Dear DHS Family, We are well into the second half of our school year, and we are having another fantastic year at Dillon High School. Students received progress reports on February 26th. Parent conferences will be held on Thursday, March 14th from 4:00 p.m. –7:00 p.m. Hotdogs and hamburgers will be served in the cafeteria courtesy of our Title I program. Parents, please be mindful of any FAs that your student received in any class for the first semester. An FA means that your child has failed that class or classes due to excessive absences and will need to take credit recovery in order to receive a credit for that course. Students should be conferencing with their teachers before getting to the crucial point of having major attendance issues. Remember, students cannot make up more than five absences per guidelines set forth by Dillon District Four and the S.C. Department of Education. Be reminded that the new credit recovery policy states that students must make at least a 50 in the class and receive a recommenda- tion from the teacher of the course that he or she wants to credit recover. Parents, please continue to help us with excessive tardi- ness, id badges, dress code violations, cell phones and earbuds. Students are now receiving suspensions for non- compliance, because numerous warnings have already been given. ID badges are to be worn during the instructional day every day. Our district policy prohibits the use of cell phones and earbuds during the instructional day. All policies regarding attendance, tardiness, dress code violations, id badges and cell phone usage are outlined in the student handbook. Please remember that all rules and policies are implemented for the safety of ALL students and staff. As we continue to progress through our school year, I would like to take the time to remind all students and staff to continue to stay focused on working collabora- tively for the good of every member of the DHS family. Teachers are expected to deliver bell to bell instruction daily, and students are expected to come to school fo- cused on receiving a quality education. Our prayer is that everyone will continue to stay healthy during this cold and flu season. Remember our motto at Dillon High School is Excellence is Es- sential, as we will continue to have high expectations of excellence for our students and staff every day. Mrs. McCallum Talks Biology 2

Mrs. McCallum and her Biology 2 classes have begun discussing Bacteria and Viruses. We will make virus models that we will hang around the room. Each student will pick a specific disease and research details about it. With this project, the students will make a “Wanted” Poster and present it to the class. We will then begin discussing protists and are planning a lab to look at live protists in pond water. After discussing Kingdom Protista, we will discuss fungi and dissect mushrooms! The students get to show their creativity while learn-ing lots of new things!!!

The Building Blocks of Life!!

In Mr. Robinson’s Biology I Class, students have just completed their unit of study on Macromolecules. Objectives for this unit include: summarizing the function of the four macromolecules and explaining how the structures of the macromolecules are related to their caloric values. Students will examine the various factors that affect the rate of biochemical reactions. In this unit, students will conduct a food label lab activity. In the activity, students will analyze the food labels of various items to determine the nutritional value of the food and the energy content based off the macromolecules studied in class. Students will graph their results. In the previous semester, many stu-dents were shocked by the fat content of some of the popular snacks that they have around school. The students’ next unit of study will be on cells. Students will learn about the different types of cells, analyze the parts of the cell theory, explain the function of various organelles and cell structures, and explain the phrase “Life is Cellular”. All units are geared towards helping students be extremely successful on the Biology I EOC in May.

Mr. Clark Prepares Students for the US

History EOC

United States History and Constitution students are now studying Standard 7 which focuses on the impact of World War II on the United States and the nation’s subsequent role in the world. Students are preparing for the South Carolina United States History and Constitution End-of-Course Examination, as well as the ACT test. Students are also studying and practicing various as-pects of responsible citizenship. Being prompt, respecting others, and being responsible for your actions are being emphasized in this unit.

PEC Updates from Mrs. Angie Jackson

Starting with the 2018-2019 freshman class, special education students will have a new graduation option. The state of South Carolina now offers quali-fying students the opportunity to earn a South Carolina High School Cre-dential. This program combines an academic course of study with work-based experiences and is designed to help students with disabilities prepare for transitioning from High School into the work community. We are look-ing forward to implementing this new option, because it will be extremely beneficial to many of our students.

Dillon District Four: no cellphones or other devices during school day According to the Dillon District Four’s Possession/Use of Electronic Communication Devices in School (Policy JICJ) is simple: cellphones or other devices cannot be used or activated during the school day. Other devices may include pagers, walkie-talkies, or other telecommunication devic-es that emit an audible signal, vibrate, or display a message. Students are permitted to use cellphones after regular school hours and during extracurricular activities. The policy also states that the district will make an exception for documented medical reason and when a student aged 18 or older is an active member of a volunteer firefighting organization or volunteer emergency service organization. The district specifically bans the use of camera devices to violate the privacy of a student or staff member. The Student Discipline Code Book lays out punishments that students will be subject to in the case of a violation. Level I-G the student possesses the device and it will be confiscated and submitted to the Office. Level II-B offense is when the student uses the device for photos/videos/audio during the school day. First Time offense is three days out-of-school suspension and a parent conference is required for reinstatement Second Time offense is five days out-of-school suspension and a parent conference is required for reinstatement. Third Time offense is five days out-of-school suspension and pending administrative hearing. Please refer to pages 8 and 10 in the Student Discipline Code Book.
