Your AlcAN cOmpOsItes team

sustainability and environmental protection represent an increasingly important topic in advertising and visual communication. the increased environmental awareness and the demand for more sustainability are becoming essential criteria for buying decisions. Furthermore, in addition to the need for environmental compatibility, the demand for the company’s social and also overall economic involvement is increasing.

Environmental protection as an integrative component of sustainability management at Alcan sustainable involvement and the appurtenant sub-area environmental protection have long since been amongst the essential corporate objectives at Alcan. the minimisation of risks for man and environment as well as the reduction of environmental pollution through careful and efficient utilisation of resources is part of the corporate philosophy. Alcan is aware of its responsibility as a globally active enterprise, and has been an active campaigner in matters of sustainability for quite some time. sustainability manage-

ment at Alcan deals in depth with all three levels of sustainable action: the ecological, social and economic levels. In addition to concrete activities, Alcan endeavours towards transparent communication and seeks dialogue with all interest groups. Our responsibility for the environment: in the following fields of action we endeavour to implement the claim into practical reality!

Environmental management systems For quite some time our three display production sites in Germany and switzerland have been certified in accordance with IsO 14001, which establishes globally recog-nised requirements for environmental management. through this it is ensured that the environmental aspects will be taken into consideration with all daily tasks and corporate policy decisions. On the basis of uniform processes and structures we have hereby been able to anchor an environmentally appropriate behaviour in the company. We continually endeavour

to improve our behaviour through regular external audits. IsO certification is also an important criterion in our selection of suppliers.Furthermore, a strong linkage of management systems for quality (IsO 9001), environ-mental protection (IsO 14001) and occupational safety (OHAs 18001) is an important objective for us. the environmental protection tasks will be more strongly integrated in the operative sequences in this manner. these industry standards are incorporated corporate-wide in a management system in the realm of safety-health-environmental protection. the programme called into being in 2003 as a self-obligation comprises much more than compliance with standards and is particularly focussed on promoting responsible action of all employees in the realm of safety, health and environmental protection.

substancesIn the past few years, the discussion surrounding hazardous substances has increas-ingly gained in intensity and developed into a decision criterion not to be ignored amongst the customers.A comprehensive restructuring of european chemical policy is being undertaken with the current gradual entry into force of the ReAcH regulation. the main objective of the new regulation is the protection of human health and the environment. substances shall be uniformly evaluated with regard to their endangering potential for man and environment with this regulation.the abstention from hazardous processes and substances is our highest priority. Our substrates will be manufactured from raw materials which are harmless for man and environment. this is confirmed within the ReAcH regulation.

DIBOND® – chromium-free lacquers All lacquer recipes employed for DIBOND®, also the special colours, do not contain any heavy metals. these have been tested by an independent institute, and an appropriate certificate is available for our DIBOND® programme. Furthermore, extensive tests with competitive materials have revealed that quite a few products from competition contain heavy metals such as lead and chromium.

FOReX® – free from heavy metals the sheet materials of the FOReX® product family meet the requirements of the eU regarding the restriction of hazardous substances. FOReX® does not contain any of the following substances, which will be partially brought into connection with our products: lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium (VI), pBB (polybrominated biphenyl) and pBDe (polybrominated diphenyl ethers). Furthermore, our rigid foam sheets do not contain any formaldehyde, FcKW, silicon or softener (plasticizer??)

KApA® – certified coatings For our KApA® product range we exclusively utilise papers with sFI, peFc as well as Fsc certification, which comprises the preservation and improvement of the ecological, social and economic functions of forestry operations. All of the pulp papers we utilise are low-chlorine and oxygen bleached. Furthermore, even additives are entirely ab-stained from with a majority of papers.

FOAm-X® – coating made of recycled paper the paper coatings of our new FOAm-X® consist of 100 % recycled paper, which combined with a light foam core ensures high resource efficiency.

waste reduction and recycling the most possible environmentally compatible arrangement of the production phase represents another field of action. In this connection our focus lies on resource efficiency and the persistent avoidance of waste. the recycling of raw materials in the production process as well as the material utilisation of production waste has already been a common practice at our locations for years. the recycling rate for our most important raw materials (in terms of volume) in the production process lies at virtually 100 % here.

FOReX®: All cutting and trimming wastes must be collected according to variety for comprehensive recycling of raw materials in the production cycle. Wastes will be

re-granulated for treatment, and can be fed back into the production process again without quality losses.

DIBOND®: For recycling the valuable raw materials aluminium and polyethylene in the production cycle, the aluminium sheets will be separated according to variety in a technical process and processed for complete reuse. In addition to the comprehensive recycling on the production level, Alcan singen is the only manufacturer which also offers a self-contained (independent?) recycling concept for DIBOND® composite sheets for the end market (post-consumer wastes). In addition to the existing concept in Germany, in the beginning of this year we were also able to introduce a take-back concept for the UK with the help of our distributors. An expansion of this recycling concept to other countries is currently being examined.

KApA®: the accumulated production wastes will be fed as the best alternative to an recycling process with the objective of energy generation.

InnovationInnovation also plays a key role in our efforts for reduction of environmental pollution. We see the consideration of environmental aspects and the associated endeavour for resource efficiency as a fundamental part of our innovation strategy.Alcan composites can look back on a successful history as innovation leader in the increase of resource efficiency. For the most part, the success story of DIBOND®, FOReX® and KApA® products is founded on efficient utilisation as well as the intelligent combination of materials (foamed materials and composite materials). this leads to optimised product attributes with reduced resource utilisation. In the years to come we will endeavour to increase our innovative performance even more on the basis of a newly introduced innovation management system. In the future, we intend to meet the environmental requirements even stronger, especially in the realm of resource efficiency.

FOrEx® smart – the new generation of display substrates the development of FOReX®smart represents a resolute step in the direction of resource efficiency. FOReX®smart combines excellent display qualities (good printability, high colour rendition and flatness) with good mechanical properties as well as high sheet stiffness with extremely low weight. For instance, with regard to dimensional stability a 10 mm FOReX®smart sheet is comparable to a solid extruded sheet with a thickness of 6.7 mm — but with 70 % less weight!

Grow with responsibility! the fields of action explained here show one significant extract from the areas in which we endeavour to meet the demand for sustainability and environmental compatibility. ethically correct behaviour vis-à-vis man and environment is becoming a basic prerequisite for business enterprises. We are aware of this responsibility!

DIBOND®decor describes an aluminium composite sheet with a polyethylene core and various surfaces in wooden optic

– so far available in dark, trendy Wenge (African rosewood) and a light shade, maple. DIBOND®decor can be utilised in shop construction and shop design, but also in furniture construction, trade fair construction, at the point of sale or in the advertising technique field – i. e. wher-ever one also otherwise finds surfaces with wooden optic. But in comparison to real wood, DIBOND®decor is insensitive to moisture and temperature changes, and can therefore also be outstandingly utilised on a long-term basis at -50 °c to +80 °c for outdoor applications. Also advantageous: the dimensional stability! Wood “expands and contracts”, DIBOND® only to a very slight extent. Of course, the freedom from maintenance is a decisive advantage vis-à-vis real wood. No regrind-ing, painting, touching up – even with

long-term utilisation! three-dimensional applications are also easily doable with DIBOND®decor, since all

three-dimensional treatment methods known from DIBOND®, such as round bending, chamfering, form milling, milling edge technique and cutting are also pos-sible with DIBOND®decor. In particular, the ease of bending works – for instance with regard to round blank sheet, pillar linings or also for the production of furniture pieces

– represents a decisive advantage vis-à-vis real woods. A practical aspect: if pillars are to be lined with DIBOND®decor, it is enough to mill in the material, to transport it flat and to bring it into the appropriate form on the scene – very simply and without any auxiliary devices. With direct printing via silk screen and digital printing, DIBOND®decor shows the same proper-ties as DIBOND® in the standard version, and can thus be optimally utilised as an advertising medium. Another aspect: the low weight of DIBOND®decor (3.8 kg / m² with 3 mm thickness) vis-à-vis real wood (e. g. coniferous wood: 7.6 kg / m² with 20 mm thickness) also renders enormous advantages with handling, transport and during the mounting – DIBOND®decor saves money!

tIPs & trICksDIBOND®

For short-term connections or attachments which should be removable again, an adhesive band can be used for DIBOND®. For instance, the adhesive power of the bands is extremely good, so that even a 10 x 10 cm large strip is enough to attach sheets to the back wall of a trade fair stand. In addition, sheets will not be damaged during the dismantling, and can be utilised again if necessary. (Dual lock Band sJ 3560 from 3m).

FOrEx®classicAn object can be optimally clad with FOReX®classic, when FOReX®classic in 1 mm thickness is bent cold around the most varying constructions and adhered on the back side of the object.

kAPA®

KApA® sheets can also be shaped three-dimensionally with a few flicks of the wrist. First of all, a V-groove is cut in across the full length of the sheet with a mARtOR-Rillex knife by means of a mitre cut; the cut-out, separated strips are removed afterwards. Glue is then applied in the V-groove, and afterwards the sheet is manually chamfered over a table edge. excess glue is removed if necessary. Afterwards, the sheet holds a perfect 90° angle and can be utilised for decorative cubes, floors or stairs.

AlcAN cOmpOsItes also presents a highly decorative surface for indoors with DIBOND®stucco. this surface obtains its optic through a one-sided embossed cover sheet, which is polished and ano-dised after embossing. As a result of the embossing and the subsequent anodisa-tion, the surface is not only extremely hardwearing, but is also harmless in the utilisation with foodstuffs. this is why DIBOND®stucco – utilised selectively or two-dimensional – is

particularly suitable for shop design, wall cladding and interior work, bars and counters, or also for high-quality product presentations. For production-technical reasons the surface is coated on the back side. As a standard, the front side features a normal cover sheet lacquered in the standard aluminium metallic shade. With regard to the finish, DIBOND®stucco is to be utilised much like DIBOND® in the standard version – i. e. sawing, cutting, milling, chamfering, 3-D forming etc.

can be performed in outstanding fash-ion! On account of the surface structure, however, DIBOND®stucco is not suitable with regard to printing, laminating or cNc milling. Other parameters also result through the surface structure with regard to bond-ing and mounting. DIBOND®stucco was

“put through its paces” with regard to capability of being utilised and durability at the AlcAN cOmpOsItes euroshop trade fair stand, in which case we partially

set accents at the stand in the form of wall and floor sheets. the result after 5 days of high frequency utilisation was impressive: the floor sheets showed no traces whatsoever!

viscom Frankfurt 2008, from 30th October – 1st November

two years ago, Reed exhibitions created a europe-wide brand as-sociation under the umbrella name “viscom”, which in addition to Viscom now also encompasses the former “pro sign” in Germany. pro sign, which was held in the annual alternation to Viscom in Germany, will therefore be presented for the first time this year as

“viscom Frankfurt 2008”, and will be held from 30th October – 1st November 2008 at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre, hall 3.the trade fair’s exhibition spectrum ranges from sign making, light advertising and textile finishing via outdoor advertising to pOp presentation systems. since 2007, “digital signage” and “new innovative materials” have been the focal point of the trade fair. AlcAN cOmpOsItes Display europe will once again be taking part with well-known and new materials for these fields of ap-plication. Visit us in hall 3.0, stand Number B10, or at our live presentation in the trade fair’s demonstration area.

reklama 2008, from 11th – 14th November

Reklama, the largest trade fair for advertising and advertising technique in Russia, will be held for the 16th time in moscow from 11th – 14th November 2008. Over 350 firms will take part in the 2008 platform for New media, materials and technologies. AlcAN cOmpOsItes Display europe will also be represented with a stand (22B32) on the occasion of the Reklama, and will once again present new products for the advertising technique and shop design fields.more info is available at www.reklama-expo.ru/en

AlcAN cOmpOsItes was also once again “part of the show”…

… as the Euroshop 2008 was held at the end of February. Nearly 104 000 trade visitors once again obtained a com-prehensive overview of all important trends, amongst other things in the fields of shop construction and setup, architec-ture and store design, trade fair construc-tion and event – with 1 911 exhibitors and more than 107 000 square metres of exhibition area. In addition to the new developments and product launches, this time the AlcAN cOmpOsItes trade fair stand was also mirror-image per se for processing possibilities and utilisation of the complete product range.

the briefing was clear: first of all, the trade fair stand should be constructed from our own material. the goal of the second priority was to present the entire product range in a design-oriented cooperation

– everything aimed at the theme “3-D in shop Design”.

the result was impressive: style, elegance and three-dimensionality – with 100 % of the materials from AlcAN cOmpOsItes! A jet black, high-gloss rear wall made of DIBOND® was selected as the back-ground. strips of DIBOND® rose up from the stand floor (also black), which were transformed into dynamic waves on the upper end, and presented the material’s flexibility, workmanship and stability in an impressive way. the bending con-struction remained in shape without any attachment. No bending back, no loss of shape – this is dimensional stability! the material’s three-dimensionality, flexibility and versatility also continued in over-sized dynamic wave displays. Four and a half metre overall height and bent multiple radii with various DIBOND® surfaces at-tracted the interest of many trade visitors

and processors. this play was repeated in miniature form on the smaller presenters which were utilised on the trade fair stand as workstations and communication pools. Here one could clearly recognise how interesting, three-dimensional objects can be arranged, above all with the new surfaces in wooden optic.

the complete graphics in the form of hang-ing ceiling signs – with which a very good long-distance effect could be achieved

– was made of KApA®mount. KApA®mount was the first choice here, since the light-weight panels with aluminium-reinforced coatings without any substructure also withstands high temperatures over a longer period in the form of ceiling ele-ments, and remains in the original shape at the same time.

the wall graphics were printed directly, matching the design of the new FOReX®

smart in 5 mm thickness. the partially very filigree letterings and corporate logos were scroll-sawn true to detail and absolute exact from GAtORFOAm® in 25 mm thickness.

the tables comprised of FOReX®classic were also impressive for many visitors. Without any further add-on works, FOReX®

classic in 1 mm thickness was bent cold around a prefabricated wooden construc-tion and simply glued on the back side. the communication area was thus provided with a simple and robust creation, but above all with a surface that is insensitive to water and thus washable.

As part of the briefing, the trade fair stand was colourfully and stylishly separated into three accents – red, black and white. At the same time, the continuously uniform

colour system provided the necessary structure in order to present the variety of surfaces in a quiet setting. All surfaces of the product portfolio were finally able to be appropriately presented in their

own way and field of application. AlcAN cOmpOsItes was able to fall back on interesting impressions and valuable discussions in appropriate ambience with form, colour and functionality.

the company Kohlschein once again impressively proved which extensive possibilities KApA® offers with regard to processing on the occasion of the euroshop trade fair. the Kohlschein GmbH & co. KG is an owner-managed medium-sized enterprise that has been successfully active in paper and cardboard processing for 75 years now. In addition to production and trade of materials for print, display and advertising design, the longstanding AlcAN cOmpOsItes trad-ing partner and one of the largest dealers for the lightweight panel sector (KApA® and FOAm-X®) in Germany, also special-ises in the development of high-quality advertising media and displays as well as processing services.

the focal point of the trade fair concept from Kohlschein was the presentation of creative solutions for innovative advertis-ing at the point of sale – demonstrated with the help of potential application of utilisation possibilities for display and advertising purposes with materials from their own delivery programme. lav-ishly processed displays of high-quality mirror board were skilfully mounted on the stand construction and set in the scene for this purpose. In contrast to the iridescent colours of the displays, the stand – stylish and trend-conscious in white, as at the last euroshop – was also completely made of KApA® in 2008. Over 170 m² of KApA®plast in 10 mm thickness was used on nearly 46 m² of

stylIsh IN whItE – kAPA® At thE kOhlsChEIN ExhIBItION BOOth

exhibition space and 5.5 m of stand height. the sheets were mounted on the scene onto a prefabricated substructure with hot glue and plastic screw connections. In order not to disturb the homogenous design of the stand, it was a prerequisite that the material would not be visibly mounted on a substructure so that no attachment materials whatsoever were to be seen on the frontal view. the handling of the materials to be utilised for stand construction always plays a decisive role with a trade fair stand. Due to the lightness of the panels – also with large formations of 1 250 x 2 950 mm, as they were utilised by Kohlschein, for instance

– one man is enough with the mounting in several metres height.

DIBOND® sIGNs FOr mIllIONs OF FOOtBAll FANs the signal AG (cH) provided an important contribution towards implementation of the UeFA eURO 2008™ with DIBOND®. Over 5 000 signs were produced in only 6 weeks. these signs showed the fans in the host cities Basel, Berne, Geneva and Zurich the ways from the motorways via main and side roads to the parking lots and via bicycle paths and footpaths to the stadiums, as well as to the fan zones and to public means of transportation. In the beginning of march 2008, the signal AG received the award from the euro 2008 sA for delivery of traffic signs. At the same time, it was clearly defined by the euro 2008 sA at which destination how many and which type of signs had to be delivered. together with the customers, an optimal solution was sought for ap-propriate selection of material. In addition to DIBOND®, plastics and full aluminium were initially up for discussion. On account of the optimal ratios of weight to stiffness, simplicity of treatment processes, length

of utilisation, production flexibility, but above all also because of the material’s appearance and retail price (material + finish expense), the choice was clearly made for DIBOND®. In this connection, 2 134 m² of DIBOND® platinum white and 5 000 m of fasten-ing rails were processed for all kinds of signs. the large number of the most varying sign formats and most varying sign images, symbols and pictograms necessitated a “general staff” planning concept from signal AG for the material procurement, the production processes and ultimately also the fine distribution of the entire volume. the completely customised material for the signposting was purchased with AlcAN cOmpOsItes trading partner Alfaplast (cH). First of all, the front foil was removed for the processing, and a black margin com-prised of DIBOND® was screen-printed. parallel to this, self-adhesive foils with logos, symbols, numbers and text were

produced my means of silk screen printing and digital printing, and subsequently laminated onto DIBOND®. At the same time, the fastening rails were degreased, adhesion promoter was applied and dou-ble-sided 3m adhesive tape was attached by another signal AG team. the sheets were also pre-treated. After that, the fastening rails were positioned and with a nip roll the fastening rails were pressed with high pressure onto the panels in order to ensure the perfect bonding of the adhesive tape. the signs were packed in a protective packaging after compre-hensive final control. In addition to short delivery dates, 49 multistage individual ordering procedures and orders as well as 17 different delivery locations, above all the different versions of the signs in over 400 basic variations plus special variations for each host city certainly re-quired a maximum performance in project planning, order handling and logistics for the signal AG in this project.

Oras provided pioneer work in the pro-duction of high-quality fittings with the founding of the company in 1945. today the firm is the market leader for touchless faucets (touchless functioning of fittings) in europe with production facilities in Finland, Norway and poland as well as sales and service offices in almost all the countries of europe. Oras has always placed the utmost value on user-friendli-ness, environmental-friendliness and safety. But nowadays the design of the fittings has become the focus of atten-tion as a decisive purchase criterion for a majority of customers. In order to also attach appropriate importance to the desire for “more design” at the point of sale, Oras created a completely new ambience with displays made of DIBOND® to put the high-quality, design-oriented products in the right light. “In the past, we utilised very different types of displays made of completely different materials. to set us apart from the competition we

have meanwhile prepared a continuously uniform concept for our displays in order to reflect our image as a user-friendly brand, even with regard to the simplicity of recognition”, says so Jouko Viljanen, Fair and exhibition manager with Oras.

“An important goal in this connection was to create the feeling, even at the point of sale, of making the right decision with our fittings. the design and high quality of the displays played a particularly decisive role in this connection. First of all, we ourselves built prototypes for this purpose, which were tested in various countries. After a successful test phase we found with Ottilia the suitable partner to manage the rollout and to go into serial produc-tion with the displays. ”the cooperation between Oras and Ottilia has existed for many years, and has very quickly assumed far-reaching dimensions with various display projects. For the new pOs concept from Oras, dozens of variations were produced in order to painstakingly filter

out exactly the best display housing for the presentation of Oras products. “We selected DIBOND® for the new concept, above all because of the high quality of the products and the ease of processing the material. DIBOND® is the perfect basis for implementing various designs and three-dimensional forms. In addition to the advantages with the processing in comparison to full aluminium or other materials, DIBOND® is also much lighter, particularly with such large displays. today we have 15 different display variations made of DIBOND® – which show be-tween one and 15 fittings – which will be produced in large quantities for our pOs presentations.” A combination of DIBOND® in jet black and aluminium metallic was utilised for the displays. And so not only a more exclusive contrast to the fittings was able to be established, but also the stylish, design-oriented ambience that Oras desired for presentation of their products will be transported.

Anyone who has looked at the shop window decoration of the well-known department store chain Galeria Kauf-hof (Kaufhof Warenhaus AG, 126 chain stores in over 80 German cities) in the beginning of the summer felt a touch of summer, sun, beach and sea! extravagantly visualised, presented in an experience-oriented manner and perfectly set in the scene: ice cream, cocktails, plans and beach equipment

– on 800 panels of FOReX®smart! life-style provider Galeria Kaufhof came to Kl Druck with this order. the firm Kl Druck (Kürten & lechner GmbH) in Bergisch Gladbach is the leading system provider for sales promotion, and offers the most varying printing processes (offset, silk

screen and digital printing) as well as the implementation of all production steps up to the logistics centre. For the Kaufhof project the predetermined motifs were initially printed directly onto synthetic rubber foil and laminated onto FOReX®smart. the display was milled out exactly to form afterwards. the specification to utilise a 10 mm thick material was provided by Galeria Kaufhof. Kl Druck decided in favour of FOReX®smart on account of the materi-al’s lightness. “First of all, the weight of the panels was then the deciding factor for us”, says Frank Brühl, purchasing manager with Kl Druck. “Over 2 metre high displays were partially prepared from the panels, which one also had to

be able to handle and lift in the local chain stores, and above all in the shop window.” FOReX®smart is a co-extruded lightweight panel with a core comprised of foamed polystyrene and coatings comprised of solid polystyrene. the panel is extremely light (with 10 mm thickness < 2 kg / m²) with high inherent stability and robustness, temperature-resistant and UV-stable, which particularly pays off with high solar radiation in the shop window. the 800 panels were purchased with AlcAN cOmpOsItes trading partner Otto Wolff in Wesseling. the refreshing Galeria Kaufhof summer decoration was able to be seen in the shop windows of chain stores for over 3 months.
