When these shock waves hit the surface, the earth shakes. This is called an

earthquake.

(2) What(2) What(2) What(2) What is an Aftershock? is an Aftershock? is an Aftershock? is an Aftershock?

Earthquakes are not limited to just one shock. After large earthquakes more

shocks will take place. These are called “aftershocks”. There are times when

aftershocks are as strong as the “main earthquake”.

The "Tokai Earthquake" is a large scale earthquake predicted to hit a large

swathe of land, including Gifu prefecture, in the near future. In the past, every

100 to 150 years, a highly destructive earthquake has occurred in the Tokai area,

covering areas such as Aichi, Shizuoka and Gifu prefectures. The Tokai earthquake

could come at any time.

earthquake are coming. An announcement from the Meteorological Agency will be put

out in the areas expected to be struck by large shocks.

The time between the announcement, that a strong earthquake has been detected

in the area and the start of the earthquake is only a few to tens of seconds.

Emergency earthquake information is broadcast on television and radio, and

can be received on mobile phones, which receive emergency earthquake information

automatically.

The warning will be made through TV, radio, the internet, local

outdoor speaker systems and others.

◇Bus and train services, along with car traffic will be partly
