Development Overview

As the “go-to” place for high impact giving, The

Boston Foundation works with hundreds of area

philanthropists to help them meet their own

philanthropic goals. The Foundation acts as a

partner in philanthropy and a charitable asset

manager through which donors can conduct

their giving.

The Boston Foundation’s work with donors and

other funders includes:

Donor Advised Funds, which were

introduced in the 1980s and have become a popular and fulfilling way for philanthropists who want a

return on their investment. Aided by donor services staff, the Foundation supports its donors so that

they can achieve their goals;

Bequests and outright gifts to the Permanent Fund for Boston, Greater Boston’s endowment, which

supports all of the Foundation’s competitive, discretionary grant making;

Contributions to the Civic Leadership Fund, which fuels the research, forums, and public policy

work the Foundation engages in;

Opportunities to partner and co-invest with the Foundation on priorities of common interest; and

Access to a full service philanthropic consultancy in The Philanthropic Initiative, which supports

donors, foundations, and corporations locally, nationally, and globally to achieve lasting change.

Going forward, the Foundation plans to engage with its donors even more on the work it does through the

Permanent Fund for Boston grant making.

The Permanent Fund for

Boston:

At the heart of everything The Boston

Foundation has done over the last century –

every grant it has made, every innovation it has

supported, every cause it has championed – is its

endowment, the Permanent Fund for Boston.

Established through bequests left by hundreds of

visionary and forward-thinking Bostonians since

1917, this essential fund fuels all of the Foundation’s work and provides the resources that have sparked

positive change and enabled new ideas.

Each year, The Boston Foundation distributes

more than $16 million in grants and other support

from the Permanent Fund for Boston. These

discretionary grant-making dollars are largely

awarded through a competitive process that is

open to all nonprofits serving the Foundation’s

catchment area and is stewarded by the

Foundation’s Program Department Staff. All

grants are approved by the Foundation’s Board of

Directors.

The list of iconic institutions that have received seed funding from the Foundation over the years is

extensive. (See the full list of the more than 100 times the Foundation was “There at the Beginning.”) In

addition, the Foundation offered early funds for most of the city’s neighborhood health centers and

community development corporations. It also played a major role in the cleanup of Boston Harbor, helping

to transform it from one of the filthiest bodies of water in the world to one of the cleanest urban harbors in

America.

No one knows what the challenges of the next century will be, but we do know that The Boston Foundation

will be there — adapting to the times and leading the way. And all of its work will be underwritten by the

Permanent Fund for Boston.

During the Foundation’s Centennial year, in 2015, it launched a special Campaign for Boston to strengthen

the Permanent Fund for Boston for today and for the future so that it will always provide the resources to

meet the most pressing contemporary needs of the city and region. To date, the campaign has raised nearly

$200 million in outright gifts and bequest intentions. The Campaign for Boston seeks major bequests from

individuals and families who want to leave a permanent legacy to the city they love.

Client Overview

The Boston Foundation is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the nation. Its donors

In 2012, the Boston Foundation and The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI) merged, with TPI operating as a distinct

unit of the Boston Foundation to design and implement customized philanthropic strategies for families,

foundations and corporations both here and around the globe. TPI pioneered the field of strategic

philanthropic advising over 20 years ago and remains a national leader today. Through its consulting

services and its work to advance the broader field of strategic philanthropy, TPI has influenced billions of

dollars of giving worldwide. TPI’s Center for Global Philanthropy promotes international giving from the U.S.

and local philanthropy around the world.

In 2015, The Boston Foundation celebrated its 100th

anniversary as the primary philanthropy for Greater

Boston – from the earliest days of responding to human

need, to seeding innovation through grants for fresh

ideas, to helping change the very systems that affect the

lives of everyone in the city and its region.

Building on its impact to date, the Foundation created

Thriving People, Vibrant Places: A Five-Year Progress

Report as part of a reflection process launched in 2015,

in conjunction with the Foundation’s centennial anniversary. With a continuing commitment to major issues

facing Boston and expressed community needs, this strategic framework identifies the priorities that will

shape The Boston Foundation’s direction going forward.
