Foreword | Preface

Orthognathic Surgery is one of the most challenging fields in oral and maxillo-facial surgery, but a close cooperation with orthodontists is indispensable. While the priority for ortho-dontists is to move teeth, the surgeons are able to move the bones and jaws. Only if both specialists work closely together and each knows what the other is able to do, it is possible to achieve a good result.

As this kind of surgery is optional for the patient, the result needs to be safe and satisfying for them. We need to know, that the reasons for the patients to undergo such an operati-on are to get straight teeth in 80%, to prevent dental prob-lems in 69%, to self-confidence, smile and social impro-vement in 68% and aesthetic improvement in 90%. Therefore, we must always respect the highest principle in surgery, “nihil nocere” (do no harm) to the patient.

More than 30 years experience, over 5,000 operative procedu-res, development of special techniques, research and over 40 publications in this field of surgery will be represented in this course. As a result of our experience, we have developed a special and unique course structure starting with the princip-les of traumatology (you must know how to fix and restore a jaw, before you cut it), indications for surgery, many different surgical techniques including distraction osteogenesis, plan-ning for surgery together with the orthodontist, possibilities of orthodontic treatment, how to treat malformations such as CLP, cranio-facial anomalies and many other options.
