Once again it’s the theme of God’s love as hospitality of heart that emerges in today’s Gospel:

Zacchaeus was a public sinner – as a tax collector he worked for the occupying Romans and extorted his own people. His sin was real, not imagined.

And the response of religious people was to shun him. That’s how sin and sinners should be treated.

By contrast Jesus invites himself to dinner!

RICHARD ROHR’S MEDITATION:

THE TRINITY PART V: JOIN IN THE DANCE

Once you learn to take your place inside the circle of praise and mutual deference, all meaningful distinctions between secular and sacred, natural and supernatural, fall away. In the Divine Economy, all is useable, even our mistakes and our sin. The cross shouted this message of “failure undone and used,” yet we still struggle to hear or accept it.

Everything is holy now. The only resistance to that divine flow of holiness and wholeness is our human refusal to see, to enjoy, and to participate.

We are each a transmitter station, a relay station, but sadly this is somehow humiliating for the ego. I was so happy when I first preached in Germany and found out that my last name, Rohr, was translated as “conduit” or “pipe.” Alleluia!

But my ego self is not satisfied to be a pass-through account; it wants to be a substantial “Richard Rohr!” Yet this small, egoic frame of reference is going to be gone in a few years in the form that I presently identify with. All I can be is a part of the circle of praise. Just knowing that I’m part of the team becomes more than enough, especially when I recognise that it was all given to me freely anyway.

I didn’t ask to be born. I thank God I was born, and I’m grateful to be here. My sister, St Clare of Assisi, is reported to have said right before she died, “Thank you for letting me be a human being.” There it is. It’s almost too simple and too clear. We each get our little chance to dance on this stage of life, to reflect the glory of God back to God and to participate with everything and everyone else.

Once I was able to move from pyramid thinking to circular thinking, by reason of the Trinity—ah! My mind let go of its own defences and stopped refusing and resisting the dance. Being a wallflower is not much fun.

Here’s how Thomas Merton more poetically puts it:

For the world and time are the dance of the Lord in emptiness. The silence of the spheres is the music of a wedding feast. The more we persist in misunderstanding the phenomena of life, the more we analyse them out into strange finalities and complex purposes of our own, the more we involve ourselves in sadness, absurdity and despair. But it does not matter much, because no despair of ours can alter the reality of things; or stain the joy of the cosmic dance which is always there. Indeed, we are in the midst of it, and it is in the midst of us, for it beats in our very blood, whether we want it to or not. Yet the fact remains that we are invited to forget ourselves on purpose, cast our awful solemnity to the winds and join in the general dance. [1]

A NOTE ABOUT WEEKDAY PARKING Please note that there is NO weekday parking (Monday to Friday) in the parish carpark at Lindfield, except during school holidays. This includes NO parking for weekday Mass unfortunately. On these days the carpark is at (indeed, beyond) capacity in providing parking for school and parish staff.

NOTICE OF PARISH MEETING:

There will be a Parish Meeting on Sunday 6th November at 11:30am in Killara church related to the proposal to lease a large part of the carpark adjacent to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at Killara. This meeting is for the whole parish – both the Lindfield and Killara communities - since the stewardship of our resources is a matter that concerns the future of us all in the parish. Emma McDonald, the Diocesan Financial Administrator will also attend and contribute to this meeting. The meeting will outline the steps taken to address parishioner concerns which arose in the Forums earlier this year, present the recommended proposal and allow time for clarification of any of the issues involved. Please note the date in your diary.

AN UPDATE ON THE CARPARK DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Following the Parish Meeting in September last year a series of Forums were organised in February of this year to which parishioners were invited and which provided an opportunity to raise questions and concerns.

The Killara Development Committee (KDC) identified two issues in particular arising from these Forums:

- that in any proposal car parking for the church needed to be provided - that we need to be sure that any proposed development represented the best possible use of the site and the best financial outcome for the community.

In the ensuing months these and other matters were addressed:

- our aim is to provide 21 car parking spaces for the parish in any proposed development. The present carpark, if properly marked, allows for only 29 car parking spaces. - to investigate an alternative use the KDC also engaged in discussions with a company that works with government in the provision of affordable housing. - the KDC also engaged the firm Charter Keck Cramer to undertake a formal best-use study of the site. - the outcome of all this work was to confirm to the KDC the proposal that would yield the best outcome for the parish. - of course much work would be done in negotiating any contract and the agreement would only be entered into if the contract in all its details served the best needs of the parish.

During this last week meetings took place of the Parish Pastoral Council, and of the PPC, Parish Finance Committee and the KDC in joint sitting. Both meetings were in agreement with the recommendation of the Killara Development Committee to pursue the Group Homes Australia proposal subject to all the conditions of the parish being complied with and to present this proposal to the forthcoming parish meeting.

The purpose of our forthcoming Parish Meeting is to present these matters in more detail and to present to the parish the recommended proposal, and to provide an opportunity for any new questions or concerns to be addressed. However it is not our intention to re-visit questions which have already been sincerely addressed and resolved by the KDC. The response to many of those concerns is set out on our website and it would be good if everyone took time to read that before the coming

meeting. It can be found under ‘News and Events’ ‘Killara Development’. For parishioners who don’t have internet access – please contact the Parish office and a copy can be mailed to you.

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow at the following words in bold): and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father & the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

THE PSALM PS 32:2-3. 17-19. 23.

I will bless the Lord at all times, God’s praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast. The humble shall hear and be glad. The Lord turns his face against the wicked to destroy their remembrance from the earth. The just call and the Lord hears and rescues them in all their distress. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed he will save. The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants. Those who hide in God shall not be condemned

At Masses at which the Psalm is sung the response is: The Lord hears the cry of the poor.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia! God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to himself; and the Good News of reconciliation he has entrusted to us. Alleluia!

REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR PARISH HALL AT KILLARA

The first stage of the work is progressing well – the removal of the annexe and creation of an outdoor space adjacent to the hall.

CAN YOU HELP? The next stage will be putting in a new kitchen. When we built the new kitchen in the Shirley Wallace Centre we were blessed to have the whitegoods – fridge, microwave and dishwasher - donated by parishioners. If you could help in this regard concerning the new kitchen at Killara please contact the Parish Office. We either need new whitegoods or up-to-date and in good condition appliances if you happen to upgrading your own kitchen. Fr Colin

The annexe has now been removed and an awning covers the outdoor space accessible from the hall.

ADVERTISING IN OUR PARISH BULLETIN We are grateful to those who advertise in our bulletin. It provides a further source of income for our parish, and in turn we hope that it supports the businesses who advertise with us. From time to time we lose some of our advertisers, resulting in a diminishment of this income source for the parish. Please consider if you would be willing to advertise in our bulletin and support our parish in this way. Or perhaps draw this opportunity to the attention of others you know beyond our parish. Please contact the Parish Office to arrange for advertisements.

GOSPEL REFLECTIONS BY: BERYL CATES

Hypocrisy is a form of lying and everyone knows lies come in various degrees of gravity and consequence. We’re all hypocritical at some time of another. How many thank their host and hostess profusely for an enjoyable evening that almost dulled them to sleep? Expressed gratitude for a tie they’ll probably use for staking the tomatoes? Said, “It’s no trouble” when it will be just that. Asked, “How are you?” and didn’t want to hear? And as for the banality of; “Have a happy day” and “Take care”, why not just “Goodbye”, said with the deep meaning it had before its contraction form: “God be with you”?

“Good Manners” lies which the church strangely calls officious, and St Thomas Aquinas said are venial sins, may be shaky on the truth, but don’t they have that thoughtfulness for others that Jesus taught? Imagine the disharmony in life without them. But then, there is buying that outfit for junior that won’t show the dirt, putting a chair over the worn part of carpet, repairing something to make it “look like new”.

“People who tell little white lies can become colour blind” - James E. Faust

The Pharisee in Jesus’ parable was not lying. He lived what he claimed. He thanked God he wasn’t an adulterer, subjected to greed or dishonesty. He fasted twice a week, and paid tithes on everything he bought. An exemplary standard indeed. The fasting alone makes our Lenten fast scarcely worthy of the name. And as for the once penitential season of Advent – on the liturgical horizon, by the way – when it comes to fasting and penance, it’s now a non -event.

It’s worth recalling what many exegetes say about bias towards the Pharisees in Scripture. That they were not all the hypocritical and pious dissemblers portrayed there. Following the disastrous revolt of 70 AD, they were the only religious group with influence left standing. They believed nationalism would be restored to the shattered people through an adherence to the Law of Moses and when the Christians dissented, they were ex-synagogued - our “excommunicated”. Prejudice crept into nascent Christianity’s traditions and so into the New Testament. It was not one-sided, by the second century, Judaism’ daily prayers contained a curse on, “Heretics and Nazarenes.”

For our part, hostility burgeoned into anti-Semitism, historically demonstrated in shameful discrimination and persecutions so violent and bloody they are almost incomprehensible to us. Following Vatican II, the Church has humbly and publically accepted its guilt and from the world asked pardon, and a new era of dialogue is under way.

In turn, Jewish theologians are re-examining their traditional attitude towards Jesus. It was Martin Buber who first described him as Judaism’s “elder brother” and renowned scholars such as Geza Vermes and David Flusser respect him as a Jew talking to Jew, from whom they can learn. Hans Kung, in “On Being a Christian” recounted Schalom Ben-Chonim’s deep respect for Jesus, though voicing Judaism’s non- acceptance of him as the Messiah or divine. “I feel his brotherly hand which grasps mine in his so that I can follow him. It is not the hand of the Messiah, the hand marked with scars. It is certainly not a divine, but a human hand, in the lines of which is engraved the most profound suffering.”

What made the Pharisee in the gospel story fail was his spiritual snobbery and judgementalism. And through the story Jesus warns us of succumbing to those failings

(continued from page 12): ourselves. The psychologist tells us when we see people, that unconsciously we make physical assessments of them - apart from those we know - and at the same time define ourselves by them. Not as old as that one…younger…shorter… older…less… more… appropriately dressed… If the psychologist is right and we do in the natural sense, we could in the spiritual and when assessment of another is brought to full consciousness, such as when the media screams its harsh censure on a convicted criminal, elitism and judgementalism follow.

They are baulked by the question: What if that elusive, vastly unknown part of me, the nucleus of my being that I call “I” had been subjected to all the unknown complexities of heredity, familial influences, an addictive gene too powerful to overcome, culture, faulty religious nurturing or none as this morally failed person may have, and on whom I am about to judge, what guarantee have I, that I would not have acted the same way? Or worse? No one knows the relationship of anyone with God. It is played out within the depths of people’s beings… including our own.

When we judge, Pope Francis said recently on Vatican Radio: "We put ourselves in the place of God… our judgment is poor judgment;…never true judgment."

The Pharisee represents us when our religious observance of ritualism and legalism stirs in us feelings of elitism and giving way to them, allows them pander pleasantly to any flagging self-esteem. Falsely boosting it to where we assume judgement of others less faithful. We can deny it, genuinely believe our denial, but it can lie coiled and present in the subliminal part of ourselves.

Blinded by his righteousness, the man in the parable never allowed himself self-scrutiny, without which religious loses its vigour. It is when we seriously see our inner selves in Christlight and become aware of the unredeemed parts of our personalities there, that we squirm at any spiritual pretentiousness. And, realise our need to reach out to that scarred hand and have it help us, up and out of our complacency and begin becoming more the person God meant us to be.

REFLECTING ON THIS SUNDAY’S SCRIPTURES ..

PHARISAISM

Today’s Gospel is about two people in the temple. One is a man of religion (a Pharisee) and the other is looked upon by everyone as a sinner (the tax collector).

In today’s terms, the parable might portray two of our contemporaries. One stands up arrogantly and proclaims his innocence of any wrongdoing: he is neither racist nor sexist; he oppresses no one; he is a strong supporter of peace; he doesn’t hate anyone; he always gives everyone an equal chance.

The other stands at a distance, acknowledging his own complicity in evil and begging God’s forgiveness for his contributions to the presence of sin in the world.

Enough of all this pharisaism! If no one is racist, then why is there racism? If everyone is for peace, then why is there peacelessness? If we all stand for equal opportunity, then why are so many deprived?

We have had enough Pharisees in our world, and we don’t need anyone else to tell us how innocent they are of wrongdoing. It’s time for all of us to stand at a distance and acknowledge our own complicity in evil. It’s time to stop bragging and to beg God’s forgiveness.

The structures of our society are subtly racist, for these structures reflect the values which society upholds. They are geared to the success of the majority and the failure of the minority.

Members of both groups give unwitting approval by accepting things as they are. Perhaps no single individual is to blame. The sinfulness is often anonymous but nonetheless real.

The sin is social in nature in that each of us, in varying degrees, is responsible. All of us in some measure are accomplices.
