although heregularly writes songs for threehours a night, three times a week-is turning his extensive talent toTV producing. And already lined -up are TV specials with such starsas Shirley Bassey, Mama Cass,Bobbie Gentry and Nancy again.

"I still write songs to make aliving. But I must admit I'm get-ting a little tired of producingrecords. TV and pictures are what'sinteresting me now."

Today also Lee Hazlewood is inthe happy position of being ableto spare no expense in the thingshe does. A typical example of thisis his latest LP, "Love And OtherCrimes" for which he flew five topmusicians from Los Angeles toParis to make. In the end the airfares and hotel bills for the groupcame to more than the productioncost of the album.

"It must be one of the most ex-pensive LPs around," he grinned.

But we had a lot of fun.'

'I'D FEEL very uncom-fortable if I went backhome to Nelson now",says Tony Hicks. "I'dthink everyone was og-ling at me in the street."

This is one reason heloves London.

"People have come to meand said 'Oh but you're soORDINARY' - and that'snice. It pleases me. I'd hateto feel a freak. In Americaeveryone stared at us somuch I used to pretendwas window shopping whenI went out-standing withmy head nearly in everywindow we passed."

Of all the Hollies, andprobaPly of all the popgroups in England today,Tony Hicks is the nearestequivalent to Paul McCartneythere is.

He is a lover of fine things-antiques, books, paintings,beautiful houses, cars andmoney. And he has them all.

He admits to workingmainly for material posses-sions.

"Oh," says lovely girl-friend, model Jane Lumb. "Ohyou shouldn't say that, itsounds terrible."

"Yes, but it's true.""But you should say you

like material things becausethen you can get all the nicethings in life through them,like happiness."

"Well that's what I mean."He does in fact enjoy work

tremendously. He feels the

YOU MIGHT suppose that theBritish, one of the world's lastbelievers in the monarchic system,would welcome an emperor withopen arms. The trouble is thatMichael Pasternak is a pretender.Mr. Pasternak, alias EmperorRosko, revealed this week theremarkable fact that he tapes allhis Radio 1 Saturday shows fromParis not because he is so busyin the French capital, but becauseour Home Office hasn't given hima permit to work here as a deejay.

"I have a permit to be a recordproducer in Britain, but when itcomes to applying for a deejaypermit the attitude is always:'Why give an American a jobwhen an Englishman can do it?' "he alleges.

So Rosko has to stew in Paris,unhappily aware that he has nochance to expand his empire be-yond a measly 60 minutes a weekwhich aren't even heard all overBritain because his show is notbroadcast on Radio 2. "I must bethe only deejay who only gets heardon Radio 1. A large portion ofBritain can never have heard myshow."

Which explains why, despite be-ing the most colourful and publi-cised character when Radio 1 wasfirst launched, Rosko has sincebeen submerged by the enormousairtime enjoyed by the TonyBlackburns, Kenny Everetts andJohn Peels.

"That initial excitement aboutme was great, but it has wanedand naturally I'm a bit dis-appointed. There are some thingshappening for me, however, soI'm not that brought down. Week-end TV want me to do a series.I imagine they could pull a workpermit for me, simply becausethey seem to express more interestin me than the BBC."

"As a group really we'requite ancient. I mean peoplelike Status Quo are reallyyoung, like kids, in compari-son to us. And the other dayI was talking to Marmadaleand they were saying howthey'd collected all our re-cords and remembered usplaying a date in Glasgowonce - and that REALLYmade me feel old!

"I think the reason we'vealways done well is thatpeople have always accepted

us. It's funny: we've alwaysdone anything we've wantedto-and got away with it.

"In four years we've movedfrom having no image at allto going hippie and now beingvery straight. We're going inthe right direction now. We'vegot out of the idea that every-thing we record has to be

got away with it'

our own material. For in-stance 'Listen To Me' waswritten by Tony Hazzard andwe recorded it simply becauseit was much better than any-thing we'd written our-selves."

If the Hollies have a prob-lem at all just now, it's time.

slightly rotund and supremely self-assured young man, that Radio Imight, perhaps, feel that the Bri-tish public couldn't put up withhis hectic American hustling voicefive days of the week.

Several Radio I deejays havesecretly dismissed Rosko's presen-tation as not being particularlyclever. One very famous deejay,in fact, once remarked to me: "Allof us could put over our showslike he does. There's nothingclever about shouting your headoff and making up little rhymesto introduce records."

"Well, the deejays have neversaid any of this to my face," re-plies Rosko. "But if that's whatsome of them say behind my back,all I can say is that half of themcouldn't even run a radio boardwhen they first came in, anyway.

"Actually, I never used to hearRadio 1. Now I hear it in flashesfor I'm spending much more timeover here, producing records. Myopinion of the deejays is thatthey're very English. I like DaveCash and David Symonds becausethings seem to happen on theirshows. Of the others, I don't likeKenny Everett but I can see why

he is happening, and as for Tony'Blackburn . . . well, it must befantastic to have 20 million peoplelistening to you.

"Really, though, I would saythat what the station really needsis British -born but American -trained deejays. If deejaying is be-ing taken as seriously as it seems,the BBC should be sending squadsof today's teenagers to the Statesto train them to take over onRadio 1 tomorrow."

Rosko holds American deejaysin such high esteem that he isconvinced Radio England - theAmerican pirate station whichnever really got off the ground-could have been the No. 1 piratestation instead of London andCaroline. "Their deejays overdidthe high-speed talking. If they'dbeen a bit cooler they could havehad it made. Like me-I try toreach a happy medium where mypresentation is just over the limitto be noticed."

He talks so much hotair you don't know how much ofwhat he says is serious. We'll justhave to wait and see whether hisplans come off.

"It means a lot to me tobe able to look round andthink this is all mine. I get agreat kick out of makingmoney.

"To be honest I don't knowif the rest of the group investtheir money and have such athing about accumulating itas I have.

"We went through a stageof seeing less and less of eachother at one time. But nowit's levelling out. We wentround to Allan's party onSaturday and Graham cameround to dinner on Sunday.

"Graham and I will prob-ably go into some businessdeal together soon.

"I love doing more andmore things. There was a timewhen if I wasn't playing withthe group I just used tostagnate.

"If you let it your mindcan go to sleep when you'rein this business. You can justsit when you're working andthink 'Well what wall can Ipaint now?'

"I know the group's muchhappier now. Of course thereare things we still all want todo and we'll get round todoing them.

"We've changed a lot andwe're in the position nowwhere things really couldn'tbe better."

And anotherrevolutionbegun bythe BeatlesAN entirely new art form has blossomed in the past

couple of years. Not that you can see examples of itin the Tate Gallery or even in those open-air art showsalong the Thames in London-for the form is confined toalbum covers and the only place you're likely to see acomprehensive show is your local record store.

A lot of people would place "Sgt. Pepper," the Beatles' all-time revolutionary album of last year, as the beginning point,when LPs became something more than bits of plastic in a coverdesigned purely to keep the dust out of the grooves.

With "Sgt. Pepper" and its cut-out card, its lyrics printed in theirentirety and its fascinating front cover which you can spend hourswith trying to identify all the faces, the record industry suddenly re-alised that an album can be an experience of all the senses ratherthan the purely aural (ear) kind.

Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, the husband and wife who are practi-cally synonymous with "pop -art" in Britain, have a lot to answer for.

'Before their brilliant job on"Sgt. Pepper," too many 'LPsleeves were tatty bits of cardboardwhich were best neither seen norheard; now the danger is, withsleeves becoming more and moreoutrageous, that the actual recordwill be neglected in favour ofmaking the thing look good.

Serious music -lovers, though,will have noticed the change longbefore even the Beatles' superbeffort. Two years ago Love's firstalbum featured an excellent coverwith super colour pictures bothon the back and the front.

Nice-but the point was that if

you somehow moved the coverabout near a red light the name"Love" was seen to jump abouton the picture in defiance of allknown natural and physical laws.

Love is on the small but ultra-high quality Elektra label, andElektra records are now nearlysynonymous with outstandingcovers.

Elektra has, been going in theStates for 17 years, ever since JacHolzman started it as a means ofgetting through college.

"Jac says that the pride ofownership of an album shouldstart as soon as the record -buyerhas the album in his hands," ex-plained Clive Selwood, Britishboss of Elektra. "You can't separ-ate the record from the cover-it's all the same thing."

Now Elektra are thinking fran-tically of the next idea for LP

sleeves. What, they're not quitesure yet-but we do know thatthe new Incredible String Bandalbum, "Wee Tam And The BigHuge," features pictures whichwere taken in Frank Zappa's backgarden!

Mr. Zappa himself is the excep-tion which proves most recordcompanies' Golden Rule NumberOne: groups must never, in nocircumstances, be allowed to de-sign their own sleeves.

Zappa does, but he's the excep-tion to every rule. All fourMothers' albums were master-pieces of graphic art-particularlythe American versions, which areall double gatefolds and were de-signed by Zappa as curios of theweird and bizarre.

But otherwise, groups who hap-pily assume that they can do amuch better job on their ownsleeves than the professionals arethe bane of most companies.

"It's amazing how many groupshave friends at art school whoproduce their sleeve designs," said29 -year -old John Hays, in chargeof all sleeve designs for CBS.

"Their designs are often veryimaginative-but the artwork isusually atrocious and they're some-times impossible to produce."

For a group like the MoodyBlues, though, whose "In SearchOf The Lost Chord" must be oneof the best LPs of the year, thecover is of paramount import-ance. "The cover is the showcasefor what's inside," said thegroup's Mike Pinder.

"Our cover was just what wewanted. We know this artist,Philip Travers, who mainly doessleeves for classical records. Weplayed him some tracks and toldhim what we thought it was allabout and then he came up witha picture.

"Somehow his colours on thesleeve are the same colours asour music."

As groups become ever moreconscious of what their recordsshould look like, cover designscan only get further and furtherout. After all, we've ALREADYhad:

Hendrix in the style of anIndian religious poster ("AxisBold As Love"); Country JoeAnd The Fish, who gave awaycopies of "The Fish Game" (asort of psychedelic ludo) with "1Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die";Who's Roger Daltrey sitting in abath of baked beans ("The WhoSell Out").

A completely black coverwhich, if you look very carefully,has a black -on -black picture (Vel-vet Underground); a round coverlike a giant tobacco tin (SmallFaces); a painting which lookslike the result of a schizophrenic'sart class (Grateful Dead).

Jethro Tull made up to lookfifty years older ("This Was");the Rolling Stones in 3-D; Jeffer-son's strange Airplane ("AfterBathing At Baxter's"); Spirit withone face made up of bits from thefaces of each member of the group.

Where will it all end? So far,only Bob Dylan has had the cour-age to get out of the rut-thecover of his million -selling "JohnWesley Harding" was a dismal,colourless grey all over!

Pop Scene: Mary Hopkin and all thatsort of scene is good, but the Ohio Ex-press and that lot I don't like at all.I don't understand it. I think there'sroom for improvement all round.

Marriage: I wouldn't get married yet,I haven't thought about it.

I left schoolwhen I was 15 because it was tooheavy doing TV work as well.I met the Bee Gees in Sydneywhen we all did a TV show in1962 and from then on we werefriends and I used to play on theirrecords and they on mine and weall made a lot of flops together.

How formed:I wanted Grahamto come out to Australia, but thenhe wrote saying why didn't I

come to England again and join his group.went because the scene in Australia

is a drag at the moment, you have tofollow and copy you can't make it asan individual.

Career highlight: Being on Top ofthe Pops.

Pop scene: I like the scene whereeverybody can do their own material-where kids play on their own records andnot have to get session musicians.

Marriage: I don't think I will for awhile.

Politics: I haven't really got any ex-citing ideas about them.

and to create the same sort of stir in theworld that the Beatles have done. It'sa little ambitious, but this is my ambition.When I first heard the Procol Harumrecord I thought they'd done it, but theydidn't follow it up.

MARBLES, up 10 places to No. 18 with "Only OneWoman" make their first public appearance on a four -dayIrish tour from October 31 - November 3, and return forGranada's "Discoteque" on November 5.

Boys are at present putting down tracks for their firstalbum, being produced by Barry Gibb. Among six so farcompleted are the Bee Gees songs, "I Can't See Nobody"and "To Love Somebody." Some of these tracks were infact produced by former manager Gibson Kemp, who isnow working in Hamburg.

Marbles also cut their follow-up single next week. It willeither be a Bee Gees original or one of their own songs.

SUNDAY NIGHT FROST and not a deepdiscussion or a politician in sight. It's funnight, with sketches involving regulars RonnieBarker and Ronnie Corbett, lots of corny jokesfrom David Frost, and the whole concoctionpeppered with musical items. All a bit end-of-the-pierish, but nevertheless, family entertain-ment-and good!

But the PRESENTATION of the music stinks.The technical crew responsible obviously haveThursday and Friday "discussion" nights off pat,but when it comes to Sunday's "live" music sound-forget it. Over the last few weeks there have beensome terrible blunders.

The Deep Purple, a beautiful, Cream -type group,came across sounding like Ivy Benson, and ifthere are backing girls on an arrangement, as inDeena Webster's "Scarborough Fair" (even if theydo sound ready to be pensioned off), let's at leastHEAR them. And from an artist's point of viewthe music is the most important thing. Both Engel-bert and Dusty couldn't hear the band, missedtheir entrance cues and suffered dismally.

To an average viewer, it looks as though it's thesinger's incompetence - how arethey to know about "fold -back,""feed -back" and the hang-ups of"live" sound in a TV studio? Butit's unforgivable that any TV com-pany still hasn't solved the prob-lems of positioning the artistsnear enough to the band or to thespeakers and/or aren't employingsound engineers who are sympa-thetic and familiar with commer-cial, modern music.

And, all music has a mood,which is hard enough to putacross, anyway, when the soundis lacking, but it's virtually im-

possible if you're a singer stuckin the middle of a vast arena,which looks like the Palais afterclosing time, with every light inthe place turned on full blast, sothat you expect Mrs. Mopp toarrive any minute.

Eartha Kitt coped magnificently,hut even she, amid a canopy ofhired candelabras, or slinkingseductively on a couch, was ham-pered by football stadium lighting.It's a pity there aren't moreartistes like Miss Kitt though, 'cosher camera technique is faultlessand, like her or not, she's one ofthe world's greatest entertainers-in every sense of the word.

But I'm really curious and alittle worried about whoever booksthe "supporting" acts. SochaDistel is fine for a time and place,but on a supposedly topical pro-gramme he is positively prehistoric-or at least his choke of material

Who's vintageBus'-drivingfor the chartIF YOU, madam, were one of the elderly ladies who hada buckshee bag of crisps thrown at you from a 1912 omni-bus in London last week and enjoyed the experience, youcould show your gratitude by getting your grand -daughterto go out and buy the Who's new single, "The Magic Bus."

Because those crisps came through the courtesy of the Whowhen they drove round 'Dilly and other London landmarks inthis vintage bus with a few friends, a lion, a baby elephant anda parrot.

It was all part of a big promo-tion campaign by the boys to get"Magic Bus" high into the chart.Failure to do so would hardlyhave them heading to the bank-ruptcy courts but they are deter-mined to have a hit again aftersuffering a first -ever flop with theirlast release, "Dogs."

"It was all basically our ownfault," said their singer, RogerDaltrey, on one of those rareoccasions when he deputises forthe excellent, articulate PeteTownshend as spokesman for thegroup. "We went away to theStates just as we released it so itgot no real promotion.

"It wasn't a particularly bad re-cord and although we do want tohave a hit with `Magic Bus,' wedon't really think of singles as allthat important now. You onlyhave to look at the chart to realisethat. Who's buying `Little Arrows'I'd like to know. We wouldn'twant our name associated withthose record buyers.

"It seems obvious that the kidsare only interested in albums thesedays with singles so expensive.And we're all getting very excitedabout the new album we're work-

ing on at the moment. It'll be asort of pop opera in that a story -line runs right through the full 16tracks."

That storyline is certain to en-rage the Mrs. Whitehouses of thisworld. But let Mr. Daltrey dis-close the grisly tale. "Well, it'scentred on a deaf, dumb andblind kid and his reactions tothings that ordinary people regardas bad. For example, in one song,he gets seduced by his uncle. Andwhereas we would say: *What adirty old man,' to the kid it's justa new experience. We're not reallysetting out to put across a messagealthough I suppose you could saywe're showing that nothing can betotally bad. There's good some-where in everything."

The album will be out just be-fore Christmas - an excellent pre-sent it promises to be for all inthe post -teenybopper age group-and, as usual, Mr. Townshend canclaim most of the composingcredit. Roger Daltrey, indeed, mustbe well-nigh unique in that al-though he is lead singer of theWho the spotlight always seemsto be on Pete Townshend. Itdoesn't disturb him in the slightest

And this week's Gerard Setymight well be fine in his ownenvironment, but on Frost wasworse, and certainly more ernbar-rasing and less funny, than thecommercial breaks. Though, ofcourse, it is the time of theOlympics, it's pushing your luckto unearth a group called theMexicans just to prove it. Oh dear.

What really bugs me is that Irate David Frost and feel he's oneof the few people who knowwhere it's all at. He comes upwith the greatest TV interviewscoops and has on not only thebiggest and best names in enter-tainment, but some of the besteither unrecognised or unknowntalent, too. So how on earth canhe allow the whole thing to beso badly loused up by dated,stuffy booking and presentation?David Frost is what's happeningin current affairs, but his Sundaynight show smells of mothballs.

and, as if to emphasise the fact,Mr. Daltrey now leads the life ofa virtual recluse, holed up in theBerkshire countryside and happyto be away from London whenthere is no work to be done.

"I'm not egotistical. If you en-joy what you're doing you don'tneed the limelight. And we reallydo enjoy playing these days. Thestage act is a lot more heavy-it's more like a jam session.

"We've got out of the stage ofgoing to a date and thinking, 'Oh,let's get it over with, get ourmoney and split,' and now weplay on for as long as we like.Like last week at London'sRoundhouse, we were supposed todo a 45 -minute set and I supposewe stayed there playing for morelike two hours."

Mr. Daltrey also had somethingto say on the suggestions that"Magic Bus" is too similar to theirold smash, "My Generation."

"Certainly it was written in the`Generation' period and we cameacross the tape the other day quiteby accident and found we liked it.But I can't see any real compari-son. The whole subject of the songis completely different."

BROOK Benton's "Do YourOwn Thing," despite the title,

SPRINGFIELD PARKNEVER An Everyday Thing(CBS)-I must start by sayingthis isn't the sort of record Igo mad about-but but but-shrewdness is all and I foreseethis doing very well indeed.

It's on the same scene asMarmalade and Love Affair,with a very good solid produc-tion behind it. In fact the pro-duction just saves the song, thatWayne Fontana did, from be-ing ordinary and the groupthemselves induce a lot ofstrength into the vocal.

Verdict is then that it's anordinary song given a hit treat-ment. Which, is I suppose, allthat counts:

Of course, we've had a long, long wait and, to be honest,maybe this sounded a great deal more shattering than it actu-ally is simply because it is something that woke me up fromslumber. Anyway it's good, competent Hendrix stuff. Verytight, solid interpretation of the song Dylan wrote and theNashville Teens did a good job on. His fans will be eager tobuy it. OUT TOMORROW

"Things You Do" by CaseyAnderson is a sort of "LittleGreen Apples." He has a nicesincere voice and the words arepretty (Reprise).

I liked the Tages "HalyconDays." Nice production (MGM).

They've re-released the Cham-bers Brothers' "Time Has ComeToday" in its extended form. VeryHendrix -like word delivery (Direc-tion).

Like Roly Daniels' voice. Des-pite its title "Love Is A Sym-phony" is quite pretty. But hecould do better on somethingmore worthwhile (CBS).

JUDY CLAY ANDWILLIAM BELLPRIVATE Number (Stax) -Judy Clay used to sing withBilly Vera. Now she teams upwith William Bell. I don't knowwhether it's just me but I'mveering towards these sort ofduo records very strongly.

They sing beautifully -per-haps a bit too smoothly andnot desperate enough for me-but it's the production thatreally takes the prize. Lovely.Not a hit but then we can'thave everything.

T'S taken a week nowfor my nerves to berestored to normal. Asthe memories of that

fateful day at the BBCrecede, so the butterfliessubside. But as a miserablyfailed disc jockey, I amwiser. Never, never againwill I scoff at a new DJ, Heor she, has my undyingsympathy.

The BBC is awe-inspiringenough under normal circum-stances. It is huge, powerfuland even the telephones havefour -figure extension numbers.The morning I arrived outsidethe vast headquarters in Lang -ham Place, London, it seemedto have doubled in its ominousmajesty. Clutching my patheticscript and choice of nine re-cords that seemed more unsuit-able with every step, I foundmy way through the rabbitwarrens to the producer's office.

I was early. Half an hour early.I hadn't been early for anythingfor weeks. A sympathetic secre-tary brought me coffee, and 1 satand waited for the programme pro-ducer to leap dragon -like throughthe door. As each minute tickedby, both script and records seemedmore ridiculous. I had decided todo a late -night programme, whichI thought would be more suitedto a girl's voice.

I had doggedly decided to intro-duce them with "Green Onions"by Booker T and the MG's. Itwas a favourite tune and I feltstubborn about it. The rest of theselection was slow, what I con-sidered to be late -night stuff, in-cluding the new Herb Alpertsingle, Joe Cocker, Jose Felicianoand a track from Buffy SainteMarie's LP.

I was knee deep in cigaretteends and coffee cups when AidanDay appeared. Producer of StuartHenry's programme, he regardedmy ordeal as something of a jokeand it wasn't until five o'clock thatafternoon that his mirth changedto utter despair.

He agreed with my choice of alate night show, as he said therewas then a higher proportion of

The choice of music is yours, but the teamof judges, headed by Radio I stars Keith

Skues, Ed Stewart and Stuart Henry, willbe listening very carefully, not only to thechoice of records, but to the way they arepresented and the all-important words yousay between each one.

The judges will choose the tape-recordingwhich, in their considered opinion, show themost promise. And the winning tape goesbefore the Radio I audition panel, headed bystation boss Robin Scott. They will listencarefully again and . . . well, you could bewell on your way to a regular Radio I show.

Remember: The programme you decideon must run for NO MORE THAN FIF-TEEN MINUTES IN ALL, and must berecorded at either 31 r.p.s. or 71 r.p.s.

My choice of records, he said,was too slow when takenaltogether and would send themost ardent male listener straightto sleep. Alas, "Green Onions"was scrapped and the show beganwith the first record, "Listen ToMe" by the Hollies.

It was important to start off theshow with a reasonably livelynumber to catch the listeners'attention.

The remaining records were cutdown to only five-Jose Feliciano's"Light My Fire," Joe Cocker's"With A Little Help From MyFriends," Buffy Sainte Marie's"Piney Wood Hills" and finallythe B-side of Dusty Springfield'snew record, "The. Colour Of YourEyes." .

Along to the record library forthe records, then down to studioL.I in the bowels of the BBC.Two nonchalent studio techni-cians greeted us, Aiden becameeven breezier and brisk. Losingany feigned composure I waspushed into the studio and sat ata table, facing the other threesilently and goldfishlike throughthe window separating studio fromcontrol room.

Studio L.1 is designed for com-fort and relaxation. For somestrange reason it has thick car-peting, armchairs, settee and tablelamps. I felt neither comfortedor relaxed, but like some spy in

a Russian sitting room surroundedby hideous bugging devices, andmesmerised by a large micro-phone suspended over my nose.

The Hollies record went on.The first few bars of song, thenabout seven seconds of instru-mental in which time I had toopen my "show," introduce my-self, come out with some appro-priately bright comment and thenfade out "with the Hollies" as theystarted to sing again. The greenlight went on (a signal that youin the studio are audible andtherefore to start talking). Thecombined effect of that, the micro-phone and frantic signallingthrough the glass partition fromAidan was too much.

My suitably low-pitched latenight voice soared to a shrillfalsetto, I stammered, I gabbledand finished my introduction inthree seconds flat.

Aidan had long since thrownmy script away, saying that ascript always sounded strained,and I was to "chat naturally."What a hope. After five attempts,and cutting my speaking rate towhat sounded a ludicrously slowspeed, I managed to give areasonably comprehensible intro-duction. Then a red light went onwhile the record played-a signalthat you can crash around thestudio unheard by fifty millionlisteners.

Then followed a nightmare ofred light, green light, and Aidantearing his hair out. After theHollies record finished I back -introduced it, then talked over

the long instrumental introductionto Jose Feliciano.

Chat between these three recordswas quite easy. Just a bit of in-formation and opinion about therecords. With . Joe Cocker's "ALittle Help From My Friends,"the long introduction was cut andI had to signal a split secondbefore I finished talking so thatthey could come straight in withhis voice.

Aidan pointed out that the mostimportant part of the show was myintroduction and the way I signedoff with the last record, and itwould be these bits that the audi-tion panel would be listening for.A big mistake, he said, was totalk too much and oversell your-self-all that was necessary at thebeginning was to introduce your-self, welcome listeners to the showand tell them (in the case of alate show) to relax, etc.

And at the end just to sign off,and in the case of my last record-"The Colour Of Your Eyes" -I used the title as a line of chatto leave the show, hopefully, on arelaxed late night note. Thus, theshow got off to a fairly fast startand gradually slowed down in pacewith slower records until it tailedoff with "Colour Of Your Eyes."

My faults became painfullyobvious at the play -back of thetape. Although I considered I hadslowed down my speaking voicesufficiently it was still too fast,showing my lack of confidenceand making listeners most uneasy.

As for the voice itself, what Ihad imagined to be suitably low
