Progress Report
Introduction
The eighteen sketchbooks, one notebook, and two binders that make up the A Ghost of
Daisies Foundation collection materials are proceeding smoothly as they are converted into an
online digital library. The key decision that has been made is that each book will represent one
object. However, each object will also have attached to it three sample pages. In the future, it is
desirable to digitize all pages for online viewing.
The Collection
A box listing of the books is included below. The records were placed in the folders with
the manuscripts in chronological order and then the sketchbooks are arranged in chronological
order based upon the start date for the first page of each sketchbook.

Metadata Scheme
Dublin Core was decided to be the most efficient, flexible, and scalable metadata scheme
for the A Ghost of Daisies Foundation collection. The library will be using the Dublin Core
Metadata Element Set, Version 1.1 for this project. Since this collection focuses primarily on
artwork and short stories, a more complex vocabulary was deemed inappropriate for a broad
audience as this project was designed for.

Description of work progress
The twenty-one objects in this collection were sorted between being image manuscripts
or text manuscripts. They were then arranged in chronological order. Some challenges arose
when some of the sketchbooks were being created during the same time period. The decision was
made that the book that was started first is listed being chronologically older even if the range of
dates for its’ internal artwork surpassed the range of a sketchbook started during the same timeperiod. Each book was then labeled with a note giving the date range of the artwork inside. For
the notebook of handwritten short stories, three pages were typed by hand to be included with the
original scans.
Next, three pages were selected from each book for scanning. The scanning of the objects
and pages has been completed. After examining the broad range of characters in the images and

stories, it was decide that a simple metadata scheme would be most efficient for this collection.
Scanning was accomplished by using a Canon Canoscan D1250U2F scanner.
Timeline
The next step is to create an online repository using Drupal. This repository will include asearchable database that can sort the objects by date and resource type (image or text). The cover
of each object will be included on the entry along with the three sample pages for each item. For
the nine sample textual pages (three from each manuscript object), they will be OCR by using
Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. These pages will be made available as PDFs that can be
downloaded by users.
The work of setting up this online repository is expected to take the most time and should
be completed by November 19, 2010. After the repository is in place, the uploading of objects
and their sample pages is expected to take only a week. The website will be then inspected and
this project within its’ limited scope will be completed by December 2010.

Provenance
This collection is mostly the works of Amanda Goodman but works created by Jessica Laney
may be within the collection. The collection was created in the following cities: Asheville, N.C.;
Avon, N.C.; Tacoma, W.A.; Greensboro, N.C.; Washington, D.C. The entire collection was kept
by Amanda Goodman in her possession until she donated it to the repository.
Biographical Information
Amanda Goodman was born on April 28, 1985 in Asheville, North Carolina, as the oldest child
of Edward Keith Goodman and Clara Mae Bowling Goodman. Her parents separated in 1991
and later divorced. Goodman attended multiple schools but graduated from T.C. Roberson High
School in Asheville, North Carolina in 2004. In high school (2000-2004), she was actively
involved in the National Honors Society, Junior Classical League (Latin), Poetry Club, and an
Anime Club. She attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville (2004-2008) and
graduated with a B.A. in Multimedia of Arts and Sciences (MMAS). She specialized in video
editing. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2009-2011) for her
master’s in Library and Information Studies where she was a graduate assistant for the
department chair, Dr. Clara Chu. Goodman’s duties included building a new department website
and a personal website for Chu’s project called the International and Comparative Librarianship
Communitas.

Goodman 7
From 2002-2010 Goodman began to collaborate with Jessica Laney on a fictional story. The
story was originally called Neo Project but later became known as Link . This collaboration
spawned 5,636 drawings, which the sketchbooks in this collection are only a portion of the total.
Goodman and Laney also wrote 695 short stories as part of their collaboration.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of eighteen sketchbooks, one notebook that contains short stories, and
two binders with loose-leaf print outs of other short stories. All the objects in this collection are
in paper format. The manuscripts focus on the years 2002-2004 and 2009-2010. For the
drawings, they are not concentrated more heavily in any single year compared to other years.
Records are arranged in chronological order within the sketchbooks. There is some overlap in the
sketchbooks however due to smaller sketchbooks having been carried in Goodman’s purpose
while she also maintained a larger sketchbook at home during the same time period. The order of
the short stories in the binders is undetermined and Goodman stated in her donation that theywere printed out alphabetically but may not have been put into any particular order in the
binders. The records were placed in the folders with the manuscripts in chronological order and
then the sketchbooks are arranged in chronological order based upon the start date for the first
page of each sketchbook.
