Expected outputs include: (1) DRR education shall be conducted in schools, after schools, and communities; and (2) DRR activities at these different locations are interconnected, always with a child-centered focus. Four important stakeholders were identified for SC to work with: schools, after-schools, communities, and the municipal government. SC aims to connect these different stakeholders, while also conducting activities with individual stakeholders. Activity Snapshot The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami provided important lessons on what needs to be done to reduce disaster risks. Founded on information collected in interviews conducted by Save the Children staff after the disaster, a supplementary textbook on disaster risk reduction, and a card game were developed in collaboration with an NGO, Plus-Arts. DRR educational materials developed by SC have been submitted to boards of education for adoption and teacher training workshops in the use of these materials were conducted in Miyagi prefecture. The teachers who participated in the workshop believed the materials enable children to think, make decisions and take actions for protecting their lives during disaster impacts. SC works together with schools and local Self-Help Disaster Prevention Associations to plan and implement annual city wide earthquake and tsunami drills in collaboration with City of Higashimatsushima, in order to ensure that children play active roles in drills. SC provided high school students with training on how to use the DRR educational material. Students trained were encouraged to teach their peers and learn child-to-child method to enable them to support primary school children at after schools.
