DINING GUIDE 2009

By Lisa Snider

When I first started drinking red wine (after a regrettable phase with Kendall Jackson Chardonnay), like most in our region, I was drawn to pinot noirs. Some years later, the Sideways phenomenon hit, and my favorite wine was exploited like a single mom giving birth to octuplets. I soon graduated to a smoky, inky, bolder vari-etal: syrah.

WINE COUNTYContinued from Page 6

Syrah (not to be confused with petite sirah, a very differ-ent grape) is best known as a Rhone varietal, having devel-oped a solid reputation as a quality red-wine grape in one of France’s best-known wine regions. For Australians, who call it shiraz, it’s their most widely-planted grape. Syrah first appeared in California in the ’70s, and over the past decade, it has been steadily gaining in popularity right here in Ventura County, thanks to some very talented and resourceful local winemakers.

When renowned wine critic Robert Parker gave Manfred Krankl’s Sine Qua Non Syrah a perfect score of 100 points, Ventura County got noticed in a big way. But at upwards of $400 per bottle (if you’re lucky enough to actually find it), Venturans

are finding more affordable (and less elusive) pours to slake their thirst for syrah.

Though most of our local winemakers are sourcing their grapes from outside the county (Krankl’s “perfect” syrah grapes came from the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County), they work their magic right here in our own backyard to turn out award-winning products, from Ojai to Moorpark.

One of my favorites is Herzog Wine Cellar’s Special Reserve Syrah ($36). With grapes sourced from the Edna Valley, this wine is bursting with blue fruits and hints of pepper. Have a sip at Herzog’s gorgeous tast-ing room in Oxnard if you don’t believe me. Winemaker Joe Hurliman, by the way, was the one who told me that Syrah would be Ventura County’s sig-nature grape, and I think he

from the Old Creek Ranch Winery in Ojai ($28). Made with grapes grown in Santa Barbara County, this lovely red boasts flavors of ripe blackberries, tobacco and spice that will leave you wanting a second pour and a seat on the tasting room porch overlooking the ranch in order to fully appreciate it.

Also worth mentioning are the syrahs from Cantara Cellars and Rancho Ventavo Cellars. Cantara Cellars pours its Syrah ($29) in Camarillo with grapes sourced from Lodi. Rancho Ventavo Cellars of Moorpark (soon to be pouring in Oxnard’s Heritage Square) makes its syrah ($26) from grapes grown in Paso Robles.

Do you ever fantasize about throwing a posh party at home, where all your guests partner up

and cook dishes together? I do. But then I remember my limited appli-ances, counter space and fickle-at-best stove burners, and the concept quickly unravels in my mind.

Taking a class at the Ojai Culinary Studio was almost exactly as I envisioned my cooking party only, I didn’t have to shop for the menu or wash dishes afterward. Plus, there was a certified chef ready to deal with any glitches that might occur — that kind of insur-ance is invaluable.

Modern elegance enveloped me as I entered the Ojai Culinary Studio, leaving the misty, damp weather outside. There was a rosy linen tablecloth on a long rectan-gular table in the center of the room, and there were cheeses to sample. The counters were a deep, flecked charcoal color; golden wood floors and arched doorways added warmth and the appliances were top-of-the-line industrial-

chic. A door-sized mirror was canted over the main range so we could watch the pots steam-ing below.

Basic Sauces was the name of the class. Nancy Michali, the owner and primary instruc-tor of the Ojai Culinary Studio, greeted everyone by name as they entered and introduced us all individually. There were a pro-ducer, a nurse, a gourmet who used to sell her plum puddings to upscale department stores, a Seattle native and me.

Michali offered us hors d’oeuvres and handouts, and started talking about the his-tory of sauces. Her voice had a soft, sweet, honey quality, and her knowledge was vast. Did you know sauces were originally cre-ated by the French to cover up the taste of spoiled meat prior to the invention of refrigeration? Now, (thankfully!), their purpose is

solely to enhance or concentrate the flavors in a dish.

After the discussion, we chose what dishes we wanted to cook and found our workstations. The menu was poached wild salm-on with a beurre blanc, rib-eye

steaks in a red wine reduction, red snapper with a sweet and sour citrus sauce, grilled pork chops with a Thai peanut chili sauce, roasted rosemary butter potato wedges and a tossed salad with fresh basil vinaigrette.

Our ingredients were lined up for us, and we each grabbed our weapon of choice (chef ’s knife). As we began chopping, measur-ing and grilling, Michali glided around the room, assisting and instructing, or popped out to her kitchen garden to grab a handful of fresh herbs. We were there for the sauces but learned other culi-nary techniques as we poached, seared, whisked and reduced It was a sizzling, deliciously aro-matic adventure, all bound by Van Morrison songs playing lightly in the background.

As the dishes neared comple-tion, celebratory bottles of wine were uncorked. We took full plates of all we’d cooked and a glass of wine, and sat down to eat. Each person attentively watched as others tried his or her dish. “Because we’re invested, we feel proprietary about what we

made,” aptly stated the producer. As we ate, stories became more per-sonal about our travels, families, backgrounds and lives. Soon it was like a gathering of old friends.

“Can I tell you the real reason I opened a cooking school?” confided Michali leaning in toward the table. “It’s so all of you can cook these won-derful dinners and all I have to do is supervise!” Of course, she did far more than that, but she truly seemed to be living her dream by creating this magical experience for others.

For the same price as a nice din-ner (roughly $45), I’d actually spent a night learning, eating amazing food and enjoying the company of interesting people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Rather than going out for dinner each time you’re looking for great food, I would rec-ommend considering the option of just such a cooking class — alone or with friends F

inn itself by stating, “If you dream of being lulled to sleep by gentle surf, exploring tide pools on a private beach, relaxing poolside in a lush tropical garden setting, the Cliff House Inn turns dreams into a most afford-able reality.” Usually this sort of hype is just brochure exaggeration, but every time I’ve gone to the Inn has been a tranquil and memorable experience.

Mainly, I go to sit on the terrace of the Shoals Restaurant to watch breathtaking sunsets, usually with dolphins frolicking just beyond the surf line. My wine con-noisseur companion enjoys the restaurant’s noted cellar, particularly the reasonably priced Sunstone Winery merlot at $10.50 per glass. I frequently just order a couple of appetizers as tapas-style snacks, and find the goat cheese and roasted pears in fillo dough with a divine passion fruit vinaigrette ($9) to be a terrific starter. Recently, during whale watching season, I opted for the seared ahi, which is served over a seaweed salad with a mouth watering sesame ginger dressing ($10). Alas, the whales were spotted earlier in the day, and we didn’t see them, but the Patrons and overnight guests can enjoy their meals on the casual dining patio poolside

overlooking the Pacific.

sunset, the sound of the surf, and the delicious starters made for a grand dining and visual experience.

Executive Chef Reynol cre-ates dishes that will satisfy the choosiest palate while they still, at the same time, interest and do not scare away the budget trav-eler. The Ribye Steak is exqui-sitely grilled to order, topped with crunchy fried onions and served with seasonal vegetables and fingerling potatoes. At $28, it sits at the high end of the menu, but the excellent cut of meat and succulent taste make it most worthwhile. My com-panion opted for the porcini mushroom risotto with baby veggies in herbed butter ($19), and was most satisfied with the subtle flavor.

I could go on and on about the food and the restaurant, but the rooms at the Inn are also

worth a hideaway couple of days. If you ask for the Romance package ($127), you’ll get a sea-side room, discounted dinner, and a special continental break-fast. You and someone special will treasure a beach getaway, and you’ll feel a million miles from home just 15 minutes from downtown Ventura.

If you just want a quick Sunday escape, enjoy the very popular and amazingly reason-able Sunday brunch. I usually choose the cream cheese-stuffed French toast with cinnamon ($9) or splurge on the cioppino (fish stew), made with local fish and richly flavored with garlic and saffron (a real bargain at $14.95).

It is not fancy, nor is it a chain operation, but the Cliff House Inn and Shoals Restaurant is one of the true hideaway gems of Ventura County. F

Owner Sanford Porter ensures that guests will be able to unwind at his inn.
