The music on this recording marks a special reunion, a rare live duo performance of David “Dawg” Grisman and Tony “T” Rice, who started an acoustic music revolution in the Bay Area in the late 1970s with the original David Grisman Quintet. For people around the band, like myself, they were known as the “Gasoline Brothers”—a nickname Tony started using while recording the first Quintet album, when their playing was so hot they were about to explode. There was a correctness to the sound. They complemented each other so well, one of those rare pairings that share a certain chemistry, an inner clock, a way of hearing and interacting musically that few musicians have.
The next release by the “Gasoline Brothers” was Tone Poems, a duet project showcasing historical vintage instruments, released in 1994. By that time “Dawg” and “T” were living legends, steeped in tradition while carrying their musical torches together into uncharted territory. There were precious few live shows in support of Tone Poems. including one I was lucky to attend in Carmel, California!
This recording from 1997 is a mixture of tunes from Tone Poems along with some bluegrass and jazz classics mixed with dawg originals. The “Gasoline Brothers” were certainly on fire this night. This might be the only duet recording of “Dawg’s Rag”, or Tony’s “Devlin’” and it’s a treat to hear Grisman playing mandola on his “Opus 38”. These giants of acoustic string music are in top form here and the recording is so good it’s just like when I used to stand a few feet away, listening to them rehearse backstage with “Dawg” in one ear and “T” in the other. Now that folks, is what your ears are made for and what I consider perfect stereo!
