Directions: Take down these notes about adverbs.
An ADVERB is a word used to modify a verb, an adjective or another adverbAdverbs can modify in several ways including time, place, manner, extent/degree, means, etc.

ADVERBS Modifying VERBS-The most useful way of recognizing ADVERBS modifying verbs is by rephrasing the sentence as a question that elicits the ADVERB as the answer.
For Example:Time: They unloaded the truck yesterday.ADVERB question: When did they unload the truck?Answer: yesterday

ADVERBS Modifying VERBS-How is actually an ambiguous use
-It asks the question by what means something is done.For Example:Question: How do you take an atomic bomb apart?Answer: Carefully

ADVERBS Modifying VERBS-Adverbs of manner are the ONLY ADVERBS that have a distinctive form: An adjective + “ly”For Example:Quiet – quietly; firm – firmly; rapid – rapidly; sentimental - sentimentally

ADVERBS Modifying ADJECTIVES- Adjectives cannot modify other adjectives
- Adjectives can modify nouns and sometimes pronouns
- If a word modifies an adjective, the modifying word must be an ADVERB.
- Most ADVERBS that modify adjectives are intensifiers in other words words that emphasize the adjective

ADVERBS are often intensifiers (very and quite), but they may also be words that qualify or limit the meaning of the second ADVERB
