Digital Databuses – J1939
• 2007 Spartan Chassis have multiplexed gauges.• The gauges use J1939 as the source for all of the engine and
transmission information speedometer acts as master gauge:– Speedometer– Tachometer– Oil Pressure– Engine coolant temp– Voltmeter– Transmission temp
• The fuel and air pressure gauges are not read from the J1939 databus.
2007 gauge diagnostics
• Diagnostic mode– PB set– Vehicle speed = 0– Ignition on
– Press “M” button for 5 seconds then release– “M” or “T” to scroll up or down– Press both “M” and “T” to enter selected diagnostic section
2007 Gauge Diagnostics
• Instrument diagnostics– Gauge test
• Tests gauge movements
– Lamp test• Tests each indicator lamp
– LCD test• Tests speedometer LCD
– Input Status• Provides status of inputs
2007 gauge diagnostics
• Engine Diagnostics– Screen displays SAE fault numbers
• SPN (suspect parameter number) • FMI (failure mode identifier)
– Press “M” or “T” to scroll up or down– See the attached link for cross reference– Link to Spartan Website for cross reference
2007 Gauge Diagnostics
• Transmission– Speedo displays transmission diagnostics– Transmission doesn’t support it
2007 Gauge Diagnostics
• ABS– Screen displays SAE fault numbers
• SID (subsystem identifier number) • FMI (failure mode identifier)
– Press “M” or “T” to scroll up or down
2007 Gauge Diagnostics• Read Parameters:
– Engine speed– Coolant temp– Avg Fuel economy– Barometer– Speed– Gear– Oil psi– Fuel level– Aux air psi
– Engine hours– Boost psi– Battery volts– Air primary– Air secondary– Trans temp– Dimmer %– Engine load %– Inst Fuel economy– Brake application psi
2007 Gauge Second Line Display
• Second line display – PB set– Vehicle speed = 0– Ignition on
– Press “M” button for less than 5 seconds then release– “M” or “T” to scroll up or down– Press both “M” and “T” to select the highlighted parameter for
second line display.Trip odometer - Instant fuel econ – Avg fuel econ – Hourmeter- Ammeter
2007 Gauge Configuration
• Configuration mode– PB set– Vehicle speed = 0– Battery master on– Ignition off– Press and hold both “M” and “T” – Turn ignition on– Press “M” or “T” to scroll up or down
Self test option – Bootloader Version – Software Version – Engine Type – Trans Type – ABS Type – Trip Odo

Auto Neutral Feature• Transmission shifts to neutral when the PB is set• Tachometer displays “Range Inhibit”• Shifter displays
– left segment flashes the gear you had selected – Right segment “N”
• The transmission is in neutral but does not send out a neutral signal– Starter button doesn’t work– Functions dependant on neutral signal don’t work
• Fast idle, PTO, Etc…
DPF• Diesel Particulate Filter
– Also known as• Aftertreatment device, Catalytic converter
• Critical component for emission compliance
• Collects particulate matter
• Must regenerate periodically – Passive (no action required by operator)– Active (manual switch must be activated)
DPF Switches• DPF override– Disables regen
• DPF– Activates manual Regen
DPF Lamps• DPF
– Diesel Particulate Filter– Indicates Regeneration required
• HEST– High Exhaust
System Temperature
• MIL – Malfunction Indicator Lamp
(DDC Only)
DPF Lamp• Indicates need to regenerate DPF
– Steady on indicates need to perform regeneration
• Least serve level• Drive it hard - or• Stationary with manual switch
DPF Lamp• Indicates need to regenerate DPF
– Flashing indicates need to perform regeneration
• Moderately serve level• Stationary with manual switch• Failure to regen will lead to
potential engine derate
DPF Lamp & Check Engine Lamp • Indicates IMMEDIATE need to regenerate DPF
• High severity level• Stationary with manual switch• Failure to regen will lead to
potential severe engine derate
Stop Engine Lamp• Indicates DPF cannot be regenerated
– DPF is too restricted to be regenerated– Must be serviced by authorized engine service
center.
HEST Lamp• Indicates high exhaust temperatures• Temperatures vary
with engine model• May be speed
interlocked• Can come on during
normal operation• Will come on during
regeneration
MIL Lamp• Malfunction indicator lamp
• Indicates an emissions
related fault
• Detroit Diesel
