Preface

Supporting and recruiting from college and university risk management and insurance(RMI) programs can be an important tactic to help insurance organizations respond effec-tively to the talent crisis the insurance industry will continue to face as baby boomers retire.You see, as a product of one of these programs nearly 40 years ago, I know firsthand that thefollowing are truths.

• RMI graduates are already sold on our industry and want to work in it.• These young people know the basic concepts (and even some advanced concepts)

of insurance.• They understand our peculiar lingo.• And, in general, they can get off to a much faster and more productive start in an in-

surance organization than other students.The problem is that there are not enough of them coming out of university risk managementand insurance programs to fill all the jobs the industry needs to fill. One solution to thisproblem is for insurance organizations to increase their emphasis on recruiting RMI majorsas well as their financial support of RMI programs around the country. Doing so will helpprofessors recruit more majors into their programs and thereby bring more talent into theindustry.

To facilitate those organizations with an interest in recruiting RMI majors and supportingthese university programs, we have compiled this directory of undergraduate programsaround the United States. While many of these schools also offer graduate degree programswith an RMI focus, this directory concentrates on their undergraduate offerings since therewill be a broader level of interest in these individuals.

This fifth edition of the directory includes listings for 49 RMI programs, including 4 new uni-versities. The establishment of new programs is a very good sign for our industry.

We have tried to include sufficient information in each program’s profile to give you asolid head start in evaluating the program and determining whether to pursue its stu-dents. To the extent possible, this information was corroborated by comparing informa-tion on their websites with information obtained directly from professors. Links to theirwebsites are also included. If you have suggestions for additions, deletions, corrections, orimprovements to the directory, please contact IRMI and your suggestions will be consid-ered for a future update of the directory.
