2013-2014 River Oaks Academy School Improvement Plan ReportRiver Oaks Academy is entering its fifth year of existence. We are a non-magnet school, serving approximately 668 scholars (including 2 Pre-K classes) in the CMS district, located in the WLC. Though not a magnet school, we incorporate many of the strategies found in magnet schools, thereby offering scholars a plethora of experiences. At the K-1 level, we offer a Learning Immersion Program, where scholars are pushed to maximum potential; at 2 nd-3rd a Paideia/Communication Program, encouraging children to think, discuss, and converse at high levels; and at 4-5 a Global Studies Program, focusing on world issues and problem-solving. Each focuses on infusing the multiple intelligences and teaching scholars higher level and critical thinking skills. These skills are STEM focused as we move to ensuring that our scholars are equipped with the 21 st century Science, Math and Technology skills as they will need to become and remain globally competitive. Our programs are designed to meet the needs of all students through small group, individualized instruction, and flexible groupings.

Our mission at River Oaks Academy is to empower scholars to reach their maximum potential to become successful and competitive within the global community.

Our motto, “Empowering Scholars for Academic Excellence!” serves as a reminder to the school community that our goal is to ensure that our scholars are given the tools to meet with success wherever life may lead them. This is evidenced in the collaborative team efforts of our staff, PTA, and our commitment to establish business partnerships, as we provide scholars with optimal opportunities to excel academically, behaviorally, and socially in a learning environment that is reflective of the high expectations set by the adjoining groups.

ROA is a diverse center for learning. We have an ethnic population of 67.9% African American, 15.2% Caucasian, 3.3% Asian, 8.3% Hispanic, and 4.0% multi-racial. Further, we have 3.3% of our students identified as LEP, 7.5% Exceptional, 2.2% Gifted, and 70% ED.

In kindergarten, we have 4 classes, averaging 19 students each; first grade-4 classes averaging 22 students; second grade-4 classes, averaging 21 students; K-2 Multi-age-3 classes averaging 23 students; third grade-5 classes averaging 26 students; fourth grade-4 classes, averaging 25 students; and fifth grade-5 classes, averaging 27 students.

Our school begins with its scholars at 64.9% in Reading and 78.3% in Math for the current fourth and fifth grade scholars who were tested during the 11-12 school term.

Other facts about our school include the following: A fifth year school 20 business partnerships Monthly Parent/Family/Staff Involvement activities ROA P.R.O.S (Mentoring/Safety program for Fathers) Quarterly conferences with parents Curriculum Night Quarterly dances School-wide Character Education Program Positive Discipline School-wide Implementation, Study Island Reading Program, Discovery Education Clubs that include Chess Club, Media/Tech Club, Safety Patrol, Book Club, Glee Club, Art Club, Math Olympiad, Student Government, Girls on the
