ICP introduced the new generation interface “DIN Industrial Networking Organized Interface”, the DINOBladeTM interface, in Q3 2005. DINOBladeTM is built with a DINOBladeTM interface, an Intel 915GM chipset and serial I/O blades for flexible, low power consumption, high performance, modular automation, digital surveillance and embedded appliance industrial systems.

DINOBladeTM ArchitectureDINOBladeTM systems are constructed in four parts: the CPU blades, the power blades, the I/O blades and the backplane. The backplane connects the CPU blade, the power blades and the I/O blades together. There are two backplane types, passive backplanes and active backplanes.

Passive backplanes are applied with CPU blade and standard I/O blades functions, and it is also the settings of DIN-3000 series products, and IEI already designs several CPU and I/O modules to match many application regions.

Active backplanes enable the CPU blade interface to expand with more I/O interface specifications and even support a wider variety of I/O function directly. For example, users can develop one backplane as a PCI Express to PCI bridge IC to implement PCI functions or build a RAID or NAS system controller through the powerful PCI Express channel.

DINOBladeTM Interface Introduction

Passive backplanes are applied with CPU blades and standard I/O blade functions. These include:

Active backplanes have active devices embedded on the backplane itself. These embedded devices can include:

If the devices listed above embedded on the backplane enable the backplane to be directly connected to a compatible device. For example, the backplane can be directly connected to I/O devices including HDD and card readers.

DINOBladeTM InterfaceThe DINOBladeTM interface is a complete industrial level interface solution. The DINOBladeTM interface combines PCI Express and USB (USB 2.0) interfaces together. The small form factor ExpressCard is designed to deliver high performance, and flexible modular expansion.

The pin definitions have 4 signal parts, including ATX power inputs, four PCI Express signals, three USB signals and an ExpressCard SM bus signals. All pins are integrated in one PCI Express X8 connector and no further pin-headers or cables are needed in this system for the plug and play blade structure.According to above definitions, the backplane can have four PCI Express and three USB, or three Express Card devices for expansion without any further chipset. Of course, we also can append PCI Express switch or USB hub on the backplane to arrange more add-on cards or devices.

The CPU blade contains full system board structure with PCI Express or USB functions on board. The CPU blade is connected to the backplane via a PCI Express X8 connector including several PCI Express and USB and power signals. Pin definitions are below.

DINOBladeTM interface completely supports the ATX power input

interface. The power interface combines ATX signals, +12V, +5V, 5V

stand by current, and a direct 3.3V stand by current for new generation

chipset usage.

According to test results, the power consumption can be set from 10W to over 200W, and provide customers with system flexibility.

The I/O slot connector is defined as a PCI Express X4 connector. The

PCI Express X4 connector can carry ATX signals, one PCI Express X1

channel, one USB channel, SM bus signals and power inputs. Three

implementations are possible: PCI Express only, USB only and combo

signal as ExpressCard.

The I/O interface supports high speed PCI Express and USB functions with

power input. The I/O interface can be applied in full system modules or

single I/O device design. USB only I/O blades used as single devices like

USB external boxes are also supported.

High IntegrationThe DINOBladeTM interface defines a full system communication bus that is integrated with power supplies, internal system signals and active / passive I/O buses. Whole structures are power adapted for independent usage and have hot pluggable PCI Express and USB support.

The CPU blade interface is constructed with I/O interface separated as PICMG structure, and gives the most convenience to the system integrator’s applications.

High performance PCI Express and USB 2.0 combination.The DINOBladeTM interface combines PCI Express and USB. PCI Express is the bus with the most

potential and is called the Third Generation I/O interface, the 3GIO, after the ISA interface and PCI

interface. The bus speed has a transmission speed in a single direction of 250MB/s or a bi-directional

transmission speed of 500MB/s. The PCI Express bus almost doubles the PCI 133MB/s bus speed. PCI

Express is software compatible with PCI and PCI Express devices and can support more than one lane.

Two, four, eight and sixteen lane PCI Express buses are marked as X2, X4, X8 and X16. PCI Express is

almost the fastest interface in the structure of a modern PC. Even the AGP 8X at 2133MB/s is slower than

the PCI Express X16 at 4GB/s or 8GB/s (bi-directional).

USB is the most popular interface in PC application .Over 100 million devices have been introduced. There

are several kinds of devices defined in the USB standard like mass storage devices –external HDD, DOM,

…-, the human interface device (HID) –keyboard, mouse, …- and many others.

Flexible Interface and Hardware Design.DINOBladeTM interface defines the connectors and pin definitions, but no limitations are placed on external

form factors.

The DIN-3000 series is IEIs implementation of the DINOBladeTM standard in a small chassis. The DIN-

3000 can be applied in many areas. The CPU blade can be changed to a DSB-915 for powerful Pentium-M

performance or HDDs and external eSATA drives can be added while using the DEX-302. DINOBladeTM

interface partners provide many solutions.

Open Pattern for Full Customization.All DINOBladeTM interface definitions have been released by IEI. Partners are always welcome to

cooperate with IEI in developing new products and applications. Our partners can implement their system

or assemble their system with any IEI DIN-3000 series product.

● Single Board ControllerThe DSB-915 is an Intel 915GM mobile chipset based SBC. The

DSB-915 has a preinstalled 800MHz zero cache Celeron-M CPU and

only consumes 15W of the power. The DSB-915 is suitable for system

upgrading and project step evaluation. For example, if a RAID system

is built with a DINOBladeTM CPU interface, a whole suite of products

from low level to high level can be produced by switching the CPU

blades. The DIN-3000 series models also have several common I/O

expanding modules for system integration requirements.

● Expansion I/O systemThe I/O blade is a creative idea. Combined with add-on cards and extension modules, the I/O blade

performs like an add-on card. Users can simply develop functions through the PCI Express channel

or the USB channel by switching the normal extension module. To do this, only two fingers need to

be installed. Additionally, users can package a USB blade into a stand-alone USB extension device.

● Integration embedded system moduleEmbedded systems are very important appliances for DINOBladeTM

interfaces. Embedded system development requires strict I/O function

testing and evaluations. In traditional environments many problems

can arise. These include increasing functions, transferring evaluation

kits and developing the mass production version.

The DINOBladeTM interface is the perfect system structure

for embedded system evaluation. It is fully functional, and

has a replaceable CPU blade, has rich I/O module support

and a wireless power module for a convenient and easy to

use project owner solution.

The DCHS-5S is the first DINOBladeTM interface system application product. The DCHS-5S features a small form factor for DIN mount usage like automation controllers and complete thermal solutions. The DEX-302 is a DINOBladeTM external storage application. The DEX-302 is equipped with one SiliconImage SiI3132 chipset to manage two Serial ATA (SATA) channels, one channel is for on board 2.5” SATA HDD connectivity, and the second channel is for external SATA (eSATA) connectivity. Besides these two SATA ports, DEX-302 also has one external USB connection for the USB device connectivity. DEX-302 supports two SATA II channels with 3Gb/s maximum transfer speed, Native Command Queuing, port multipliers with FIS-based switching, programmable output signal swing strengths for longer external cables or extended backplanes, hot plugging, enclosure management and ATAPI device support.

The DEX-303 is the most popular IEI digital surveillance solution applied with the DINOBladeTM interface. The DEX has a 2-channel video and audio recording system via the high speed USB 2.0 interface and supports MPEG1/2/4 codec hardware encoding to provide real-time VGA video and stereo audio capture for each channel. SDK for DEX-302 offers 2-channel audio-video preview and recording functions. Detailed parameters can be easily adjusted for DVR or streaming software development.
