DISABILITY SENSITIZATION OATH

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES 01

I solemnly pledge that I will always respect for the people with disabilities and will

awaken the awareness in and around of my circle to eliminate discrimination against them.

I will always strive to bring people with disabilities in mainstream in order to get their independence living through the Advocacy and through Empowerment.

People with disabilities have the equal human rights for which I will put my immense e�orts to get it done for them.

I also pledge that I will Advocate and Educate people around me and in my family to create a barrier free environment where in people with disability can live with their total Reverence,

Dignity, with the Accessibility and with their own Desires.

I will always be the follower of the Ideology that Societies are never consummated without the Inclusion of PWDs.

To undertake sensitization process in the society with state and citizens, Dar ul Sukun launched a campaign “Disability as Diversity” in May 2016, Goals of the campaign are parallel to the Sustainable Development goals particularly Goal number 4,8,11,16,17 with the Promotion of an inclusive, barrier-free and rights-based society for Persons with Disabilities in Sindh.

Dar ul Sukun leads the way in dedicated services to the Persons with Disabilities nationwide even the United Nations has acknowledged Dar ul sukun as the only organization of Pakistan working to strengthen the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and published the announcement of event on International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) at United Nation's official website. Building a sustainable inclusive world for all requires the full engagement of people of all abilities.

The 2030 agenda includes many issues of concern to Persons with Disabilities and we must work together to transform these commitments into actions.

Society trusts Dar ul Sukun as we maintained transparency and involves them in decision making. Dar ul Sukun provided the target groups capacity building training that they required to work in the field. The projects of Dar ul Sukun are not for profit, but to fulfill the needs of Persons with Disabilities while working with them which is priceless for us. Together with Persons with Disabilities, we can move our world forward by leaving no one behind.

SUMMARY

Person with Disabilities are one of the largest invisible and side- lined minority group of the world; comprised of 15% of the world’s total population. From many decades Person with Disabilities has been facing many barriers like discrimination, attitudinal barrier, no health and educational opportunities etc. In recent decades the approach of the world has been changed, conceding the rights of person with disabilities in the society.

On 14th October 1992, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Disabled Persons to be celebrated every year on 3rd December all around the globe. In 2007, the name was changed to International Day of Persons with Disabilities which was first used in 2008.

Transforming the Lives- Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development focuses on “Leaving No One Behind” which is not attached to any sustainable development goal but sits above all SDG goals. It concentrates on the inclusion and equitable rights and opportunities for all. Its core elements are people, planet, peace, prosperity and partnership.

To accomplish this Inclusive Society Dar ul Sukun celebrated a whole week with Children and Person with Disabilities and organized following Events for the Children with Disabilities:

• Disability Talk “Leaving No One Behind”• Wheelchair Distribution• Talent Show by Children of Dar ul Sukun• PARA- Sports Event “Sports For All”

The whole week was dedicated for the Children with Disabilities and an Inclusive gathering and ceremonies were held along with esteemed guests and individuals from different walks of life.

INTRODUCTION

United Nations observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities annually with a diverse and inimitable theme. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the Future We want”; building up a mainstream and all-encompassing world for the Person with Disabilities. The theme focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals given by the United Nations to be achieved till 2030. It also includes assessing the current status of Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (CRPD) in Pakistan for the better inclusion in the near future.

Dar ul Sukun from 1969 has been working for the protection and rehabilitation of Person and Children with Disabilities. Dar ul Sukun believes on the Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities and is functioning on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) this year launched Campaign in March 2016, “Diversability- Disability as Diversity”, which is a disability sensitization and advocacy campaign and also serves as a tool to strengthen the SDGs in Pakistan.

This theme focuses on the following Goals for the Person with Disabilities to be achieved by 2030:

• Goal 4: It focuses on Inclusive and Quality Education• Goal 8: It endorse sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.• Goal 10: It aims to create an awareness among the several masses of the world not to discriminate between human beings on any ground and even disability.• Goal 11: It emphasizes to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe and sustainable.• Goal 16: This goal promotes just, peaceful and inclusive societies.• Goal 17: It believes to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. On the occasion of International Day of Person with Disabilities- 3rd December 2016, Dar ul Sukun and Managing Director of Bait ul Mal Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh distributed wheelchairs among the Person and Children with Disabilities under the goal 11 of SDGs along with a Talent Show by the Children of Dar ul Sukun to showcase an inclusive congregation.

In the evening of 3rd December 2016, Dar ul Sukun arranged a unique Event “Disability Talk- Leaving No One Behind” at Marriot Hotel, Karachi which was the obvious evidence of an Inclusive Society.

The theme “Leaving No One Behind” is an unambiguous meaning of Inclusion and a society where each and everyone must have their own rights and freedom and nobody should be left at the rear. Dar ul Sukun, through this theme aims to increase awareness among the people about Disability and to make them sentient about the success stories of Person with Disabilities despite the barriers of society.

The Disability Talk also showcased the Sustainable Development Goals through Audio/ visual on which the team of Dar ul Sukun has been working from last 6 months. Dar ul Sukun also organized a Para- Sports Event with the title “Sports for All” for the Children with and without Disabilities. It was a daylong event to enhance and boost the health of Children with Disabilities and to make people aware that Children with Disabilities also have interest in the Outdoor activities.

The United Nations has acknowledged Dar ul sukun as the only organization of Pakistan working to strengthen the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and published the announcement for our upcoming event on International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) at United Nation's official website.

Dar ul sukun, an organization for children and people with disabilities, senior citizens, and socially displaced girls and boys in Pakistan, will hold an Inclusive Gathering in the city Karachi, where approximately 650 people will gather and acknowledge the success and inspiring stories of the Persons with Disabilities. There will also be a showcase of the activities conducted through Dar ul sukun to strengthen the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The speakers will talk discuss Disability Sensitization, “Importance of Inclusion”, “Power of Giving” and “Hope”.

To exhibit the state and stakeholders and general population of Pakistan regarding the work DUS that has been done in the past 6 months from the launch of Diversability Campaign in March 2016; an audio/ visual was shown which was the evidence of the work DUS is doing to bring the Persons with Disabilities into mainstreaming.

The Event was glorified by the presence of our honorable Chief Guest Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh- (Managing Director Bait ul Mal) and by the Guest of Honors; Mr. Christopher Delima- (President Dar ul Sukun), Mr. Adnan Majeed- (Director Bait ul Mal- Karachi), Sr. Ruth Lewis- (Incharge Dar ul Sukun) and Mr. Morris Khurshid- (General Manager Dar ul Sukun), Dr. Shireen Mustafa Narijo- (Secretary Social Welfare Department- Government of Sindh), Mr. Shahid Mahmood Qureshi- (Program Associate Child Protection- UNICEF).

The Event started with the recitation from Holy Quran by Mr. Anwar Siddiqui – (Volunteer- Dar ul Sukun), verses from Holy Bible was delivered by Sr. Zita- (Branch Incharge for Socially Displaced Girls Dar ul Sukun) and for recitation of script from Holy Geeta by Mr. Vinesh Arya- (Physiotherapist at Dar ul Sukun) was invited to the podium.

Dr. Huma Baqai is a well renowned TV anchor; with PhD in International Relations she is serving as Director Communication and Public Affairs in IBA and is a political and foreign policy analyst. It was the honor to invite her as a keynote speaker of the event with the theme - Leaving No One Behind.

To make a Society in which all rights are equally distributed among all the citizens and no one is left behind due to any reason; was well said by our keynote speaker Dr. Huma Baqai. She highlighted the barriers Persons with Disabilities are facing in developed and developing parts of the world along with real life examples. She throws light on the issues because of which Persons with Disabilities are considered an unproductive part of society and they are ignored in ubiquitously.

Audio/ Visual production of the Dar ul Sukun’s effort for Sustainable Development Goal 4- Inclusive and Quality Education by UN was shown to the audience.

For the promotion of Goal 4, Dar ul Sukun has gone to many different Universities, Schools and Colleges to spread awareness among the youth and talk about the need of an inclusive society without discrimination.

Air Commodore Shabbir Ahmed Khan is the founder of Rashid Memorial Welfare Organization. The organization aims to eliminate illiteracy, eradicate poverty and provide healthcare facilities for poor and needy fellow citizens. He enlightened the audience on topic Well Done is Better than Well Said.

Mr. Shabbir Ahmed explained the importance of doing well and it will come back to you. He pointed out the behaviors of people towards the neglected part of society, especially Persons with Disabilities. He guided the audience that good deeds and good acts have no voice but a long term impact on the lives of people. So, don’t just say but do what you are saying because Well Done is Better than Well Said.

Exhibiting an Audio/ Visual presentation of the attempts of Dar ul Sukun on Sustainable Development Goal 8- Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth, Employment and Decent Work for All.

In order to eradicated poverty Dar ul Sukun has knocked the doors of many Corporate Sectors and have done efforts in making them aware about the 2% quota for Persons with Disabilities and the job opportunities for them.

MS. COOKIE LEWIS

Ms. Cookie Lewis is an inspirational and motivational speaker on disability and Special Educator as well. She is an inspiration for all. It was the privilege to invite her on the stage with the topic - Don’t Give Up.

Accept, Respect and Include persons with disabilities in our society, highlighted by Motivational Speaker and Special Educator Ms. Cookie Lewis who told the audience her life journey. She said that she was a day old baby when she came to Dar ul Sukun and they taught me everything.

Today she is 27 years old and she is a confident girl and voice for other marginalized and vulnerable children with disabilities. She gave the strong message of not to give up unless you succeed in life.

She said that Persons with Disability are considered as a curse; even in today’s world they are not included and mainstreamed. She faced a lot of difficulties while growing up.

Dar ul Sukun in order to strengthen the Goal 10 is working with different departments of Government in order to eradicate the stigma of discrimination or inequalities amonge the humans on the bases of race, ethnic, religion, color and even disabilities.

DR. SAIRA SALEEM

Dr. Saira Saleem is an inspirational speaker. Despite of having struggles in life she succeeded in her dream of being an Assistant Professor of Special Education in University of Karachi. To inspire the audience by her success story we invited Dr. Saira Saleem on stage with the topic - Blind World.

The world is blind not you if they are incapable of seeing your substance in you, phrased by visual impaired Dr. Saira Saleem while discussing her achievements personally and professionally with the audience. She discussed that after being born with a disability my family and relatives lost faith on me but I survived and completed my education with the dream of becoming a special educator. Despite of many hardships I traveled many parts of the world and was awarded with respect and dignity and today I am an Assistant Professor and a Special Educator.

After the influential message by the esteemed speaker the work of Dar ul Sukun on Sustainable Development Goal 16 by UN was showcased.

SDGs Goal 16: Promote Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Society

To promote the real meaning of SDG Goal 16, Dar ul Sukun has arranged many different events and seminars like Independence Day with the theme “Inclusive Pakistan” and turned the Universal Children’s Day as “Inclusive Universal Children’s Day”.

To give a new perspective on Especially Able Lives, we invited our 3rd Speaker who is an eminent and well known Journalist and Documentary Film Producer for National and International Media Houses, Ms. Sabin Agha.

Everyone on this Earth has been made with diversity and everyone is unique like fingerprints, noted Ms. Sabin Agha. She further elaborated that Persons with Disabilities are unique and have special lives and strength build in them. She gave the example of Ms. Gajra (Child of Dar ul Sukun) who despite of having polio and clutches on her leg walks all the way to the 7th floor of her house daily as her building doesn’t have a lift. She concluded by saying that we need to accept their especial lives and way of living to make them live a better life.

To make cities Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable is the Goal 11 of Sustainable Development Goal by UN. On this goal the work of Dar ul Sukun was showcased through an audio/visual.

To achieve this goal Dar ul Sukun organized the first ever Consultative Dialogue on 15th July 2016 in collaboration with UNICEF. The core element of the Dialogue was to build a disable friendly infrastructure and a society safe for person with disabilities.

Ms. Samira Sadiq is a young disability right activist and a motivational speaker with a deep understanding on Disability related issues. She has a Master’s degree in International Relation and works for Human rights. She is working as a Training Coordinator in Dar ul Sukun. She was invited on stage to give a thought provoking words on Disability and Deviance.

Society judges you on your visibility but will ignore the real you and if you do something out of the accepted norms of society then you will be tagged as deviant or Taboo, said by Ms. Samira Sadiq. She gave different examples about the society’s negative thinking towards Persons with Disabilities and how the deviant behavior of society leads to an end to the identity and talent of the Children with Disability.

A glance on the efforts of Dar ul Sukun on Sustainable Development Goal 17 by UN was exhibited in front of the audience.

Partnership is better than going alone. Dar ul Sukun believes in working with different International and National Organizations to make the lives of Persons with disabilities better. With this aim Dar ul Sukun has organized many Collaborative Trainings and Workshops to make a mainstream society.

Dr. Sanish Salman is an influential speaker and a disability right activist. She is a Social Entrepreneur and currently working as Head of the Rehabilitation and Manager- Events & Training – Dar ul sukun. She was invited to articulate Beginning of the End.

What matters is not how you end what actually matters is how you finish it because there is always a Beginning of the End, by Dr. Sanish Salman. She has drawn the attention of audience towards the real life scenarios of Children with Disabilities which she encounters at Dar ul Sukun and Society and how society treats them as they are born with an end but these children have special traits and strong courage which makes their every end a new and enlightened beginning.

she concluded with her closing remarks that if Person without Disabilities cannot construct Person with Disabilities then they have no right to destruct them.

In the end all 5 goals 4, 8, 11, 16 and 17 were showcased with the message that Dar ul Sukun has worked for the Person with Disabilities and will work in the coming future but now it’s time to join hands and do something for humanity.

The Event was puffed up by the beautiful song performance by the children of Dar ul Sukun representing Turkish Dance. They light up the stage from their Sufi Performance and gave the message of Love, Peace and Kindness to the audience.

Effects of poverty on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are enormous as poverty violates the fundamental human rights of PWDs as it deprives them the basic necessities of life, highlighted by Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh. He also mentioned the facts and figures regarding the current status of Persons with Disabilities, globally and in Pakistan and also explained the work done by the government of Pakistan and his team for providing all the facilities to PWDs living in Pakistan. He further said that the situation in rural areas is getting worse day by day and we will change the situation gradually and will provide equal opportunities to the Person with Disabilities.

In the end, he was awarded by the Shield as a Token of Appreciation for visiting Dar ul Sukun and giving us his precious time in making this event successful. A brief glimpse of Mr. Abid Waheed Sheikh and his team’s visit to Dar ul Sukun (Protection and Rehabilitation centre For Person and Children with Disabilities) and (Senior Citizens Home) was also showcased for the audience of the event.

Wheelchair is an effective equipment to enhance the mobility of Person with Disabilities but in a country like Pakistan there is unavailability of authentic statistics regarding wheelchair users and how many are in need to make their life better by using a wheelchair. The reason behind the unavailability of data is the absence of accurate number of Persons with Disabilities is living in Pakistan which by the help of a wheelchair can contribute in country’s economy. Dar ul Sukun believes in making a society in which people with diversity can survive with pride and confidence and therefore in order to increase the mobility Dar ul Sukun on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities distributed wheelchairs among PWDs in collaboration of Pakistan- Bait ul Mal.

Managing Director of Bait ul Mal- Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh distributed 100 wheelchairs among the Children and Persons with Disabilities. Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh also visited Dar ul Sukun and met each and every Child with Disability. Children warmly welcomed the guests and enjoyed the recreational event.

In the end of the event Sr. Ruth Lewis (Incharge-Dar ul Sukun) and Mr. Morris Khurshid (General Manager-Dar ul Sukun) presented a sheild in the remembrance of his visit to Dar ul Sukun, Karachi.

Dar ul Sukun is not only a centre for the protection, care and rehabilitation to the person with Special needs but also give them platforms to exhibit their talent and to make the world understand that they are also a productive and integral part of society who are still neglected.

To celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities Dar ul Sukun gave the unique platform to the children with disabilities to show their talent to the audience and the guests. There were dance performances by the Children of Dar ul Sukun; the children also performed an act on the Importance of Guidance in their lives. One of our visually impaired girls Anila sang the song in her melodious voice in front of the audience.

In the end, the stage was given to all the children of Dar ul Sukun and they all enjoyed and rejoiced their International Day which aimed to draw attention on marginalized population of Pakistan.

PARA SPORTS EVENT - SPORTS FOR ALL

Dar ul sukun believes in turning your walls into doors and is providing such platform to children with disabilities to make them realize their abilities and to overcome their obstacles and the best way is to organize a Sports Event for Children with Disabilities.

Sports is a healthy activity to enhance one’s talent and Dar ul Sukun provides a platform where children with and without disabilities can play and can do activities together. On International Day for Persons with Disabilities Dar ul Sukun organized an Inclusive “Para Sports Event- Sports for All” for the Children of Dar ul Sukun along with Children without disabilities who came to celebrate this event and they all enjoyed a lot.

The sports which were played were Cricket, Football, Ring games, Lemon Spoon, Throw Ball etc. The kids enjoyed the songs and danced on the beats as well. Overall, it was the unique event in itself as it gave the message of an Inclusive and Happy Society for Person with Disabilities.

The sports day ended with Prize Distribution Ceremony to the Children of Dar ul Sukun.

CONCLUSION

Dar ul Sukun believes in making the lives of Persons with Disabilities better and is burning the candle at both ends to provide them with all the facilities and rights to make a mainstream society. The aim of celebrating a whole week for Persons with Disabilities was to give them the importance and widen the understanding in the society about the etiquettes and protocols about disability.

Dar ul Sukun pays high gratitude to all the individuals, partners and team members and especially the team of Bait ul Mal and Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh in making the International Day of Persons with Disabilities successful and for spreading a smile on the faces of the Children and Persons with Disabilities.

Dar ul Sukun vows to support and help PWDs with a vision to make an inclusive, equitable and safe society under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) given by United Nations as Agenda 2030:

• To work for inclusive and quality education.• To establish inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and productive employment and decent work for all.• To reduce inequalities.• To work for inclusive and safe cities and infrastructure.• To promote peace, just and inclusive societies.• To strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
