Objective
SWBAT describe the advantages and disadvantages of direct and representative democracies in order to analyze text.

• Word meaning:
• Demos = People
• Cracy = Rule

• In a Democracy....

Forms of Democracy
• Direct - ALL people vote on ALL decisions
• Representative - people vote for elected officials to vote on issues for them.
Direct Democracy
• We vote on issues directly.
• Advantage: people have all the power.
• Disadvantages:
• uninformed people vote on issues
• only works in small groups.
Representative Democracy
• people elect officials to make decisions for them and propose laws.
• Advantage: people can choose experts to make and carry out decisions.
• Disadvantage: leaders may not represent people’s interests
PEOPLE CAN STILL MAKE LAWS SOMETIMES!!!!
Initiatives and Propositions
• People go around officials in order to propose laws.
• If there is enough support, the law is put up for a vote.
• Basically, they initiate and propose changes.

Activity on Direct v. Representative Democracies
• We will count off by TWO’s. Please remember your number. You will be working with your group on a 5 minute activity.

• Everyone in your group will have a vote on the decision you will be asked to make.
• Twos - Representative Democracy
• You must decide on two officials to represent your interests. THE TWO STUDENTS will make a decision for you. Choose your officials by majority vote.

• Elected officials, you must decide what to do with the Twix bars. Remember you represent them in making decisions.
• Ones - Direct Democracy
• You must decide what to do with the Twix bars. Everyone must vote and you will decide by majority rule.
• The bars CANNOT be split in half.

• What were the advantages and disadvantages of your form of democracy?
• What if we added 70,000 people?
• What if we were making a decision about what to do with $1,000?

• We will be reading an article about a Proposition in California to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
• We are going to practice strategies that will help us better understand what we read.
• Today we will practice background knowledge and text coding.
