The role of an actuaryTheir advice is essential to many industries, including banking and investments, insurance, healthcare and pensions, where a single decision can have a major financial impact or affect hundreds of thousands of people. The skills of an actuary are highly respected and sought after, and qualifying is not easy.

The qualifications you’ll needYou will need a good grade in A level or Scottish Higher maths, and usually a good degree in a numerate subject such as mathematics, statistics, sciences or economics. You then join an actuarial firm and develop your skills while you qualify by taking our professional exams. This usually takes between three and six years. If you have a degree or full time post-graduate qualification in a numerate subject, you may be exempt from some of our exams.

Life as an actuaryStudying for the professional exams is very demanding, although most employers provide study leave, as well as help with tuition fees. However, it can prove very rewarding as it is a very satisfying and stimulating career. It offers intellectual challenge, an influential role and an excellent salary. It is very diverse and the skills that you will gain from undertaking the qualification can take you anywhere in the world. Actuaries are business professionals who deal with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. How to become an actuaryIt makes sense to experience first hand what’s involved, by doing a work placement. This also gives you a chance to meet and chat to working actuaries, and will stand you in good stead if you then decide to pursue a career as an actuary.
