ABOUTTHEPRODUCTIONHowdoyoumakeafilmaboutamusicfestivalwithouttakinganentirefilmcrewintothemidstof60,000dancing,partyingkids?Youcan’t.“Thewriterinmehasalwaysthought,‘whatanexcitingthingtotryanddo,tomakeafilmatamusicfestival’”laughswriterandproducerOliverVeysey.“AnditwasonlywhenIputmyproducer’shatonthatIdiscoveredhowchallengingitwasgoingtobe!”Everysummer,fieldsalloverthecountryfillwiththousandsofrevellerswhomaketheirownpilgrimages to experience the mad, muddy magic of the British festival. Events likeGlastonbury, Bestival, Reading and Leeds bring people together from all walks of life,creatingpop-upcitiesthatturnasingleweekendintoatransformationalexperience.“WhenIwas17IhitchhikedtoGlastonbury”saysVeysey.“AndforaperiodoftimeIwentto10festivalsayear.Itwasabigpartofmylife,andmyfriends’lives.”WithdocumentarieslikeWoodstock (1970),Glastonbury (2006)andAllTomorrow’sParties(2009) only ever seeing the crowd as vox pops, Veysey knew that no one had ever reallymanagedtocapturethefeelingofbeingatafestival–letaloneuseditasabackdropforadramaticmovie.Co-producing The RailwayMan in 2013 with TheWho’smanager, Bill Curbishley, Veyseystartedtradingfestivalstorieswhenheheardtheperfectset-upforhisscript.“ObviouslyBill’sbeeninvolvedinmusichiswhole life,buthetoldmethestoryofhowhisdaughterwenttoherfirstfestival.Shewas16atthetimeandshebeggedhimtogountilhesaid,‘okay,youcango,butthisyoungmanisgoingtocomewithyou’–andhefoundherachaperone.He told this guy, ‘you’re going to takemy daughter to her first festival and ifanythinghappenstoheryou’llanswertome’.Soofftheywent,theboyterrifiedandthegirlmortified…TheywentinandwithinamatterofhoursthegirlshadditchedtheboysandthenexttimeanyonesawBill’sdaughtershewasontheshouldersofsomerandomguyinthemoshpitofthemainstage…ontheBBC.”Mixing Curbishley’s storywith his own, and bringing the rock legend on board as his co-producer, VeyseywroteAccessAll Areas as theultimate festival experience – a feel goodroadtripwithanemotional,dramaticheartthatwasgoingtobeset,stagedandshotrightinthemiddleofarealfestival.Taking the idea of the ‘pilgrimage’ as his cue, Veysey’s script told the story of multiplejourneys,andmultiplegenerations.JustasHeathandMiahavetheirownproblemstoworkout,sotoodoLibbyandMack–witheveryoneinthefilmsearchingforsomethingthey’velost along theway.Access All Areasmight be a freewheeling festival film, but it’s alwaysanchoredbyitscharacters.Knowinghowdelicatethisbalancewasgoingtobe,Veyseyknewheneededadirectorwhounderstoodbothsidesofhisstory–leadinghimtodirectorBrynHiggins.“BrynreallyunderstoodwhatIwastryingtodo,”explainsVeysey.“Wereallyconnectedinterms of the energy andwhat it needed to feel like. He’s a very assured director and heknowsexactlywhathewants.Heunderstandsmusic,heunderstandsthecharactersandhereallyknowshowtotellastory.”
“As ever, you start with the script,” adds Higgins, who went from Casualty 1909 andPrivates,toBlackMirrorand2014’shard-hittingepilepsydramaElectricity.“IthoughtAccessAllAreaswasaverycharacterful,warmscript. Itwasalwaysmeanttobea filmthatgivestheexperienceofgoingtoafestival,butitobviouslyhadtohaveagreatstoryattheheartofit.It’sagoodstrongfamilydrama,butatthesametimeit’sneversoftoreasy.Soitwasthescriptthatattractedmefirst,andthenthepedigreebehindit.”Describingthefilmasa“feelgoodroadmoviefortwodifferentgenerations”,Higgins’ownloveofmusicmadesigningonaneasydecision.“HonestlyIcansaythisisoneofthemostfunfilmsI’vedone,”hesays.“Ofcourseitwasabigchallenge,andofcoursetherewasalotofinterestingthingsthatwehadtoovercome,butit’sakindofwin-win.It’safilmwithalovelycharacterledscript,it’safilmthatinvolvesthechallengeofshootinginarealfestival,andaboveallit’saboutmusic–andtome,thosearethreefantasticthingstobeabletotakeon.You’rebuildingaworldfromscratchwhenyoumakea featureand thiswasagreatworld tobuild. Itwasanexcuse tohavea lotofcolour,agreatdealofmusic…”MUSICATTHEHEARTOFITALLPickingasoundtrackthatincludeseveryonefromFaithless,TameImpalaandFutureIslandstoJohnHolt,RoyalBloodandDisclosure–andcapturing liveperformancesfromTheWhoandUnderworld–music isattheheartandsoulofthewholefilm.ThesoundtracktorivalanyfilmreleasedthisyearwillbereleasedonUniversalRecords.Veyseysays“thefilmcarriesyouawayandimmersesyouforatimeinthefestival,andthemusicplaysacrucialroleinthat”.“Atmostfestivalsthere’s20oddstagesplayingatonce,”explainsHiggins.“MyownkidsarelisteningtostuffthatIwouldn'tevenhavelistenedtobackintheday–sothewholemusicworld isbetternow thanever.Everybody listens toeverythingand the soundtrackhad toreflectthat.SoIgottolistentoallkindsofnewbands.ForabriefmomentIwasquitehip!”AUNIQUELOCATIONShootingexteriorsinandaroundBristol,withroadscenesshotallovertheSouthWest,thebiggest challenge early on was securing a real festival to double as the fictitious Isle ofSounds. Needing amajor event that offered the kind of crowd, as well as the variety ofdifferentareas,backdropsandlocationsneededtostagethebulkofthefilm’saction,therewasonlyeveronechoiceforthefilm’sproducers.“Itwasobviouslyamountainof logistical challenges,butBestivalwas theonly festivalweapproached,”explainsVeysey.“I’dbeentothefestivalafewtimesbeforeandIwasalreadya big fan. Forme it’s themost beautifully designed,well thought out experience and thebestlookingfestivalbyfar.JosiedaBankdesignsit–andRob[daBank]curatesthemusic–andthey’vedoneareallywonderfuljob.It’safilmsetthatwecouldjustneveraffordonourbudget,soweapproachedthemearlyonandtheywerebothreallyintotheidea.Andthenwestartedtofigureoutwhatitwouldreallytaketoshootinacrowdof50,000people…”
CHARACTERSANDCASTButbefore the tents startedgoingup, the film’sproducersneeded to finda strongyoungcasttofillthem.“WewantedthisfilmtofeelveryBritish,”saysVeysey.“Themusicfestivalexperience feels so ingrained in our society, so itwas a conscious choice to try andworkwithBritishactors.”Finding four young actors from four verydifferent backgrounds to fill themain friendshipgroup,therisingstarsofAccessAllAreasareasuniqueastheircharacters.“Thescriptisveryclear in theway itdelineateseachof the four characters, so itwas reallynice to cast theyoung kids as different types – four different flavours,” says Higgins. “They all camewithreallygooddecisions,andIthinkthey’reallamazing”.FirstupwascastingHeath–theangstyheroofthestorywhosequesttofindKurtzshapestheeventsofthewholefilm.Turningto23-year-oldEdwardBluemel,anactorstraightoutofdrama school with no screen credits to his name, Veysey believes they’ve found one ofBritain’snextbiggeststars.“EdwardhadnothingonhisCVandthatwasincrediblyexciting,”heenthuses.“Ifeelreallyluckythatwe’vegivenhimhisfirstjobbecauseIthinkwe’regoingtoseeahugeamountoutofhiminthefuture.He’sawonderful,wonderfulactor.Hejustinstinctivelyknowswhatittakestobeascreenactorandyoucan’ttakeyoureyesoffofhim.”“It’sbeenabitofbaptismoffire,inthebestpossibleway,”laughsBluemel,sincegoingontostaralongsideOliviaWilliamsandMarkBentoninITV’sTheHalcyon.“Learningwhatit’sliketoactinthemiddleof30,000MissyElliotfansisabitofachallenge!ButHeathissuchagreatcharactertoplay,it’sbeenanincredibleexperience”.Describing his character as “wise beyond his years”, Bluemel was drawn to the complexrelationship Heath has with his mother, played by Jo Hartley. “Heath takes himself veryseriously,”hesays.“He’sgrownupbeingfarmoreofanadultthanachild.He’slookedafterhis mum, who’s a complete loose cannon, and he’s channelled all of his frustration intomusicand intotheworshipofhis idol,Kurtz.Heputshimselfthrougha lotofobstaclestogetwherehe’sgoing.”Theflip-sidetoHeath(andtoBluemel) isMia,broughtto lifeby21-year-oldEllaPurnell–alreadyabig-screenveteranafterthe likesofNeverLetMeGo,Kick-Ass2,MaleficentandMissPeregrine’sHomeforPeculiarChildren.WithPurnellturninginaremarkablynuancedperformanceasthetroubledteenwhodealswithhermother’sdeathbydoingeverythingshecannottothinkaboutheremotions,itwasacastingdecisionthatalmostdidn'thappen.“Iwanted a holiday!” laughs Purnell. “I’d already done twomovies that year and I didn'twanttodoanythingelseforabit.ButthenIreadthescriptanditwastheweirdestscriptI’deverread.Itwasmental.SoIskypedBryntofindoutabitmoreandassoonasIgotoffthecallIthought,Ihavetoplaythischaracter.“Mia is intriguing. I’ve never played anyone quite as strong as this. I’ve played a lot ofdamselsindistress–girlsthatneedrescuingbyahandsomeprince–butthisdamselnickstheprince’sbikeatthestartofthefilm!”
Withthedauntingprospectofhavingtolearnhowtoplaythepiano,theguitar,howtosingthree songs and ride a motorbike in two weeks, Purnell threw herself into the role andimpressedeveryoneonset.“IthinkElla,havingthatexperienceonfilms,wasgreatbecausesheplaysafairlyrebelliouscharacterwho’sgotallsortsofproblemsdealingwiththedeathofhermum–andIreallyadmire thewayshedidn't try togetanysympathy fromtheaudience,”saysHiggins.“Shedidn't play it soft or hurt, but you still sympathisewith her – and I think that took somereallygoodthinking.”NextupwasLeon–the jokerof thepackwhostarts the filmasHeath’snerdybest friendandendsupbeingcompletelytransformedbythefestival.NeedingsomeonewhocouldplayLeonforlaughswithoutlosinghisoddballcharm,theproducersturnedto24-year-oldRizzleKicksstarJordanStephens.A Brit School alumni who’s been proving himself in the spotlight since he started theplatinumsellinghip-hopactRizzleKickswithHarleyAlexander-Sulein2006,Stephensisstillnewtoacting.Debuting inE4’s2014dramaGlue,beforegoingon toanumberof smallerroles in film and TV (including a cameo in last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story),StephenswantedtogetinvolvedassoonasheheardthefilmwasshootingatBestival–aneventheheadlinedin2012.“IwantedtogetinvolvedbecauseIlikeprojectsthatattempttodothingsthathaven’tbeendone before,” he says. “I’ve seen one film set at a festival, which wasWoodstock, butobviouslythatwassostylised.Sotryingtocaptureamoderndayfestival–withouta fakeset – I don't think that’s been done before. And then I found out that Missy Elliot washeadliningthatyearandthatsoldmebecauseIknewI’dgetafreeticket…”Geeking out on set whenever he bumped into anyone he’d seen on TV, and laughing atHiggins forwearingabaseball capandparkerand“looking toomuch likea filmdirector”,Jordanfoundalotofhimselfinhischaracter.“Leon is anerdwho’s really intohismusic and then the festival sortof awakenshimandturnshim intoabitofhippie,”he says. “And that’sprettymuch the same transformationthatI’veundergoneoverthelastfouryears.There’sdefinitelyalotofLeoninme.IreadthescenesandIfeltlikeIknewwhatLeonwoulddobecausethere’sapartofmethat’stotallyhim.Evenifwedon’tlikethesamemusic…”With music playing such an important role in the film, all the cast made personalisedplaylists to get into their characters: Jordan picking minimalist EDM and obscure Pixiesdemos,EdchoosingJoyDivisionandTangerineDream,EllapickingSia,andGeorgieHenleydefiningNataliein“sugaryelectroacidpop”.Roundingoffthegroupastheexcitable,fun-lovingpartygirlNat–22-year-oldHenleywaschosenagainsttype.Knowntoaudiencessincetheageof10whenshedebutedasLucyinthe blockbuster Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, she’s not usually associated with characterswhowindupondrunkone-nightstandsonatourbus.“Nat is just mental. She’s batty,” laughs Henley. “I was so excited to play something sodifferentfromothercharactersI’dplayed.Ilovedthescript–unfortunatelyit’squiterare
to find a script that depicts teenaged life in a real, raw sense and the group dynamicbetween these four characters was just so amazing. Nat and Mia are the ultimatetroublesometwosome–they’relikechalkandcheesebuttheyabsolutelyadoreeachother.IthinkofNatalieasasparklyhurricane!”Throwntogetherunderthemostextremefilmingconditions,allfouractorsquicklybondedasagroup–atributetothesenseoffunandgood-feelingthatfilledtheset,butafactmadeallthemoresurprisinggiventheirreallifedifferences.“You can’t not bond at Bestival. Butwe’re all so remarkably similar to our characters it’sinsane,”laughsPurnell.“Jordan’sthementalone,GeorgiehaszeroinhibitionandEd’sabitmorereserved.You’vealsogotJordanfromtheBritschool,Edfromdramaschool,GeorgiefromCambridgeandmejustfloatingaroundafterfinishingmyA-Levels.Sowe’veallgotthepersonalitiestomatchourschools!”Withthekidsinplace,theproducersturnedtheirattentiontotheoldergeneration,pickingveteran British character actors Jo Hartley and Nigel Lindsay as Libby and Mack,QuadrophenialegendPhilDanielsasthefestivalferrymanandLock,StockandTwoSmokingBarrelsandX-MenstarJasonFlemyngasthemythicalmusicianKurtz.“It’safilmaboutteenagers,butit’salsoabouttheparents,”saysHiggins.“IthinkpeoplelikeJoandNigelarefantasticactors–andtheydidabrilliant jobunderallsortsofconditions.Jason’sjustlovelytoworkwith.He’sdoneahundredsomethingfilmsbuthecomeswiththisenormousfocus.SamewithPhilDaniels.ItwasgreattohavehimasanodtoQuadrophenia,buthe’salsoagreatactorandhisconcentrationonthedayisamazing.”PlayingMack with a fine balance of tightly wound aggression and innocent vulnerability,Lindsay(Scoop,FourLions)wasdrawntohischaracter’scomplexarc inthescript.“Mack’swifedied,nottoolongago,”heexplains.“He’sleftwithadaughterwho’sstrugglingtogetoverit,andhe’sstrugglingtogetoverithimself.He’scompletelycloseddownasahumanbeingandhisdaughterhasrebelledaccordingly.Butthere’salovelyjourneyforMack.AshechasesMiaonherownjourneyhefindssomethingforhimselftoo.”Partnered with Jo Hartley as Heath’s unstable mother Libby, it’s Lindsay’s last acttransformationasMackthatgivesthefilm itsbiggestemotionalpull–mirroredbyLibby’sconfessionalreunionwithherson.“Libby is a magical character,” says Hartley. “She’s got quite a few sides to her. She’spossessivewithHeathandshelooksafterhim,butshecanswitchthatrelationshiparoundinaninstant.”RavingaboutthestrengthofBluemel’sdebutperformance intheir toughscenestogether,Hartleyjoinsalltheveterancastmembersinapplaudingthefourmainleads.“It’ssogreatto see young talentdelivering like that,” says Flemyng. “It’snotexact scienceand it’snoteasy.You’vegot todo thework,andwhenyou’re thatage sometimes it’shard todo theworkbecauseyou’vegototherthingsonyourmind–especiallywhenyou’remakingafilminamusicfestival…”
ACCESSINGALLAREAS50,000people.18stages.88-acresofpartying,drinking,dancingandmadness.Itmightnotsound like the best environment to shoot a feature film, butHigginsmade sure he cameprepared.“IdrewonmyTVexperience,particularlymyearlyworkwhenImadealotofdocumentariesandfilmedinwarzones…”helaughs.“Obviouslyit’stheirfestival–it’snotourmovieset.Sowhenitcametotakingafairlybigdramaunitintoanenvironmentthatyouhavenocontrolover,honestly,Ifounditfun.Wehadalotof,interaction,shallwesay,withordinaryyoungpeople–butforme,havingdonedocs,it’sallthoseaccidentsthatmakeeverythingwork.”Not that luck didn't play a part either. Shooting in the late summer of 2015, the crewmanagedtoavoidtherainfallthatsooftenturnsBritishfestivalsintomudbaths–gettingaweekendofnearperfectweather.Using a second unit to try and distract the crowd, extensively rehearsing each scenebackstage, andmaking sure everyonewaswiredwith radiomics so they could hear theircues(andfindeachother),thecrewonlyhadthreeintensivedaysandnightstoshootmorethanhalfthefilm.“Obviouslyifyou’reshootingatafestival,tryingtoshootadramawithdialogueandactualscenes,youhavenocontrol.Soyougoinwithacertainmindset.”explainsHiggins.“Ithinkwe planned it very well because we have a wonderful DOP and a fantastic Steadycamoperator,sowecameawaywithasensethatwebossedthefestivalratherthantheotherwayaround. It’sdefinitelynot justrunningaroundgrabbingstuffatafestival–thescenestakeplaceandthey’restagedandtheyworked.Soitwasplanning,andthensometimesyoujustwentwiththeflowwhenoddthingshappened…”Oddthingslikelosingoneofthecamerasonthelastdayofthefestival.“Itjustgottrappedbythecrowd!”laughsHiggins.“BoyBetterKnowwereonandyoujustcouldn’tmove.Sowelostpartof thecrewforawhile.Again, it informsthequalityandthevibeof thefilm inareallyniceway.Therewasabsolutelynopointgettingstressed.Ihadalreadylostmyvoiceondaytwo!”Shootinginandaroundthefestivalisonething,butpushingtheactors–andacameracrewequippedwitha largecamera,asetofanamorphic lenses,aboommicanda lightingrig–straightintoamainstagecrowdisanothermatterentirely.Bufferingtheactorswithasmallgroupofextras,thesmallunitlaunchedthemselvesfromthebackofthecrowdtothefrontbarrier.“Youcan’tprepareforthat,”saysHiggins.“That’sarealcrowdwatchingtheendofJungle’sset.AllcredittoEdBluemel–Idon'tthinkheevenknewthatthisisn’treallyhowyoumakefilms!Hereallywentforit,and[cinematographer]TonySlaterLingandthecameraguysjusthurledthemselvesthroughthiscrowd.Itwasmad,butthere’ssuchahugevisualcanvastodrawuponthatyoucan’tignoreit”.ForVeysey,whogot to seehis script turned into realitywitha castof50,000people, thewholeexperiencewasmadeupofaseriesofunforgettablemomentsofmadness.
“TherewasascenewhenJordanisbeingliftedoutofthecrowdbyanaerialistandit’salivestuntthatyouonlygettodoonce,”heremembers.“Wehadfivecamerasrollingand10,000kidsdancingtotheirfavouriteDJat2am–andwe’retryingtocueJordan,cuetheaerialists,cuethecamerasandmakeitallwork.I’dlovetosaythatwasaoneoff,butweattemptedthatkindofstuffaboutthreetimesaday.Andwepulleditoff”Asidefromoneoccasionwhenthescheduledbanddidn'tshowuponthemainstageandanentirecrowdscenehadtobescrappedandreplacedonthefly,thewholeproductionwentremarkablysmoothlyforsuchanuncontrollableshoot.“I’llneverforgetstandingbytoshootHeathrunningthroughthemainstagecrowdontheSaturday night,” says Veysey. “Everyone – the whole cast and crew, bar the Steadycamoperator–wasdancing.Wefedofftheenergyofthefestival.Itwasagreatmoment.”Butmoreofaproblemthanstagingthefilm’sbigset-piecesinthemiddleofalivemoshpitwerethesmallerscenesthattookplaceoutofthecrowd–inareaswherethecast(andthecamera)couldbemoreeasilyspottedbythepunters.“A lotofpeople thoughtwewere thenews,” laughsHenley. “You’redealingwitha lotofdrunkpeople,alotofhighpeople.”“Itwasinsane,”addsBluemel.“Youhadtonailyourtakebecauseyouknewyou’donlygetoneortwo.AnditwasprettyhardtodoanythingwithJordanwithoutsomeoneshoutingaRizzleKickslyricinthebackground!”Arguably though, it's those hardships and happymistakes thatmake up anyone’s perfectfestivalexperience–theverythingthatdrewtheentirecastandcrewtotheprojectinthefirstplace,wantingtorecreatetheirownmagicmemoriesonfilm.ForBluemel, itwas the timehegot lostatBigChill and for Stephens itwas turningupatReadingwithoutawristbandtwodaysbeforehestartedcollege.Purnellremembersbeggingadults to buy her boozewhen shewas too young to get to the bar herself – andHenleyremembersmissing her favourite bands at Leeds because shewas stuck in themud.
