BEGRIFFEBei klassischer On-Premise Software (also gekauften Lizenzen) verantwortet der Käufer alles: Von der Hardware, auf der die Software läuft, über die Wartung (also regelmäßige Updates), bis hin zum Betrieb (also zum Beispiel das Sicherstellen der Verfügbarkeit).
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) stellt klassische Rechenleistung oder Speicher zur Verfügung. IaaS geht einen Schritt weiter als das klassische Hosting, indem von der eigentlichen Hardware stärker abstrahiert wird. Der Übergang ist aber fließend. Grob kann jedoch gesagt werden, dass die Verantwortung für die Anschaffung und den Betrieb von Hardware an den Service-Lieferanten abgegeben wird.
Platform as a Service (PaaS) geht einen Schritt weiter. In der Regel baut dieser Service auf einem IaaS auf, stellt jedoch darüber hinaus eine Applikations-Umgebung bereit. Also eine Software-Umgebung, auf deren Basis sich Anwendungsprogramme erstellen lassen. Hier wird auch die Verantwortung für den Betrieb der Software-Plattform an den Service-Lieferanten abgegeben. Hier sind Plattformen wie z.B. Salesforce Commerce Cloud, SAP Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure zu nennen. Sie bieten eine Basis, auf der man konkrete Lösungen bauen kann.
Software as a Service (SaaS) zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass es sich in der Regel um eine fertige Lösung handelt, die man für den jeweiligen Anwendungszweck nur noch konfigurieren muss. Die Verantwortung wird hier komplett an den Service-Dienstleister abgegeben – abgesehen von der Erstellung der Inhalte natürlich.
